Havin'Fun - 2010-01-07 2:51 PM Sorry to put tris aside...anyone watching the game tonight?

Who ya picking?

Uhm, who's playing?

Texas and Alabama

I better go with Texas!  I wouldn't want John and Andy to crucify me when I see them.

Not sure they are Texas fans....

putting saban up there with bear is tough.  but texas.. man i'm not really sure that i care as long as its a good game.  clearly the two best conferences in college football are represented

UGH!!! You know that Linda and I will disagree with you on that!  Pac 10 all the way, BABY!!! (just not this year )

John, you know those are fighting words.  Were you laughing the whole time you typed that?
I have to admit I did like the Bear...I actually trained one summer at Alabama.  You are right...Saban is no Bear!

Kim is a wise person...Pac 10 all the way...we just took a little rebuilding time this year

There's football during the week. I thought the Cowboys and Eagles weren't until Saturday???HA

I'm not going to Italisize this or put it in red. I want Linda to wonder if I am that clueless about college football.

If its the national championship, shouldn't USC be playing? I thought they were supposed to be good. this deserves the red treatment though.

actually you're right.  it's been a while since the ol' ball coach went.   its just tough for USC when there are so many high caliber teams in the SEC.  its not like they are in the sun belt or big 10 or mid-american or pac-10.

Yea, SC had a tough year.   But if you talk about the best look who ABC has breaking down the game in the pregame show.....none other than Pete Carroll.
SC is that good, and they will be back!  I'll wager a few drinks on that one  Smile

tahrens - 2010-01-06 11:41 AM I know I am a little late on some of my comments, but  I've been off line for a few days so everyone bare with me....

George - I like the idea of learning new strokes. Overall it improves your form  and comfort in the water and makes you a better swimmer. Plus swimming improves core strength so why not diversify the muscles used.

SUZY  IS  RUNNING!!!!

Trina - way to go on the 1300yd swim.. Keep working your breathing drills.  If you have to stop that frequently it sounds like more of a breathing issue than an endurance issue.  Just ask Kim. Make sure you are breathing out completly before you turn your head.  Also evaluate how often you breath, every other stroke, every 3rd, every 4th?  Maybe that will help.   And as for what to wear for the first race, I advise going with tri shorts and a top - not a tri suit.  Get a good pair of shorts and then ride in them a few times.  I quickly learned a proper pair of tri shorts should NOT be painful to ride in.  If the saddle hurts - the shorts are bad.  If you are going to rent a wetsuit I highly recommend this site  f2r.com   (Fit 2 Race).  I rented all my suits from them. It is $45 for a full or sleeveless but you get the suit for 29 days!!  They have outstanding customer service and lots of good sales on their used suits.  The first time I rented from them the suit was brand new!!!  The 29 days is super nice in that it allows time to exchange if the fit isn't right and to get lots of practice in it.  They are also renting race wheels!!!

Michelle - I think all stroller runs should count as 2x the distance!!! Way to go girl.

Jenny - so what did you think of Claire?  I am doing some of the same exercises as you.

Dino - skip the workout and rest.

Just got back from a short jaunt to Reno (played some blackjack and ate at a few buffets!) and cannot fathom going through 10+ pages, are there any cliff notes that someone can provide?

Trina,

Tracy is referring to the fact that it took me almost 3 years of swimming to figure out from my new swim coach Allison (5 weeks ago) that I was not breathing all of the air out, thus not enough air was getting in...that would cause me to start sinking sooner, drop my non breathing arm and basically swim very inefficiently!  wow, that was a mouthful.  I am really good at breathing now as I do an extra forced exhale at the moment my mouth is about to break the surface of the water and my leading (non breathing) arm is just gliding ahead, hanging out, waiting patiently for me to take that stroke!  I just had that as a breakthrough these past 2 weeks practicing and focusing on my breathing.  I used to be already done stroking with my non-breathing arm as I looked down from the breath.  Sadly, I did not realize this was a HUGE waste of energy...it allows for zero glide and that is why I was kicking like a crazy person.  I am actually able to do the EVF (early vertical foream) now, and I am getting the kick to coincide with the breath.

*if only i could do this breathing on both sides!* suzy, that's for you! we are waiting for me to improve my rotation before we start the left (my poor) side breathing   Speaking of rotation, last night at my lesson, she gave me a Finis belt to wear that has a little barrel that rests on the small of your back.  As you swim, you listen to it "Click" each time you rotate to either side.  The goal is to have it click equally and then hopefully more forcefully as you pay attention to it.  I felt like I really had to exaggerate the non breathing side to get it to click much at all.  By the end of the lesson, I was really getting it.  We took the belt off, I swam a few lengths and omg, I was literally moving like a little fish through the water. really cool.  Can't wait to practice this new drill (unfortunately without belt) but I think I am starting to get it!

