Jeepguy2358 - 2010-01-10 8:28 AM Hey everyone!  I hope everyone had a great week.  As most people go back to work, I get my time off (wonderful life of a golf pro).  A couple weeks ago, I found Setup Events was adding this new tri that was about ten minutes from my house and got really excited, but now, a little nervous after reading an email they sent with a description.  Check this out:

Paris Mountain Triathlon - April 17, 2010 - Greenville, SC
The Paris Mountain Triathlon will be unlike any other triathlon event in the country.  The name of the game at this event is pain!  Sure, the swim is only 500 meters in the wet suit legal waters of Lake Placid within the Paris Mountain State Park, but that is the only thing that will be easy about this event.  The 20 mile bike course will feature the famous Paris Moutain climb of 2.2 miles (elevation gain of about 1000 feet in those 2.2 miles) and of course the screaming descent down the other side.  Awards will be given for the fastest climber (Male and Female).  But don't worry, it gets harder from there.  Upon returning to the State Park you will be greeted by a nice 2.5 mile climb to the top of the mountain yet again.  This time you will do it on foot.  Of course you get to relax on the return trip to the finish line as you descend yet again.  Due to the extreme nature of this event Novices are not encouraged nor are they allowed.  Only the strong will survive the beast that is the Paris Mountain Triathlon.

Ummm, anyone got a extra road bike, say in a 56??  Yikes!

I read a couple posts a few pages back about bike fitting.  If I posted a vid, would you guys be willing to critique my setup?  I'm curious as to how I look.  When I got my bike last spring, the guys at the LBS offered to properly fit me after I rode it for a couple weeks to make sure I like it, but I got to busy and never went back.  Luckily, I've developed a pretty good relationship with them and they offered to fit me at any time since I got my bike from them.

see tony's post above yours.   the race looks like fun!

Looks like you texas people or Texas Tech people got you a new coach last night.  Went over last night to hoist a few with Tubervilles ex-assistants that have been flipping burgers and cooking barbecue over the last year waiting for Tubs to land a job.  They are hoping to follow.

Any of you guys Texas Tech fans?

Mett - 2010-01-09 12:55 PM Anyone have any suggestions for a road bike? I am a clydesdale and probably will be forever. I just want to make sure that I get a bike that I dont pop the tires on. I have around a 1k dollar budget. It will be in the spring when I get it so I am trying to plan ahead. I am also 6'5" so I need a larger framed bike.

This has probably been asked and answered but I am finally back from the land of the chest cold......Amen!

Here is my $.02 for your first bike.  Go shop some LBS stores and get some professional opinions on size.  Don't buy anything.  Then check out craigslist or ebay for your first bike.  Use the stores that helped you to buy your other stuff you are going to need (want to patronize thier business) but you will get the twice the bike used for your first ride.  Make sure you get it tuned up (see local bike store note above) and replace the rubber.  Then when you hit season 3 and decide this is really the "life choice" for you...drop the big money on a machine that you really want!  (see Suzy....SSMinnow)

I rode an older steel model Waterford for a couple of years and still have it....just cannot seem to part with that beautiful machine and I still use it when I ride with a group.  I knew it was going to be my engine was holding me back...not the bike!

Spent 6 years in Lubbock back in the 90's.  I am still working on getting the true story on the Leach deal since I live in WI now.  Lots of different opinions down there...Leach was thier all time winnest coach and the word is that this James kid is really a spoiled little piece of $%^#@#!  I don't know him but thats what I hear.  Hey what other University could put up with Bobby Knight and Leach?

I think Tuberville will be a good fit as long as he wins....hey it is Texas Football after all and Lubbock in only about 90 miles and in the same conference as the teams the "Friday Night Lights" season is based on.  High School football games in town reguallary draw 10,000's of fans.

Hey Ryan--thanks for the advice on the tension.  I do have a question.  My coach told me to cold calibrate and make sure it was 3.0-3.5. then ride for 10 mins to get the final calbration.  When I do that, my final is way over 2.0, like I said last night more like 2.85-3.01.  Should I skip trying to get the cold to 3.0?

The good news is my semi melted tire held up during my ride today....now I need to find a 650 trainer tire in town!

After I get my new fit on Wednesday I'll post one also.  Long before I knew our coach was a coach I had been told he was one of the best fitters in the DC area, so looking forward to it.  And just for Trevor i'll wear my tri-suit in the video.

Really all you need is for the tire not to slip.  Tighten it up a bit, then hold the flywheel and try to move the tire.

If you have a hard time moving it then you are tight enough.  After a short warmup it should be somewhere between 2 and 3.   TBH at your weight I think it wouldn't take even that much tension for you not to be able to slip the wheel.

