Seattle | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors v.2 thr.3 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes considered) Originally posted by rrrunner Originally posted by Asalzwed Did anyone watch the TCS NYC Marathon Sunday? Daaaaaang I would not want to be running in that wind! What a race. So dramatic. First effin Jeptoo is flying into NYC not to race but to snatch up her $500,000 marathon majors award then they find she tests positive for a banned substance. The rookie, Sara Moreira led a ton of the race and in that wind, I wonder what she could have done if she let the others share more of the load. Desi gets 5th. Goucher ended in tears. Running mile 24 at a 7:29, finishing in 14th place. Kastor goes slower than she wanted but snags 11th place. My teammate got 21st place. She was going for the trials qual (didn't quite get it.) I'm not sure why she was attempting this in NYC which is a notoriously tough course with exactly one sh*t-ton of people running it. Then it comes down to a very close Kenyan on Kenyan battle. It is always so crazy to see people head to head and you are thinking, "c'mon, just go faster! You are RIGHT there" but anyone who has been in that position knows that sometimes faster is just not possible. You are already red lined. On the men's side Meb gets 5th and there were three Americans in the top 10. USA! USA! USA! Also a great quote came out of it, "No matter how fast you are, no one is immune to nipple chafing."
It was quite a race! I was so happy for Kara while she held on to the front, and cried when she cried at the end. I must admit I was projecting guilt by association on to Jemima and happy when she didn't win. That's probably not good. Both men's and women's were down to the wire and interesting to watch. Those conditions were insane! Is it just me or was Deena Kastor pretty hokey in her post race interview. She sounded like the mayor or something. Interestingly, though, DS2 and I were talking about doing NY instead of Boston. Harder to qualify but they have a lottery program so who knows. Takes the pressure of my first marathon though I think NY would be fun to run. But probably just for fun. The idea of all those people really overwhelms me. I think there were something like 50K+ finishers this year. Holy schmokes! I love the idea of seeing the 5 boroughs like that though. And it's just so...NY. I love Deena. I must not have seen the interview you are talking about. She has been running for as many years as I have been alive . Yeah, I think Jemima winning would not have looked great, didn't she have some trouble a while back anyway? Ick. I hate cheaters. I hate that they taint the rest of the sport. You just never know. |

I would love to see NY that way. They say the crowds are amazing. That would be awesome. Nicer weather would be good though... |

Watched a bit here and there. We had one of TW's old Girl Scout troop members in it. And a kid brother of another one of her scouts. And they aren't kids anymore. Really cool to see folks you know doing that. ETA: What was up with Jeptoo? I thought I saw a test come back positive, but I am really not tuned in, so it just kind of flew past me. Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors v.2 thr.3 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes considered) Originally posted by Asalzwed Alright, I signed up for my first ultra. Well, it's not really ultra by the definition of being "anything over 26.2" because it's only 25K but it's an unsupported trail run up some big mountains. And I had to go through ultrasignup to register so it sort of counts.
I'm in a weird spot with my running right now. Obviously I have had some strange setbacks this year...which has been keeping me from a nice clean line of progress. I know that can't really last forever anyway, but it has been a challenge. I find myself more and more desiring to just run free out in the woods up big mountains. And it kind of scares me, or at least it has me feeling conflicted. As if I am abandoning my original goals. I'm not quire sure how to sort it out. OR what I should do. I'm definitely going to run CIM in Sacramento Dec. 7. I probably need to set aside any lofty time goals and just run conservatively. But I think I will show up in good enough shape to at least finish the thing. After that I am not sure. I might just do some fun trail-type stuff and then maybe build for another marathon in the spring. Not sure yet. I guess I don't really know if I have a specific question. I'm just rambling. Maybe feeling a little lost. Catching up.... Sometimes I think that 'feeling lost' is a precursor to finding the next amazing thing. For me it is often that something has shifted, and I am getting ready to accept whatever the world is about to send my way. It's an uneasy feeling, but exciting at the same time. |

It may sound niave, but it really is the only "truth" you have. I hate to bring it up, but LA is a case in point. It was "he said, she said" until proven as fact. I didn't have a horse in that race, so my concern level was pretty minimal. You may have a bigger concern level in your case above. If so, I'd believe the facts until proven otherwise. |

Yep - we didn't leave our friends' place in Dallas to start the drive home until we saw both the top men and women finish - and WHAT A FINISH! It was a really great race to watch, a bit of a heartbreak for Goucher, and I was really hoping that Meb was going to be able to turn it on and come through with a win. FYI - nipple chafing isn't fun, especially when you don't know it's happening until you get in the shower. YEEE-OUCH!!! |

Yes, very exciting race! My favorite part was when it was down to the final two in the men's race, and Desisa was trying to catch/pass Kipsang. It looked like Desisa hit thim once on the upper leg/hip area, Kipsang gives him a look, then another look, then just takes off. I, too, cried during Kara's interview, especially when her little boy kissed her on the cheek; he was so worried about why his mama was crying! Watching the elites is SUCH a thing of beauty and amazement to me. Incredible. And yeah, I needed to not look at the TV while the bloody shirt (from nip chafing) was visible (shudder) that just goes through me! |

Good call, DH. Next time.... |
