Can't run.

After 4 months of ITB issues, that's fixed and this (remove expletive) achilles is an issue - and it came out of nowhere.  If I'm barefoot then I have no issues, as soon as I put on shoes I have pain.  Hacked out part of the back of an older pair of shoes after reading some suggestions online - made it just over a km and half this morning before giving up.

Trying to find a local podiatrist or chiroprod.  Friggin depressed at the moment. [/rant(whine)]

Sorry to hear that, injuries suck.  I have a really hard time dealing with them mentally

One of the things I do is try to keep it all in perspective. You may be injured now, but you weren't before and you will not be in the future.  Training and tri's are going to be there in the future and you will be able to participate in future events.

Sometimes this is easier said than done, unfortunately. I feel for you.

Thanks guys.  The mental part may actually be tougher than the physical part.

Rode the trainer last night, but as soon as I put on my bike shoes my achilles hurt - luckily (and happily) I can loosen the strap right off and ride without any real discomfort.

What Chris said is really important, it will heal and you'll be back at it.  Oddly enough, every time I've had an injury, and I've had lots, it always feels like the end of training, what if it never goes away, etc etc.... And it always does.

Had the biggest weekend I've had in a looooong time.  Did an Oceanside simulation ride, 30 flat miles folllowed by 50 or so in the hills, with 4 sustained climbs.  Legs were toasty on Sat afternoon

Sunday got up and ran 10, 3 flat and 7 hilly, at a pace I've never held a 10 mile run for, much less a bumpy one.  Quick rest and food, and swam 3400 in the afternoon.   Felt good to get a big weekend in.

Next weekend going to the Central Calif. coast for the long weekend, so no riding or swimming, a little running only.

Sorry to hear neil.

Thanks for tube discuss remembered I needa change out on sons bike. tubes are originals from 2007! yikes.

a while back u asked about my skeechers. I don't think I answered you. There are three different models. I love mine...I tried on a less minimalist skeecher  running shoe and it felt like half a tennis ball was built into the arch of the shoe. too weird.

Chris

wow you must reveal your secret ...you are really on a roll!

Finally found a race I want to do a run -bike-run but its kina cold here still. Rob u there? support me on this one. I have a hard time warming up properly when temp was 80 for three days and dropped to fifty now. The race is in san Antonio about 2 hours from me......and I wonder about potholes on the bike leg. I may twist my sons arm to race it by proxy for me. Then enter it next year when  I know the lay of the land.

You really need to see a good PT. I have been struggling with Achilles problems for almost 2 years and with the right exercises I manage through it.

Heel drops do wonders for me. Running frequency as well. Heat does a lot of good. But we all have different. Find the right PT.

Hey all.  Another drive-by from me.  Thanks to those who've checked in.  We've had a 'spot of bother', as the Brits say and unfortunately (with no offense intended to Chris) it has come to involve lawyers.  Looks like things are going to go the right way (for the kids) though.  I've been training, but no time for logging and posting!

The trail run went pretty well. It was muddy, so I was slower than I hoped, but I finished and it was awesome. The race report is up if anyone is interested.

I had a really tough workout on the trainer this morning, my legs are feeling it bigtime - especially with the 4 flights of stairs at work!

We had more snow over night and now it is raining a bit which means my run at lunch is bound to be a sloppy mess.  I'm ready for winter to be over!

Enough whining from me, I hope everyone has a good day.

Sometimes swimming is just frustrating and there is not much that can be done about it. At least not in that session.

I've been thinking about getting some sort of timer for the non-masters swims. Might help a bit with this. Found a few things, but curious if anyone else has done this. Not getting a watch, they drive me nuts in the swim. I'm also not getting two watches for symmetry.

Quick question, so I can decide which route to go.  Why did you choose a PT over say a chiroprod or podiatrist since it's the achilles?  I know everything is connected, but I'm wondering why go one route vs the other.

