So, I didn't drown in the pool last night!!!

Surprisingly I had more fitness than I expected. I am 100% sure I can't say the same for my form but I was able to finish the workout without the lifeguards jumping in!!!

I will say though, I think I had them a little nervous when I was attempting the drills. What a cluster.

*And just to emphasize how long it had been, I couldn't find my goggles because they were still in the sleeve of my wet suit from my last triathlon (that was August 2012 ...)

You have no idea how happy this makes me.

I knew you would no be happy if I simply posted my triumphs.

I looked like I was drowning. For sure.

*excited* I'll send you a tail so you can look like a drowned rat!

fcuk drills and fcuk tails and rats. Hmph!

Hey, whatever you're into. I don't judge.

Speaking of fcuk drills, one drill I absolutely cannot do is Superman (where you stretch one arm out, one by your side, and kick on your side). I can't even do it with fins. I sink and splutter water. And I'm really naturally (as well as ... uh ... well-padded) buoyant, so I have no idea what's up with that.

Oh, and more speaking of fcuk drills, you'll be very happy to know that Sheila frequently incorporates dogpaddle. I know it's because I sent her that one e-mail. She said so!

happyhappyhappySaltyhatesmeSheilalovesmelalalala

I really hate Sheila right about now, though, so it all works out.

Ha! Something I can do that you can't. I love that superman drill. (I didn't know what it was called.)

Also any tips for not looking like the devil when I get out of the pool?

It's bad. My eyes are blood red, terrible goggle lines (I have a tiny head and have to crank down on the goggle straps just to get them to stay on my face)

Don't look like the devil when you get in the pool?

ahem

seriously, have you tried kids' goggles? I also have a tiny head and I wear the kids ones.  They fit better.  And have foam so they don't stick as hard to your eye socket.

I'm so glad somebody said it

It needed to be said! She left it wide open for that.

Had my meeting, too BTW. It was awesome. I learned a ton in a very short period of time and I believe I won over a major ally/supporter of my goals.

I also got one more contact from her and he just so happens to be a triathlete!

(whos results I am stalking on the internet Smile)

Ergh! I knew we should have gotten TWO pieces of red velvet cake! No, we'll just split one, she said. It's huge.

Yeah, well now it's GONE.

Did you know they came out with Red Velvet Pop Tarts?  Saw 'em at Target last week but didn't buy any and greatly regretted that decision on the way home.  I did buy the big box of my faves, cherry, though!

Okay, I need some Manatee help, stat!

I'm doing the opening speech/prayer for my Dad's memorial tomorrow. To have a young (relatively, that is the youngest) female doing this is highly unusual, but even more unusually, that's exactly how Pa would have wanted it.

Needs to be a completely neutral, nonsectarian prayer. We got any Universalists in the house?!

Anyway, I've prayed about the prayer and I'm sure I'll be given exactly the right things to say but I would love to hear your input on encouraging, respectful, even unusual or interesting things I might include.

Good luck Yanti, thinking of you today.

Goggle thread:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=484103&start=1

Go to a big sports store with a good goggle selection. Take 'em out of the packets, lean forward, and without using the head strap, very lightly suction them onto/into your eye sockets. They should stay on your face comfortably with very little suction.

Am I the only one that regularly reads Google for goggle and vice versa on BT?

Hey all. Was supposed to go to El Paso today but ended up going to Gallup instead. Kept up on the chatter tho.

Ok so off season for me now. I have a couple of run events (wont call them races cause I will be happy to just finish) over winter but then probably a duathlon in early October and my first Tri in November.

My question is that I have a training plan for my run and swim but what do I do on the bike? I am fairly average on the bike, I have managed to increase my average speed to about 20km/h (12mile) so still fairly slow.

My plan until the end of August is 1 swim, 2 rides and 3 runs a week. Then i will drop the run back to 2 and pick up an extra swim. My main races for next season are a HM in August, the swim leg of an HIM in early November, and an Oly early in 2014.

Because of life I can only fit in about an hour on week days and a couple of hours on the weekends. Also because of lighting and road conditions my week day sessions will need to be inside on the trainer, I have a Kurt Kinetic road machine.

So, you will be doing 2/2/2 per week for the 3 disciplines?

Because you will only be biking twice a week, I would guess you need to make both of those sessions really count. Especially since you can safely go hard in both sessions.

As far as specifics, this is not my specialty but I would think one session of hard intervals and maybe the other session doing hard effort but more of an endurance type of ride? Building the mileage over time?

Hey everyone--thank you all for the thoughts/prayers...and for letting me have a mini-meltdown here last night.

Dad had his surgery this afternoon, they cleaned out all the pipes and added 5 (!) shunts to his heart and some surrounding arteries--apparently, the arteries that were checked a couple weeks ago and deemed only 'slightly' (as in less then 15%) blocked had suddenly become 75% blocked--hence his heart attack on Monday. Anyway, they got 'em cleared out for now....I am curious as to why they blocked up so fast--and if so, what will stop it from happening again....Yes, I am still being a basket case. Undecided

I hear a lot about Jorges trainer program...or maybe get some sufferfest videos.  I've improved my speed by riding the trainer.  Just crank up the tunes work up through the gears, I tend to do 2 mins hard gear, drop down 1 for 1 min, increase two gears for two mins, drop back one gear etc time flies.  Try to go for 26kph on the easier and 30kph on the higher, just half an hour of that, including a 5min warm up and cool down.  You will want to vomit but it's cool!

Sounds like they've done everything they needed to.  Now it's time for diet and fitness for your dad.  I know he won't want to and is reluctant to change but you love him you need to tell him you want him around for a few years yet.  Time to be a hardass. Glad it all went well, and welcome to basketcase-ville, it's where I live.