Hope everyone is doing well, I will be once I get that CT USB cable from Racermate

Ohhhhhhh...a new toy I haven't heard of.  The Finis belt sounds very cool and VERY useful.  Officially called the Finish Tech Toc, I now want one. Had to laugh when I looked them up.  They are $50 bucks.  For those of you looking at all the Tri toys and budgets..$50 is the minimum for ANY tri toys.  It never fails.  Might be able to justify it since hubby is now learning to swim too.     Will first call my contact at the Natatorium to see if the university has one I can play with first.   One can hope.

Suzy, your bike is going to be SCHWEET!!!!  I hope it is everything you want it to be.    Glad your friend is doing better too.

Hope everyone is staying warm this weekend.  Well, back to work.

I'm not exactly having to stop that often, I'm just following the swim plan from swimplan.com that calls for a short stop every so often. I'm only a month into my training (from scratch), so I'm feeling pretty good about where I'm at swimming-wise. But definitely thanks for the advice on breathing exercises. I make it a point to exhale completely under water, so when I turn my head for a breath my lungs are empty and ready for a fillin' Sometimes catch myself with a bit of air left in my lungs, but not very often because I am very aware of my breathing. At this point I'd have to say it's an endurance issue. I could be wrong, though. Who knows?

Now I want a Finis belt.

well I guess I answered a personal question I had about how hard I train.  I keep thinking that I tend to give up before putting my body in any stress.  Tonights workout on the trainer.

15 minutes ez
4 x 30 second accelerations
5:00 all out TT (go as hard as possible)
10 minute recovery
2 x 1:00 all out TT
5:00 recovery (I threw up in my mouth a bit during the recovery, nice huh?)
3 x 20 second sprint (tremendous calf cramp when I stood up to sprint started yelling for Sam because I couldn't move, afraid I was going to fall over, she had to come help me get off the bike.)

Never finished the first 20 second sprint or final recovery.  Typing this my legs are trembling.

Best 20 seconds: 484 watts (never got to do a real 20 sec trial)
Best 60 seconds: 450 watts
5:00 TT: 283 watts (lame...)

I need to go through my file and see if there are any issues in that 5:00 TT, I am pretty sure I never got below 300 watts.  My PT sometimes seems to drop for a few seconds.

So last night I was in Atlanta and Steve (Reno8) and I met for an adult beverage and some dinner.   Talked about a little BT...some of your ears were probably burning a little.  Yes, you know who you are  Will definitely take him up on the offer to cook next trip to the ATL.

On a good note, I went to The Big Peach Running Co. yesterday.  (Everything in Ga has something to do with a peach being that it is the peach state.)  The sales guy put me on an electronic measuring device which measured my arches.  Arches were middle of the scale, and I always thought they were flat.

He then video taped my stride and mechanics in slow motion.  He said I had a neutral foot strike, where other shoe stores had put me in the pronator category.  He said that my feet turn out a little, and may look like they pronate with the naked eye, but upon analysis in slo mo, he determined that I should be in a neutral shoe.  This may have been a contributor to my ITB injury.

Ran 4 miles today (before my 2100 swim) with no pain, so I am going to ease into a little more running and hope for the best.

I love seeing numbers/data but am sooooo not a technical person ~ not a good combo, I know!  Needless to say, following is probably a question that I should already know the answer to.  However, I've been wanting something for my bike that tells me a bit more than just distance (my garmin tells me that) but (as much as I hate to admit) I am clueless.  Again, I have a garmin 305 so I'm not worried about something that will tell me HR.  I've been asking around and have found everything from $40-$thousands.  What is the dealio with this?  What is the difference between a powertap and a Cyclocomputer/cadence sensor besides $1500???

A cyclocomputer/cadence sensor has a magnet that mounts on a wheel and a computer to tell you how many times your wheel is spinning per minute.  This can be setup to give you bike speed, distance etc.

A cadence sensor like offered for the Garmin, can do both speed/cadence.  Cadence is how fast you are turning your legs, so there is a magnet that attached on the crank arm near the pedal and every time it passes the sensor (on the rear chain stay) it updates your cadence (good for knowing if you are better at spinning very fast revolutions in an easier gear aerobic capacity or mashing the pedals in a very hard gear anaerobic)  If you have the Garmin 305 already, the cadence sensor would be a good investment if you are a data person.

Basically you want to compare your effort (HR) and how it relates.  For instance my workout last night:
Warm up etc
4x 10 minute sets (75-80, 80-85, 85-90, 90-95 % Threshold Power

Forget the Power section and just note that each set the power was supposed to go up.  Since I was on a trainer, you can do that one of two ways, faster cadence or a bigger gear.  I started off the first set running right about 90 RPM, the second set, I bumped up to the high 90s to get that speed in the same gear.  3rd set went up a gear back down to just below 90, and finally spinning my legs faster for the last set.  I do not have my data in front of me, but after some analysis of some similar rides, I could see what cadence keeps my HR lower and eventually what keeps my legs best for the run.

