John is doing great!!!!

And my daughter is amazing!!!!!!! She rocked her first 5K, coming in around 32:23. Awesome! She was the first girl to finish from her school (out of 3rd to 5th graders -- she's in 3rd grade).  I harped and harped on her to hold back early on and she was perfect. She flew up the first hill like crazy, the felt it a bit at the top. We took 2-3 short walk breaks, but ran up all of the hills. This girl oozes love and affection and she was saying the nicest things out there -- I made it a point to remember them but now I can't. Doesn't matter, the message was always the same (how lucky she is to have me, how even Seattle is smaller than her love for me, etc.). Around 2.7 miles we were at 28:00 and she said, "I really want to finish by 30 minutes!" I told her that wasn't happening. At 2.9 miles I told her, "Now is the time to leave it all out here. If you have anything in you, let it all out." ZOOOM! She was off and I was not staying with her, ha!! She raced it all the way in to the finish and was just spent at the end. GOOD GIRL!!

I am the super-duper proud mama today!!!

Back to the previously-scheduled Slim-stalking...

That's a very touching race report! I've got kids around the same age and it made me a bit teary just reading it! I must be getting soft in my old/middle age...Cry

Thanks Kyka, Was just heading out and it was good to get a real update before leaving..  I'm a little confused at John's bike times. It says the last split was 8:21:22 but his over all bike time was 6:49:52.. I t looks like the 2nd bike split was a combined overall swim t1 and bike total.

GO BIG JOHN GO.

I took a short (15-20 minute) test ride on a new Trek 1.1 today as I am ready to commit to buying a bike.  Since I have not ridden in more years than I care to remember, it was really awkward at first.  But I did finally get the hang of it after a few minutes.  I spent quite a while talking with the salesman both before and after riding, but honestly I don't think I know enough yet to even ask all the right questions.

I still have concerns with how uncomfortable the seat and handlebars were.  After only a few minutes, the area right under my thumbs was sore on both hands.  Is this normal and something I just need to get used to?  Will a proper fit fix it?  Aero bars?  I have the same type questions about the seat, regarding proper fit, a different model being more comfortable, and/or biking shorts.  Finally, any thoughts as to this bike vs. the entry level Giant which I can get for the same price (though that bike shop doesn't seem to offer as much support with fitting) or any other ideas I might should consider?

A lot of bike price is going to come down to components.  Ask them what components come on the bike, that is a good way to compare the 2 brands and price.

As for the thumbs, that might just be some time to acclimate yourslef to riding the bike. lol you need the callouses to build up on your hands and butt.  As for saddle those are personal preferences, I would stick with the stock saddle for a bit see how it is then look into Adamo or Cobb saddles.

If you haven't ridden in years I would hold off on clip on aero bars.  Get use to handling the bike for awhile then look at the aero bars, they're going to make the bike ride much more sketch than when you are in the drops.

Feel free to post the bikes and models you are looking into and we can do some analysis, obviously you want one that fits but if you find a couple that do, you want to make sure you get the most bike for the money.

Finally, bike fitting is a shady business I think, there are lots of folks that say they know what they are doing but most of them sadly don't know.  Ask if they are FIST, Serotta, Specialized fit certified, that doesn't mean they are great but at least they went to the class and should know what they are doing.

Keep movin forward, John, you're doing great! Less than 10 miles to go! Go, John, Go!

I really can't even imagine running in those temps... my 10 miler yesterday was in the low 70's and I wanted to just go jump in a lake and forget about running.