Injuries....sigh, I can empathize, Neil!  Hope you're able to get it figured out and on the mend soon.

I had a follow-up appointment with my surgeon yesterday (my PT happened to be there as well) -- none of us is pleased with the result.  At this point, we're going to try another round of anti-inflammatories and see if that improves anything.  But after that, we're going to start looking at my hip.  My surgeon said that it's not entirely uncommon for there to be an issue with the hip that presents itself as knee pain....and since my MRI was clean and my knee looked surprisingly good when he was in there, it's gotta be something else.

If we still can't find anything, I'll have a tough decision to make....which will require either giving up running or including "pain management" as part of my plan.  Hopefully it's in the hip!

Anyone ever deal with swimmer's shoulder?  I'm having some pain in my right shoulder (which I actually think is an old gymnastics injury that I've been able to manage for the past 10+ years by avoiding things that bother it).  I asked my Master's coach to look at my stroke last night and he said it looks like it always did, so I'm not doing anything new....but I'm going to ask again on Thursday night for him to see if there's something I'm doing that could aggravate my shoulder.

Anyways, it's during the pull phase of the stroke that it bothers me (recovery phase is fine).  I'm wondering if ART (or general chiropractic care) might be able to help with the pain....but obviously something needs to change to prevent it from coming back.  Any thoughts?

I'm sorry that the swim and run are painful for you just now. I'm pretty surprised at how much you have done post surgery, there is no way my surgeon or PT would have allowed me to ride with that intensity (ToS) after my knee surgery. Is it possible that you just need some healing time? Even though they didn't see anything in your knee, they still did some surgery and even the most minor of surgery throws things off.... just my 2 cents....my good friend hurt herself last year and all she could do was swim..she threw herself into the swim and ended up with shoulder tendinitis and then a sore elbow as a result of that...not trying to be negative here but sometimes we just need a reminder to take a step back and take it easy for a bit. It's amazing how the body can heal if we give it a chance.

Take care!

I got my stitches out of my foot yesterday....they are happy with the healing even though I had burst 3 of the stitches at some point. I was in the pool again yesterday and today...I have forgotten how to swim...tried a short run this morning but the wound site is still very tender and I worry that i am adjusting my stride/form, so I won't run too much until it feels normal. I have a brand new pair of Nike Free that I am dying to try out but they have a seam right on my wound I'm wearing a pair of old stretched out Asics most of the time but I'm sure it's not good to run in them much.

Best news is that pathology shows we got all the tissue and margins, so all clear there!

In other news...I skipped my ride this am because there was frost all over the place..very rare for here!

Good news on the margins.  We are covered in snow here in Payson.  Yesterday is the most snow we have gotten at any one time.  Pretty sure it will not stick around long though

Whether a podiatrist, chiro, surgeon.....they all know enough to treat the achilles if properly diagnosed. I just went to the guy I had references on. My achilles problems were definitely related to entire leg stiffness

My surgeon told me I had no restrictions and to let pain dictate....he suggested getting back onto the bike as soon as I felt comfortable with it.  Cycling doesn't bother my knee at all, but my legs are definitely still fatigued from the ToS, so I'm taking an easy week this week.

As for the shoulder issue, I definitely think it's somewhat related to my knee issue in that since I can't run, I've been doing a lot of swimming.  I talked with one of my other swim coaches this morning and she suggested not using paddles for a few weeks and then getting a smaller set of paddles.

And I scheduled a session with my ART chiro, so hopefully we can get this all taken care of and I can get back to being relatively pain-free.  Someone mentioned earlier that it always seems like you'll never be able to race/train again when you have injuries that you're dealing with....I often feel that way and sincerely hope I'm wrong.  It's beyond frustrating to have been basically out of commission since July.

On a more positive note, I'm glad to hear that your stitches are out and it sounds like everything is good there.  I'm sure the swimming will come back quickly....and you'll be back to running before you know it!