I used to spin on my old bike at 100-105 RPM, I have lowered it to be in the 90s now, and even get some enjoyment out of mid to low 80s.  I still have to keep running the numbers, and hopefully the PT will help me determine what is my ideal cadence.

All that said, Powertap or training with a power meter... This measures the power you output.  Power is a combination of your gearing and your cadence.  It gives a number that is supposed to help you train more effectively by keeping your power in a certain range(so you put out the same amount of watts climbing a huge slow hill or on the flats)  This helps keep you from over exerting when you know your limits.  If you are a data person.  I highly recommend Training and Racing with a Power Meter by Allen/Coggan as a good read.  I started to read it before I had a PT, but could transfer some of the information to my Kurt Kinetic Road Machine since they give the power to generate a certain speed.

You can get even more expensive, a $3600 disc wheel with PT   You can also find them used for much less as well.  I forget the webpage off hand, but they used to sell a wired PT setup laced into a rim for about 600.

I know that 12 oz is not much, but curls are still technically working out.  If you are an overachiever, you could go straight to the 40oz curls...  You would probably need to lower reps a bit though...

Good idea, Andy.

Thursday night between 8pm and 12am EST I intend to do somewhere  between 6 to 10 sets of 12 ounce curls.
Picked up some Select 55 for tomorrow night.  It's pretty good in case you're wondering.
Go 'Bama (I don't like the SEC, but I like Texas less).

OK I really need to check. Are you really working out with 12 oz weights? Dude that's like lighter than a small can of soup. Are you sure you don't mean 12 pound weights

OK....gotta admit this made me laugh out loud.  Were you really being serious?  It sounds like a bad joke out of the McKinsey Brothers Movies.  As a hockey player that "hung em up" several years ago, you are embarrassing us!  Remember, its all about the "BLUE"   you remember La Batt BLUE!   Cool

Welll I have to admit if was a brain fart, alzheimer, old age  moment and I should never jump into a conversation without looking back to see the context.   I must have been overworked and my brain was on idle.   Ohhh and I never drink Blue except when it is opened for me by someone else .

Mett - 2010-01-07 4:03 PM I would love to find a swim coach, I just cant afford a whole lot at the moment. I will make a post in the Ohio forums and see what I can find.

You might be able to just get a few lessons from the local swimming pool etc. the expense is significantly less and it might make a world of diference to your stuyle. I know it helped me a coupl of years ago. I did 2 lessons per week for 6 weeks, I think< and it cost me only about 100.00

60 sec W/kg = 5.99
5 min W/kg = 3.78

Somehow I dropped 4 watts on my 5 minute TT from last time, not sure how that happened.  Doing these kinds of tests are hard to get nailed down, you don' want to go too hard too soon, obviously for a 20 second and almost a 60 second you can but even in a 5 minute you have to pace yourself, I pushed hard from the get go, then let off a bit then hard for the last 2 minutes.

Had a good ride last night on the stationary bike at the gym. Too bad they haven't brought back a good quality bike. the one I am riding on right now must be old than Frankenstein and I can't even tell how fast or how far I have gone. Just have to guesstimate based on my past experience.

I think I'm am having the post holiday stress disorder.   Stress from having to go to work a whole 5 days this week.   All I want to do is sleep in and curl up in front of a fire with a good book.  Alas, that's not happening.

Today I have a longish trainer ride because for once it's actually COLD (don't laugh...the high is 36 today).  Soooo, I'm taking movie suggestions for what I need to pick up at Block Buster to get me through.  I saw Chick Flicks last weekend.  Action is probably a good choice to keep me peddling.  Let me know what you've seen that's worth your time.

Happy Friday!

Congrats!  you fit in perfectly with this MG.  this is my 3rd or 4th time in this mg and I think I'm one of the few "old timers" that don't have 1000 posts.

OK, so what would the MG do?Smile  I'm supposed to run a 5k tomorrow morning - it's the 3rd race in the Frostbite Series that I've been running with my daughter (she's not going to run this one).  The temp will be somewhere between 0-5*F at race start time.  Winds are supposed to have calmed down by then so hopefully the WC won't be too bad.  This is the first winter since I started running that I've been trying to run outside and not do all my runs on the TM, so I'm not used to running in these kind of cold temps.  I have enough winter running stuff to keep me warm during the run - it's the mental side that I'm having trouble with.  Just the idea of running in those temps is freaking me out.  Part of me says 'suck it up - once you get going you'll be fine' and the other part says 'you're nuts to even consider it'.  So which part do I listen to?  Just curious as to what you guys would do.