Thanks Tony.  I always thought I had to crank the crap out of it to make sure I had appropriate pressure.

Sounds like you got a really good deal in your coach.  Glad to see it is working out.  You will be a force to be reckoned with at Lonestar!

Man, I just haven't had a chance to play on the computer these last few days as much as I'd like and unfortunately it is only going to get worse since my class starts up tomorrow ~ ugh!  However, I stopped by to read up real quick and wanted to post this as I thought it deserved to be posted in more than just my blog...

Too funny!

Now, as funny as this sounds (even to me) after posting something like this, I'm off to Church!

Hey guys.  Well, I sucked it up and went to my race yesterday morning.  Temp was somewhere around 0*F but at least the winds were fairly calm.  I have to say though, the morning did not start off well.  I got up later than I had intended which means we left the house late, then had to stop for gas which made us even later.  Long story short - I missed the start of the raceFrown.  I figured I couldn't be that far behind and still needed to get my run in, so I took off along the race route.  Unfortunately I started off too fast trying to catch up and by the 1 mile mark I had to slow down considerably.  Good thing was, by this time I had caught up to the back of the pack.  I tried to even out my pace as much as possible for the last 2 miles and even managed to pass some people.  My official time was 40:15 but I think it was probably closer to 36:00 that I actually ran.  I seemed to be dressed pretty well, the only thing on me that got chilled was my cheeks from time to time.  I had a scarf off to pull up when needed but it wouldn't stay put.  The rest of me was actually a little too warm.  Even with the issues, it was fun and I'm glad I went.Smile

2.6 miles completed for my leg of the Tahrens honorary not-Disney relay marathon.....  Thanks Tracy - believe it or not, I had to push myself to finish this with no walk breaks on my journey back to running!

On another fine note today - my daughter completed her first 50yd swim...  She is hard at work already for her kids' triathlon in May!  I am very proud of her, she could barely swim at the end of the summer.  We have been working at this for a couple of weeks now and it was great to see her push herself in the pool to get to the other end.  Form still leaves a lot to be desired, but then again, so does mine.

Andy ~ that is so cool that you and your daughter are doing this together - I love hearing this kind of stuff.  I would love it if my Sammi decided one day to follow in my footsteps...she already wears my shoes to "run"  (See my avatar!) and says "momma" every time she sees someone running or on a bike!

There is definitely some float to the calibration. What I've always done is to ignore the calibration for 8-10 minutes during your warmup. Spin the heck out of the thing and don't worry about the number since you're just trying to warm up the mechanism and you're not worried about watts. Then do the spin-down test and calibrate as close to 2.0 as you can; I try to stay within 2.0 to 2.2. If you repeat the test after your workout, you'll probably find the calibration has drifted anyway, but hopefully it should be minimal.

The problem that I could see with calibrating to 3.0+ is that you're really deforming the tire and causing excessive energy loss (e.g. hysteresis) by pushing that roller waayyy into the rubber. I can see how that would drastically increase the wear on the tire, hence your melting tires.

And, now that I've typed all that up, I see that Tony has a perfectly valid answer for you already. No need to crank it down, just enough so it doesn't slip. Done and done.

I did not do a run today, but figured I would do my part for the marathon as well so my long bike ride came out to be 26 miles and change on the trainer.  I tweaked my seat a bit before the ride, and I made it the full time without any pressure in my shoulders/traps.  My buns on the other hand were a tad tired when finished.  The Adamo is getting more and more comfortable, hopefully by the end of the month I will be good to go with it for good.  With this trainer ride, I broke 500 miles on my P2, close to what I put on my Trek that I used for training in the spring through the season!

Hey everyone.  Still alive but "life" has just kicked my a$$ over the last week and I still have some things to finish before I can get back in the regular swing of things.  Been checking in and keeping up on your guys and posting in my training blog....that is my method of journaling and having it connected with me workout logs helps hold me accountable.

Did my 11 miler today with my training partners and they are training for their first marathon.  It was about 25* with a wind chill of 18*.  Got it done and felt pretty good.  This Monday the weather is supposed to start getting back into the normal ranges of high 40's to mid-50's during the day....let's hope so.

Hope everyone is doing well and as soon as I get some things worked out I will be jumping back in the fray.

Ran a new "longest" run this morning, 14.91 miles in 2:15. The last hour s*cked! My inner thigh muscles started to cramp afterwards. I am not even sure what the muscles are called. I drank during the run so I was not dehydrated. I hope this gets easier, otherwise the marathon is going to be torture. 10 weeks to go.
