TJ I would say yes to protein, some hard boiled eggs may not be a bad thing to add to the mix.  That is just over a 4MPH pace if you were moving the whole time, so I think you could probably handle some more substantial food especially in smaller quantities spread across the time.

Make sure to get enough water as well! Best of luck, what a great cause!

tjtryon - 2010-04-09 9:01 AM Thank you, I've never ran that far before. Any idea on "fueling" for that distance? I'll have my own "tent" area that I go by each loop of the course. I have a 10 gallon jug of Gu Brew, a couple of big boxes of gels, and I am going to get a couple of bags of bagles from the local Dunkin Donuts (I'm in love with their Cheddar Bagle Twists), some 2 litres of flat coke, and some cans of chicken soup. I'll also have some uncrustables (PB&J) and some candy bars/energy bars. Do I need/want protien during that distance? 50 miles in 12 hours is barely a run, but I imagine it will still suck mentally.

Yeah I would just think you want stuff in your system that isn't going to slosh around for that long.

You might want to check out the ultra forum.  Those guys do all sorts of crazy races where you run for 12/24 hrs.  I have read some race reports where they list out what they have at their aid station.

Suzy if I am doing a swim as well when you power on the unit, you can hit the mode button ( I think) and it stops the sat reception.  Do this before starting your workout, I have not seen this happen yet.  You will have to let me know if you see any issues withthe 310 showing 0 power, especially if you are running it at the same time as the Joule (or did you also get the little yellow computer?)

SSMinnow - 2010-04-08 5:14 PM Hey Ryan--do you have an experience with the Garmin 310XT?  Tried to use it swimming today and turned off the GPS since I was inside...when I got home no data, no lap data, no nothing when I tried to upload it.  Anyone else?
Sorry, no experience with the 310... I have the 305 and like it a lot, but I do covet the 310. For us short people, the 305 looks like I strapped a mini-fridge to my wrist, but it works well. Was there no data in the watch itself (can you review the data on the watch like you can with the 305?) or just nothing in an uploaded file on the computer? Sorry I can't be of more help!

That is the weird thing.  I could see the total elapsed time, but there were no laps saved in the unit and it said I had no history.  Read through the manual and there is nothing there either.  The only thing I can figure is when I turned off the satellites because I was inside, it somehow screwed up the unit.  I normally wouldn't time my swims, but yesterday was one of those crazy MAX effort record all your times days...I fear I will be doing it again. Ugh!

Did you get it to work?

RedKnight - do you plan on racing either Guelph or Belwood this year?  I'm planning on the Sprints for both.  I did the Guelph Olympic last year (got crushed), but it falls on my wife's birthday this year.

yeah this is more of a peer response group vs mentor just answering all questions.  So we all pretty much chime in which tends to up the post count quickly sometimes, especially if there are a lot of questions going around.

I think thats one of the cool things about this group, we have folks that are fast, slow and everything in between at each discipline so you can get a few perspectives on pretty much every question.

I'm having a bit of a idiotic-on-my-part-perhaps Garmin 305 issue. Perhaps people can help?

I don't transfer my workouts from my Garmin to the Garmin Training Center every time, just once a week or after two weeks. However, more than half of the time, the cool GPS map doesn't show up.  I guess they have a limit on how many days the GPS Map can be on the Garmin?

Second thing is...how the hell can I be SURE that I'm not in Multisport mode? I'm sick of not seeing my run and only to discover that it has been mixed in with the Bike and put in Multisport. It annoys me. I have tried to "Reset Lap" every time, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. Am I missing something?

Is there a way I can break up the multisport workout, and put it in the proper folders?

Lastly - I also use SportTracks, but I sort of stopped using that because I'm getting different numbers compared to Garmin Training Center. Sometime it's off by a little or a lot in terms of splits, and speed. I think I'm going to go bonkers if I over analyze my workouts by using two different things. I do like SportTracks better though.  However, they will only read the last 5 workouts on my Garmin, so I'm kind of SOL if I don't transfer my workouts everyday.

Thanks for any help...

short drive up from Port A!  it'd be awesome if you show up and hoist a few.  and thanks for all the excitement YOU generated today.  ;-

Grrr...now I'm tempted. DH told me he and the boys are fishing Sunday morning.  I'll have to map quest it now to see just how far it is.   Is everyone splitting right after the race on Sunday?

Tony and I are in Texas til Tues.  I think most of the group is staying at least Sun. night b/c we are planning a big meal Sun. night.  And I hope it involves good mexican food and margaritas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Skunk Cabbage run??

The run goes past a field of Skunk Cabbage.  Link tells more than you could ever want to know.  I did the 10k last year and it didn't go by the skunk cabbage.  I am doing the half this weekend which does go by the field so will be interesting to see if the stuff really stinks.  That willl be my excuse if I don't make my time!

Where I grew up, there was skunk cabbage in the woods behind my house.  I only remember it smelling when you broke the leaves...can't remember how many times we threw broken leaves at each other!!!

From what i remember on the 305, every time you complete a workout, you need to hit 'reset' to save your workout to the history. IF you do not, and you switch sport from run to bike, the system will assume you are continuing on with the same workout.

I think there is, actually seems to be a time limit in garmin training center, I have noticed that myself but haven't researched why it does this.

Second thing is...how the hell can I be SURE that I'm not in Multisport mode? I'm sick of not seeing my run and only to discover that it has been mixed in with the Bike and put in Multisport. If you hit Reset button between workouts you should not be in multisport mode.  To double check before your next workout, hit mode, if you see a little triangle on the bottom of the screen you are in multisport mode, if you see a bike or runner you are in single sport mode.

Is there a way I can break up the multisport workout, and put it in the proper folders?

You can probably go into the file itself if you download it to split it up but you have to weed through the XML to do so.  John might have a better idea on this

Not sure, never used sporttracks, John might have thoughts on the differences, he is the resident geographer type person
