dcon - 2012-02-18 3:46 PM A friend of mine asked me to do an HM that happens to be one week before an Oly I am planning to do in June.  Does anyone in the MG have this experience?   Too much?

My experience is both races will suffer.  You will hold back on one and not be fresh for the other.  If it is a matter of just having some fun then I say go for it.  I tend to recover pretty quickly from a half.  My .02 cents.

I agree it depends on your goals for the races. FWIW, last season I ran a 15k race the week after running a half marathon. The half marathon was my A race, and the 15k was just for fun. I definitely felt the fatigue from the half during the 15k. I wouldn't run a half the week before an important race, but if they're both just for fun, have fun!

Linda - great story, you're an inspiration! I read your COJ story and I have to say I would have shouted something ending in OFF right in her face, you're reaction was far better; she was a stupid idiot, but remember what goes around comes around, karma catches up with people...

I'm not gonna race tomorrow, I think a long ride and longish run would do more good at the moment, good luck to anyone else who's racing.

I've got 2 bits of good news, 1. My MIL has gone home after staying with us for the past 3 weeks....2. I've bought a new bike!!!! I took it out for a ride this evening and it's GREAT!

Uhm, did you forget something?  PICTURE PLEASE!

X2....I want to know what comes after the Bianchi.

My new Scott Foil 40, I couldn't afford Ultegra so its got 105, the frame size is 54cm compared to the 57cm Bianchi and the bike fit was much more thorough than last time; it seems to fit me much better.

It's particularly fast if you go up into a bigger gear and give it a bit of a squirt, it just seems to take off!

The main differences between this and the Bianchi are its stiffness, quick transfer of effort into speed, light weight, very confident and precise cornering and comfort.

My next purchase will be tri bars, when I went down on the drops today the speed went up 2-3km's/hr with the same effort and HR so I think tri bars would go great?!

Texas: DONE! Crazy day out there with pouring rain, thunder and lightning. Even took shelter in a car for about 20 minutes while a particularly bad patch of ground striking lightning came through, but I survived, finished, and all in all it was a fun day! More details to come in the RR, which I'll try to get done soon. Here's a pic Gary took at the finish. It had stopped raining by then, but you can see some of the aftermath. They had to pull a bunch of cars out that had sunk in the wet sand too.

Nice Ride David!!!Awesome job Roni!!!! For those that raced lone star a few years back, the turnaround at Roni's race today was the bridge we rode over around mile 25 of the bike at San Luis Pass.

Thanks for the insight.  Now I know exactly where she was.  Glad we only had some wind to contend with (and a little heat).

David, I love the bike.

Roni, crazy marathon girl, NICE JOB getting 'er done.  Now answer my FB question!

Thanks, you amazing group of peeps!

Suzy- I did! In case you missed it, here's my response: After visiting with the kids/grandkid next week, my sole focus will be REV3 70.3 Portland for the next 4 months. I'm sure in the Fall there will be more marathons on the schedule... I'll have to see what's on the calendar in WI. Would love to finally meet you in person!

Julia- The sand was actually pretty good, hard packed in all but a couple short sections and the occasional sink hole from the rain. My joints actually feel really good today. My muscles on the other hand are saying WTF?!? That isn't the sands fault though. That's the lack of training. Fun race though. I would highly recommend it.

So amazed by you, but I don't know why I should be amazed anymore! You keep knocking these crazy states off the list. Great job out there in that crazy weather. I'm smiling right now thinking of you getting some nice person's car all wet and sandy while the lightning passed. Smart and tough! Enjoy seeing the fam!

DougRob - 2012-02-18 3:16 PM Weather was awesome today. Met up with a couple of friends from FSseries in Butner, NC and rode 3.5+ hours. One of the guys is doing IM Louisville. Being me, I of course forgot my biking shoes. 55.15 miles in running shoes! But I feel good post ride!

Nice ride!  No shoes again?  Too funny... how many times have you done this now?  Oh well, if nothing else, you're well trained for that contingency... :-)

NICE!! Money mouth  Congrats on the new ride!

So, if the MIL would have stayed another week, would that have gotten/earned you the Ultegra?........ Just joking!
Although, if I had to spend 3 weeks with my MIL this would be a fair trade off.

ITS MARDI GRAS!!!! Nowhere near the size of new orleans, but this isn't such a bad thing.  So you should find lots of trouble to get into down around The Strand.  I think the big parades rolled last night but I'm sure there will be tons going on today.   Looks like Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade is rolling on the Seawall at one... its a cool pet parade.

The Texas Seaport Museum is cool.  The Elissa is there.  Awesome tall ship on The National Register of Historic Places.  I was part of the crew that sailed her off anchor for the first time in close to 100 years..

Queens BBQ is awesome, if its still there.

Sadly, a lot has changed since Hurrican Ike.  But with Mardi Gras, you and Gary are sure to have fun!!! Send pics of what you did for beads!!!!!!

Way to go Roni, you are making your way across the US, so proud of you!!! That is a long way in the sand. When I lived for a summer in Wildwood NJ, I ran every day on the beach. I thought my calves were screaming some times.

You are amazing!

Roni, That beach marathon sounds like an awesome time.  The rain, thunder, and lightening might have made you occasionally forget about the whole running in sand thing--probably not!  LOL  Way to get it done.

David,  That's on pretty ride.  I'm sure the two of you will enjoy many wonderful rides.

Doug, maybe you need to put notes on your bike, and your helmet and your vehicle:  "Don't forget your bike shoes!"

I'm still training for my first 1/2 mary (end of March).  It seems like it will never get here.  I started adding some really hilly trails to my runs and started to have some "bad" pain on the medial side of my right shin.  I don't know if I'm describing the location correctly, but you get the idea.  Bad hurt=back off the miles and the hills.  Backed off this week, iced, stretched, massaged.  Today, I did a short 3-mi. test run and felt good.  I don't have to work tomorrow, so I would like to go for a long run (10 mi or so).  What do you all think.  Too much?  Play it by ear and if I start feeling pain, shut it down?

I'll tip my glass of wine to the best mentor group ever!!  You all rock!!

In an effort to "HELP" you, I have included a list of all the Wisconsin Marathons.  I have done many of them and would be happy to drive to the one you select.  I am partial to Journey's (Hilly),  Whistlestop (lumberjack trail) Green Bay (run through Lambeau) and Fox Cities (a lot of cement), but have also tried my hand at the Lakefront and the Madison marathon with minimal success .  There is even a new marathon in MINOCQUA on the trail I run on all the time......you don't have to commit now, but like an elephant I won't forget to remind you once REV is over.
