I know that 12 oz is not much, but curls are still technically working out.  If you are an overachiever, you could go straight to the 40oz curls...  You would probably need to lower reps a bit though...

Good idea, Andy.

Thursday night between 8pm and 12am EST I intend to do somewhere  between 6 to 10 sets of 12 ounce curls.
Picked up some Select 55 for tomorrow night.  It's pretty good in case you're wondering.
Go 'Bama (I don't like the SEC, but I like Texas less).

OK I really need to check. Are you really working out with 12 oz weights? Dude that's like lighter than a small can of soup. Are you sure you don't mean 12 pound weights

OK....gotta admit this made me laugh out loud.  Were you really being serious?  It sounds like a bad joke out of the McKinsey Brothers Movies.  As a hockey player that "hung em up" several years ago, you are embarrassing us!  Remember, its all about the "BLUE"   you remember La Batt BLUE!   Cool

I'm working on scheduling my races, and boy do I have a bit of a dilemma!
IronGirl Triathlon is already set and ready to roll. :-)

There's several more but I'm not sure how to schedule them because I know recovery and taper is important to training. Forgive me for the blah blah chit chatter of this post.

There's two tri's before IronGirl that has shorter bike, shorter swim, but same 5k run.  One is in March, the other is in April. Should I consider doing 1 in March? I can't do April because of ADA Tour de Cure 64 mi ride.

In the fall (there's really no summer Tri in LV) - There's Las Vegas Triathlon, Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, and Pumpkinman Triathlon (Silverman Triathlon is in November - Half and Full..no way I'm doing that!).

The problem is they changed the months, so all three of these are scheduled close together.  Lake Las Vegas Tri and Las Vegas tri are 1 week apart.  I was thinking of doing the first one Sprint, and the second Olympic. Both are taken place in September, and both have Oly and Sprint distances. (My orginial plan was to do both, since one was going to take place in August, or so I thought!).

Pumpkinman is in October (I don't know why I thought it was in November). This kinda is at the same time as RTC Viva Bike Vegas (charity ride - 35 miles, 64 mi, or 118 mi) - one week apart, I hope!

I'm at loss of what to do...is one week between races/events enough time?
Here's what I'm thinking - and feel free to chime in -

Don't do any Tris before IronGirl - April is 64 miles for ADA Tour De Cure ride

September do one Sprint- The one on Sept 11th. (The other is on Sept 26th).

October do Sprint PumpkinMan Tri -Oct 23rd.
RTC Viva Bike Vegas - Do 118 miles (this is where the training from May-Sept comes in), however, I have NO idea what day - Taken place in October. Last year, the RTC VBV was taken place one week before Pumpkinman.

---OR---

Same as above, but do the Olympic on September 11th instead of Sprint.

Thanks for any advice!! I'm sure if I was top notch all of these can be doable, but I just wanted to be sure that I'm not setting myself for a lot of issues.  RTC ride, I don't have to register until much later in the season, plus I don't even know WHEN it will take place. But the others, I want to take advantage of the Early Birds. Looks like i"m gonna have to be a USAT member!!  Hope I'm kind of making sense.

WOW, there is so much going on in this note my head is spinning......Laughing

I have a couple of ideas for you to think about.

First, I did three events in a month in '09.   I say events because only one was an "A" race and the other two were strictly training events.  In the first, I was learning bike to run pacing and in the second, I worked on nutrition. They were literally training events.  I had strict HR/exertion caps and I stuck to them.  If you want to do multiple events and it won't burn you out you might consider that approach.

Second, do you need to cement the '10 schedule now?  Last year, I had Boston and two tris that were locked in and everything else sort of got added as the season progressed.  I know some big races close, but I was willing to risk it.  I was afraid if I signed up for a ton of stuff it might cause me to get sick of racing.  There is a lot to packing up your stuff, not sleeping the night before , getting to the venue at oh-dark-thirty, etc.....it can be exhausting!  This year I had to approach it a little differently because I need to build to my "A" race, but I was pretty careful in what I selected and am prepared to drop something if I need a break.

Two cents from the peanut gallery.

I would do more than less.  Sounds like not a long tri season in LV so get your races in.  Last year my "A" race was in November and I didn't do too many races leading up to it.  I was so bored, thank goodness for this group because I lived through all their races (who do you think started the "Is anyone racing this weekend" question).  Unless you have a major focus race that you are going to bust azz I would not worry too much about taper and recovery....you'll rest a few days before and take a couple days to recover after each race.

Spring races - Unless one of these are your "A" race I would do them.  I think these will be your first tris - so do them all - focus on different things in each race and you'll learn alot (we all do).

But to echo Suzy, do you need to sign up for the fall races now...are they going to fill up soon?  Maybe see how the spring races go and then go from there.

My two cents...so now you have .04

Rooting for Alabama.  Don't like the SEC but bama did beat the Hokies so gotta root for them...

Suzy, I would say XXS.  Bike size means absolutely nothing.  There is no standard whatsoever.

Here is the link to that belt my instructor had me wear:

http://www.trinowfitness.com/en/Finis-Tech-Toc.html

I don't know if I would want to own it, I think a few sessions with it is enough to reinforce the hip/ab rotation.  I did my drills this morning (at 5am, thank you!) and I was able to replicate it fairly well.  Sadly, my breathing fell apart, but hopefully I will be able to incorporate this with more practice.  Still feels extremely exaggerated to rotate that much, but she says it was looking good.  Agh, my oblique abs are super sore right now.

Welcome, Mark!  Former sprinter here, too!  Just give yourself time to gradually build up the running...less chance of injury and less chance of getting frustrated!  Run/walk is awesome when starting out.  I had to do this 2.5 yrs ago to regain my run fitness and voila, just finished a marathon in December!

