Originally posted by StaceyK POL post Sorry I haven't been around, life just kind of got busy. I haven't been doing much training just to odd trail run here and there with some EPIC hills in them - yes Chris I mean epic in the true sense of the word. The last of the winter series runs is in about a week and a half and it has the worst of the hills. Other than that it is a bit over 6 weeks until my next road HM and a bit over 12 weeks until the marathon that I have planned for the second half of the year. Time to get serious about training. We have added 3 new members to "team turtle" recently. One is a girl from my work that has started doing the trail runs with us and the other two are friend of E's, so the Manatee influence continues to spread. This means that we have gone from the 4 of us that did Dopey to now being 7 and a half. I say half because baby turtle has decided that she doesn't like to run in winter cause its too cold and wet. She's 10 so we are letting her be a princess for now.

We need to get them on here! I'm sure that Chris can come up with some kind of induction ceremony!

you could treat this just as a good training day and try for training paces for each discipline.  Sometimes i think a flat bike course is worse than one with a few hills as you get no reprieve - you must pedal at all times. So, if you out bike your bike fitness thinking the course is easy, you will feel it  on the run!  Of course, depending on how much you are willing to suffer, instead of doing training paces, you can push it and just try to hang on during the run.

So, my great advice is to either treat the whole race as a long training day or go all out and see if you can hang on until you blow up. your welcome

I second this advice

Yup. I'd set some kind of Super Secret Goal for the bike and run. And don't overbike!

This is exactly my problem (or opportunity) next week. Well, add way less training and the fear of meeting two awesome  and intimidating Manatees.

Good call. I'll need all aspiring Manatees to stand in a room while I decide their future based on having met them for 10 minutes during an overproduced reality show...

Never mind, that won't work. I actually care about new manatees.

So here's to you my Southern friends, you are incredible!

This is my first summer training in Atlanta - the humidity is real. I have been on treadmills for a lot of my mid-week runs for that reason. And I've had to start bringing a sweat towel on my long runs outdoors. I easily lose 3 pounds of sweat in a long run, even with drinking a crap ton of water. It's definitely a challenge!

It is yucky for sure! But, you do acclimate to it.  Before yesterday's run I thought it felt kind of nice out, checked the weather and it was 78* with only 90% humidity. The run before was 100% humidity, so 90 was a big break! It's a sickness .

I moved back here 19 years ago. I'm still not used to it.  I'll ride a bike anytime, heat and humidity don't matter. I hate running at this time of year, or at least what I remember of running (it's been a while).

Ann-Marie is not human.

I have lived in it my whole life. I agree, Ann-Marie is not human

Third-ing or fourth-ing (maybe even fifth-ing?) the motion that humidity is dreadful and that Ann-Marie is an anomaly.

How are you faring with all of the storms and flooding in your area? It sounds like your basement has not appreciated the deluge, is that right :-(

Haha, I never said I liked humidity! But, living where I do you have no choice but to get accustomed to it or else you won't run at least 6 months a year. Right Chris ?

It finally stopped raining today!  I saw the sun!

My basement still has rivulets of water seeping in from the walls which is an improvement from rivulets visibly and audibly gurgling/flowing through the walls yesterday.  Keep your fingers crossed the sump pump keeps doing its job!  I didn't go to work yesterday because there was only one viable way out of my town, all other routes had flooded/closed roads plus Hershey, where I work, was especially hard hit with flooding, closures and evacuations and I wasn't sure what I'd encounter on my drive.  Thankfully this morning my town's roads have opened back up since the creeks went down but many roads in the area are still flooded over and some have fallen away/collapsed with all the water movement.  Bridges have washed out.  Hersheypark was closed two or three days because of flooding.

It's been crazy for sure.  Stranded motorists, evacuations, closed roads and therefore horrible traffic, and sadly a few lost people washed away.

Thanks!  My basement is almost dry.  Now that the creeks are starting to go down, the extent of the damage to roads is becoming evident.  EFP drove down a road we bike on very frequently and he said at least a good 50 feet of it has washed away (the asphalt) so they filled it in with stone for now.  Oh, and he said it there was enough wood (trees/logs) backed up against the stone bridge that a person could build a log cabin from the debris, it's a huge log pile.  A biking friend was on another road we ride fairly often and sent pictures - it will be a while until that gets fixed and reopened, too.  I imagine that is the case on a lot of the roads we frequent.  There are so many creeks and rivers around our area which is good but bad in times like this.  Here are pics she took on her ride this morning.  Road is closed to cars but obviously she trekked in with her bike to investigate the damage.

They are forecasting severe thunderstorms and more rain tonight, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all heck doesn't break loose again.

Melanie, they are still repairing roads from the floods here last month. One main toad has been closed since then. The lake in front of our house is 2 feet shallower that it was before the flood.
You stay safe and I hope the storms miss you for a while.

Full disclosure: I have met very few in person.  But although there are many I-words that I would use for many of the Manatees (such as Inspiring, Impressive, Impertinent, Improper, Ingenious, Imaginative, Intelligent, Interesting, for at least one Indonesian and for myself at least Imperfect)  Intimidating is not one of them.  Each and all of us are just people with different strengths, but no one is better, worse, above or below.  I say don't ever be intimidated by anyone, anywhere.  You are just as [Insert I-word here] as anyone else.

None of us should intimidate you!

I really like how you put this, Kirsten.  Many of your 'I-words' suit - ingenious, imaginative, impressive.
