What does everyone have going on this week?  It seems that our New Texans are on the move (or at least on on BT!), Yanti is having her third honeymoon, Jo is back in the pool and on the run, Stacey is on the run, Hands is on the mend, Tejas is riding fast, TJ is liking her coached training, Darren is celebraring Wales Long Course Weekend/Anniversary/Birthday.  What else is happening?

Me, I'm just riding far and watching the Tour.

I hope everyone has a great week!

This is a recovery week for me, 1st real one I've done since I started training so it feels a little weird.  Typical 2x run, 2x swim, 3x bike, just shorter times/distances.  I'm running with a friend on Friday, and doing an OWS on Sat.  Might or might not try the rec center's swim conditioning class again on Tuesday - it's good but fairly hard for me.  May go support DH on his 18-mile gravel trail ride this weekend in case he flats or something.  He's training for a 50-mile gravel ride on August 20 and needs to get his tail in gear!!  Also glued to the TV for 2 hrs of TdF a night.  Can't get enough of that!!  Big developments today - I won't spoil it for anybody...

Oh, and *loving* my new-to-me OCR2, "Red."  Did the ride leg for my August race yesterday.  My time was at least 5 min. better than the last time I did it and I didn't need to stop to gasp for breath at the top of the hills.  Could be the engine is stronger, but a lighter bike with different geometry definitely helps!

I am watching the tour as well, but I am a couple of days behind. We have been busy as all heck in life, so training has taken a back seat which is bad in that I am racing this weekend. So, I am hedging my expectations. Unfortunately, this is the first race that will include a friend of mine and I am hopeful that I will have bragging rights when it is all said and done.

Yes, I am trying to be on the mend while still getting some work outs in so I don't put on 1000lbs!    I am also scratching Sunday's race from my calendar, not necessarily b/c of my shoulder bursitis, but b/c it seems I've been sort of un-invited to my childhood home (just for that weekend)!

Jo, glad you are getting back into training!  Ann Marie, sorry about your weekend, but it doesn't sound like you are too broken up over it

My race went very well.  RR will be up in the next day or so I hope.  Strong current on one leg of the swim, a squirrel almost lost it's life on the bike, and there were voices in my head on the run .  Hope everyone's week is starting out well!

Awesome Janyne, it seems like a fantastic time of year to ride far. Plus watching the tour just gets you fired up about it

I've got Ragnar this weekend in addition to just ramping up training slow n' steady. Marathon training starts in August so I want to be ready!

On a hilarious note, as I am sure you all know, pot is legal here in WA state and it has been HILARIOUS how many older upper-middle class-ish retired folks I see walking their dogs down along the creek trail I run on smokin a little pot.

I rode 155 miles to the beach with some friends last Friday.  Five of us started, one person was picked up at the 100 mile mark and the remaining four of us continued on to USS North Carolina.  I guess technically it's downtown Wilmington.  Anyway, we spent the night and came back home in cars on Saturday :-)  I was able to get a nice swim in while we were there as well.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about long course weekend!

I'm just plodding along in the dark, and cold, and rain (thank The Lord for treadmills and indoor trainers). I am so over winter, I want some sunlight back. You guys want to share?

It's 45 days till my race and I'm starting to think that I won't be ready to do run/walk for 12k but I'm not giving up. I might be slow but damn it I will do it!

My goodness, life is crazy.

FIRST OFF: THANK YOU. I am quiet (and things don't post easily on my phone), however I still show up and I read and I smile and I silently celebrate your victories alongside you. You guys are awesome, and it makes this fun.

I am officially 25, 366 days. (hehehe)
A few months ago I was at a stop light and was rear ended by a bus. I was doing physical therapy, AND it has since gotten worse so I've needed to scale back mostly with my running.

But I'm still trudging along. I have been dealing with the whole concept of loosing someone close to me. My great Aunt had cancer they thought was in remission, but it's actually spread all over her body. They gave her a couple months.

The only thing I have ever lost was my cat. That was sucky enough. Needless to say this exercising has been very cathartic.

I'm doing a 50km bike "race" on Sunday. I went into a local bike store the other day and they showed me how to use my gears, so hopefully that will be helpful.
I'm also spending a lot of time in the water and strength training. (I'm looking less and less like a flopping fish AND I made eye contact and said good morning to someone in the pool the other day -- it was a cute boy -hehehe...I'm very shy so this is a big deal).

I also bought the triathletes training bible. Most of the stuff in there goes WAY over my head but it's prey

I've come across a few interesting things, though.

1) Ladies - I am busty (38DD). I found a GREAT sports bra that does the job. But I tried putting it on right after a swim. It was impossible. Literally. Do you have any suggestions for a supportive AND easy to put on sports bra? Otherwise I'm going to be in transition for 20 minutes.
2) Is supplemental nutrition required for a Sprint Distance triathlon? I remember when I was running, runs over 1 hr required gels or sports drinks. Thoughts on this? Given my individual event times, I'm looking at about 2hrs to complete this -- I may finish dead last.
3) Whats the conversion between pool swimming and open water swimming? I.e. how many laps should I be able to swim in the pool to swim 750m in open water?

Good to see you back and sorry for your loss.

1. As a big busty man, I tend to use plasters over the nips until plasters come off with sweat. I then sport the "nips rubbed red raw by tech shirt until they resemble jelly tots" look. I realise this doesn't help, just putting it out there.

2. I've always got by with out anything for sprint distance. A good breakfast and plenty of hydration prior to the race is probably more important. You could have a sports drink on the ride which may trick your body into thinking it has more energy. If I were to have any, I'd take a gel at the start of the bike, which would hopefully(psychologically) kick in for the run.

3. Generally, pool to open gives faster times. This depends greatly on whether your allowed wet suits, currents etc. but I find the most difficult part of transitioning from pool to open is not being able to tell if you're going in a straight line. Also, you get used to ( or I did at least) holding on to the side of the pool at each lap. It can be very strange when you start open water swimming and there is nothing to grab hold of. Try setting yourself a target number of lengths where you don't grab the side for more than is necessary to turn.
As for number of lengths, how many can you do now in one go? Try breaking it up with reps, like 10 x 100m with 10 second rests, or 5 x 200 with 20 sec rest. As you get closer to your race try extending the distance of each rep until you get close to, or over, your race distance.

Just my 2 cents worth. Someone with more experience may be along soon to debunk all of the above. HTH. Darren.

Hi Emily, great to see you. Sorry that life has been a bit tough lately. Glad that the exercise is helping to relieve the stress a bit. With regards to your questions:

1. I am a similar size to you (32F), glad that you have found a good bra I would love to know what brand. But don't try to put it on in transition just wear it under your suit or tri top for the swim. This is normal practice, it's much less noticeable if you have a tri top, but I have seen many women wear them under a normal suit. The reality is that you don't have many other options for races shorter than a HIM because there isn't usually change rooms and "public nudity" isn't allowed.

2. For nutrition I normally just have a drink on the bike, I use diluted lemon cordial as I don't like sports drinks and for me it is mainly to get the taste of the salt water out of my mouth. I think the last sprint I did took me about 1:45ish so I am not fast at all.

3. The number of lengths depends on the length of the pool you are swimming in, but I think that if you can comfortably do 800-1,000m in the pool then you should be fine in the open water if it isn't too rough.

Happy Birthday for yesterday

I learned in this race that in order to finish the swim, you have to know where you are going. And in order to know where you are going, you have to learn to sight.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