DougRob - 2010-01-07 9:44 AM I did my LAT test this AM on the treadmill. I can officially say that this is not a fun workout! Running at near max capacity for 30 minutes stinks! I got it done and have my HR number for the the last 20 minutes, run at a continuous 8 mph. (155 AVG HR). Now we'll work out my training zones from that.

Many of my training sessions are indeed fun. This one wasn't I had to play mental games with myself. When I wanted to stop or slow down I imagined I was at  the end of a race and was trying to sprint to the finish line. You know that adreniline boost you get when you are at that point in a race? We'll I was trying to leverage that feeling to get over the rough patches. It only worked a couple of times. I guess I can't fool myself too many times. Anyway I am glad it is done for now. I am sure I will have to repeat it in a couple of months.

Doug

Yay for you for getting that done!! I HATE those kinds of workouts. I always say (truthfully!) that I'd rather run 10 miles comfortably than push myself for a 5K. (And I have a timed 5K next Thursday -- I'm already getting all worked up over it!) I get a total adrenaline rush before these workouts -- similar to a race -- because I know I have to push myself to places that I don't like to go. I just try not to give in an inch, an ounce, a step, whatever. I crank up my Foo Fighters like crazy and just go. Stopping is such a pleasure.

Congrats on being able to put it behind you for a couple of months!!

No, I do not need to cement the schedule now, but it kinda give me a plan. Some have registration open already, and I'm a bit cheap, and rather put in the money for the fees sooner than later. Although, some have early bird until March.   When I saw that Lake Las Vegas tri and Las Vegas Tri are one week apart, I wasn't sure what to do or if I can do both even if one week apart. I will wait a few months before 100% committing, and then see where I'm at with my training. As far as I know, I think Las Vegas Triathlon, Pumpkinman Tri, and the Silverman Triathlon are the biggest in this area.

Thanks for your 2 cents.

I'm not a Bama fan, but they are an SEC team, and we want to keep the streak alive.....

Anyways, I had a great swim today, busted through my endurance problems by changing my warm up routine, and slowing down my pace.  Today I did 1000 straight in 19:09.  I wasn't even winded at the end.  I am just about at the endo f my recovery week, and can't wait to start my base 1 training next week.

I have a bunch of pages to catch up on...better get started.

Focus on training May-September (5 months! damn), especially in cycling.
September do one Sprint- The one on Sept 11th. (The other is on Sept 26th).
***if possible, do Olympic on Sept 26th)***
October do Sprint PumpkinMan Tri -Oct 23rd.
RTC Viva Bike Vegas - Do 118 miles (this is where the training from May-Sept comes in), however, I have NO idea what day - Taken place in October. Last year, the RTC VBV was taken place one week before Pumpkinman.

---OR---

Same as above, but do the Olympic on September 11th instead of Sprint.
Skip Sept 26th triathlon
Olympic Pumpkinman
Skip RTC Viva Bike Vegas or just do 64 or 35 miles instead.

Suzy

My two cents...so now you have .04

important note here, if i'm reading this right.  you have two weeks, not one,  between those races Sep 11 - Sep 26.  thats a big difference.  you'll be fine.  also you'll be good with pumpkinman then 35 at viva.  race as often as you can!  and remember those rides are supported rides that you can take it real easy on.  yes do that march race because it will be early and we'll all be rooting for you while sitting on our a$$es.

man i had to go back and read that thing like 10 times to make sure i got.  i'm sure i still missed a lot.

edit.. forgot,  talk to jeremy about pumpkinman, he just did it.  good inside info.

Cool

Take off eh ya' hoser. Bob & Doug MacKenzie....My fictional Canadian heroes.

Yeah you're right...two weeks...I think I was thinking "one week recovery", thus one week, but if I do the first one as Sprint (for training purposes) and second one as Olympic, that should be doable. *pondering*

March race - I'm not too sure, although the distance is smaller than Irongirl on the bike, (700m, 11mi, 3.1mi), but still 3.1 run in 2.5 months is freaking me out. LOL!    I've thought about it because this race starts at 3:30pm (Duh, Showdown at Sundown) and has three distances. Plus, it can give me an insight on IronGirl's race as it's in the exact same area. It's something I'm considering...what to do what to do oh boy what to do...:-) Man, this stuff is addictive!!  That way I can rest and really train good/hard from may to Sept without feeling like what the hell am I doing this for.

Mett - 2010-01-07 11:02 AM My name is Mark Nibert and I currently live in Dublin, Ohio. I am 29 years old, married w/ one kid (almost 2). I started training for my first tri-athlon last year and was doing pretty good and felt really motivated until 8/20 when I got hit by a car on my bike. The guy ran through a red light, I had the walk sign etc and needless to say it ended up w/ me in an ambulance. I was pretty luck as the most serious injury was a fractured elbow that is now fully healed. I am back in the gym doing some weight training and I am almost back to where I started.

I am 6'5" and about 275 lbs. I have 50 lbs plus to lose and I am excited to get rid of it. I will admit that sometimes food is hard to pass up but I am getting better. I have been an athlete my whole life and my strong points are sprinting which doesnt help a whole lot here. I have experience with running (played soccer). I have a mountain bike (now trashed) but I am hoping to get a good road bike w/ the settlement from being hit. I really suck at swimming and have tried several of the methods suggested here but I just get really tired really quick. I am hoping to get some advice on the swmming portion of it. I hope to do my first tri-athlon this year.

Thanks again for letting me join up so late!

Welcome!  I am glad you got me email!  You will do well here as long as you deal w/ a few canadians, and smart arses!
