Exhausted – great w.e in Placid.  Training and 46ers galore.  Not sure if I saw any of you in LP at the weekend.  Even if we knew what we looked like, it would have been hard to make each other out through all the rain and fog.  Dream Chaser – I did see you.  You had one more tooth before that photo – did you fall and knock it out?

Happy with the training although I wonder if I hammered the bike too hard on Sunday (6hr) given that I only had to run 4 miles (I got the downhill run brick in – PLEASE TRY IT – ITS WEIRD – and you`ll have to do it race day).

All – I concur that the bike course at LP is easier than Rev 3.  I though as much after riding rev 3 but wanted to go back and triple confirm.  I dropped to the small ring just after Willmington on the second loop – that is the bit I find the hardest (and most beautiful), not the Bears!  I totally agree with 'cumulative effect' of the second loop.  The climb out of LP pre decent toKeeneis also underrated.

They need to fix some of the potholes on the decent toKeene.   Someone is going to wipe out!!!!

The LP run is easier than rev 3.  But the LP run is not easy!!!

Friday – swim pre race? I`m in (after i`ve signed up for 2012)…..

I've got one big week this week, then two weeks just short of 12 hours, then race week. I kicked this week up a bit by adding a mid week 4 (3/1) hour brick to help offset the longer sessions I missed while injured. I did get approval from my coach, as long as I "take it easy".

I have a rest week this week (racing an Olympic on Saturday) and then a three week taper that goes 18 - 12 - 6 (yes, 18 is a taper week, seeing I was at 23-24 for this last block).

I wouldn't think so... I've heard some real interesting responses to this one though. From "normal" things like a 5-hour energy to a burrito. I'm probably just going to put a snickers or payday and some other random stuff I can't get on course in my bags. Maybe a spare tube in the bike bag or an extra pair of socks in the run bag.

socks in all bags, and NOT a burrito that might be the last thing id ever think of to put in a special needs bag for an endurance event!! haha!!

they need to have a "finish bag" for all of my beer and delish food that ill want to shove into my face when i finish.

Logistically speaking:

Are the SN bags at the halfway mark of the bike and run?
How quickly can you expect to get your bag?
On the bike, do you have to stop?

Yes - usually about halfway. If I remember correctly they were around mile 55.5 on the bike and 12-13 on the run when I did it in 2008.

10-15 seconds in 2008 for each

You have to stop on the bike and run.

Special needs for me:
Bike - spare tubluar, pit stop (I carry a small pump or else CO2), nutrition, maybe arm warmers or a rain jacket depending on temp
Run - socks, nutrition, maybe a long sleeve shirt depending on temp

Heard that it can not be relied upon - has anyone ever NOT receivede the special needs bag?  As it my first IM, how does it work during the race?

I was going to say my taper officially begins Thursday July 14th, so only a week-and-a-half for me. But compared to the hours the rest of you are putting in, it actually appears my taper began somewhere back in November 2010....Cry

Someone that did LP last year will be able to answer this better than I can. But when I did Louisville if you wanted your special needs there would be someone standing by the side of the road (a couple hundred yards ahead of the special needs station) with a two-way radio. You would yell your race number and they would relay that up to the volunteers at special needs. As you ride by special needs a volunteer would have your bag ready to hand it to you when you rode by. This is how it worked for me on the bike anyway, I barely had to slow down to have my bag handed to me. I didn't use special needs on the run.

Heard that it can not be relied upon - has anyone ever NOT received the special needs bag?  As it my first IM, how does it work during the race?

This is a great question!  For example, I'm racing on Infinit.  I'm trying the KISS method for the bike - 3 bottles premixed, swap at SN with 3 bottles premixed.  Easy peasy.  For the run I'm going to concentrate 2 fuelbelt bottles and swap at SN.  The Powerbar gels don't sit great with me but I can tolerate if necessary.

In any case, the glaring hole in my nutrition strategy is that I don't get my SN bag.  I'm trying to plan for that by a "live off the course" strategy (in case I lose a bottle, etc...).

So how many of you vets here have ever NOT received your special needs bag during the race?  I've heard lots of people not getting them afterwards, but am curious as to the chances of needing to go to plan B.

6 years and I have always gotten my SN bag. Kiss of death typing that out though. Have a plan B in mind, but you will get your bag. Just keep in mind that whatever you put in your bag is going to sit potentially on the side of the road in the sun until after the swim and half the bike. Things that might have tasted good at 6 a.m. when you drop your bags off might not taste so go later in the day. Just something to consider.

This thing works awesome, however it is expensive.  http://www.thestick.com/   A wooden dough roller may do the trick, or I've heard of people filling a soda bottle with water, freezing it, and then rolling on it.

You can also use a lacrosse ball.  Put the ball on a tile or hardwood floor and then lay on your belly, and roll the ball into the sore spot.  Yes it hurts.  A lot.  Embrace the pain.

I racing on Infinit as well, I raced with it during IMCdA and didn't have any trouble. I have the same strategy that you plan on using, it work well fo me in the past. I have not done Lake Placid before, but friends have, and they had no trouble getting their SN Bag with their bottles of Infinit, but it is always possible... joe

Thanks DC! Someone had the stick at a training weekend - which I thought was silly - mainly because they were using it while leaning upside down against a wall - but now I want one! I tried to foam roll it out today and I am going to try the other things you suggested!
