The bike Elaine is looking at is a Lemond Zurich, the Zurich originated as a Reynolds 853 all steel frame, usually equipped with ultegra components or mix, sometime in 2003-2004 Lemond which was then owned by Trek decided to make a Carbon fiber/Steel combo frame also known as a spine bike.  see attached pic

these bikes were made and called a variety of names from the 105 built Beunos Aeries, Ultegra Zurich, and Dura Ace Malliot Juane (which is what i have). The frames are all the same, they just changed the name depending on the component makeup.   Reynolds 853 steel and Treks in house carbon fiber. The ride is awesome on these bikes, but they were known to have very long head tubes and long top tubes, which make them a nice relaxed fit, or just wonky to fit in general. The only issue with the bike is the rear derailleur dropout is not replacable, so if you break it off, the frame needs to get sent to someone with knowledge on how to fix it, but at the $350 that Elaine said the shop is asking, i think the components (Ultegra) even an older version are worth the $$  Heck, decent wheels are $200 now a days.  I have been looking on and off for a 57cm spine bike, i have a 59 and it is a touch too big, it was the first bike i built, prior before i knew anything about bikes.

There is Rudy's bike class of the day, heading out for Sat AM ride,

Elaine, feel free to drop me a line, Text or PM if you have any questions.

Gonna ride 3 hours each day Sat and Sun, my left leg is still all wonked up, i really did a job on it at Patriot.

i have not run since Patriot and probably will not before my sprint tri this coming weekend, should be interesting.

I hope everyone has a good weekend!!

Goose, as Fred said, we would love to see your Bio and hear from you more often.

Dude, if you are able to run in your race this weekend then obviously you did not ride hard enough.

It's "ONLY" a 5k

Rudy the last time I blew up on a sprint tri was back in the 80’s.  I wanted to win real bad.  I got off the bike well in front of the local fast’ies.  Half way threw the 5K I new I was in trouble.  About 1/2 mile from the finish I was passed.  Lesson learned!  Shortly after that I won my first tri in Hawaii.

Happy 50th Birthday to Me!

Off for a 50 mile ride to start my birthday and the next 50 years off right.

What is sad is of all the tests I have done (Polar BodyAge fitness assessment and others) is that my body age is 35’ish.  Granted those test are all estimates based on fitness.  The thing is how low the fitness levels are for the total group of 50 year old for my test to come out so young.

Happy 50th Birthday to Me!

Happy birthday !!

You are a whole 2 months older than me. Hopefully we'll get to cross paths in a race one day since we're same AG. Would be fun.

Thanks Fred.  I'll play, I could use a kick in the rear.

Name:  Marshall

Short Story:  In 2009, I found myself a fat, lazy, high blood pressured father of two young kids.  My primary care physician essentially told me I needed to get is together . . .  soon (I love her).  I started with a couch to 5K a run group at the local running store and progressed up to a really slow HM in late 2010.  Started swimming in late 2010.  I was DFL in my AG at my first duathlon in 2011.  I think it was like 16mph.  I did a few sprints last year and ended up with a Olympic.  I was pleased to have done it, but not pleased with finding myself in the bottom third of results.  I worked my tail off on the trainer this past winter and have seen a vast improvement on the bike.  Finished in the top 20% in a 50 mile bike race in the mountains a few weeks ago.  Considering I can't descend or corner, I was pleased, but man that was a brutal ride.  At my second sprint this year, I took 13 minutes off my time from last year.  However, a 26:xx run split absolutely kills me (although I realize it's better than last year's 30:xx).  Currently battling a lot of foot pain.  According to the chiro, my feet are "designed for pain."  Awesome.  Riding a CAAD10.5.  I'm working on getting as un-aero as possible.

Family Status:  Married (wife races) with 2 kids.  6 and 3.  The 6yo has placed 3rd, 1st and 1st in his first three triathlons.  I am constantly reminded that I have not.  The 3yo is going to be a better cyclist than all of us.  She's fierce.

Current Training:  No real plan.  Target 3x bike (two group rides 30 & 50 and one computrainer at the LBS), 3x Masters swim and 5x run (around 18 miles).  After having a good spring, my running has suffered (heat, feet blah blah blah).

Best Compliment:  Since you asked.  When you've lost as much weight as I have, you get all kinds of compliments.  It's great, but one stands out.  I was riding with a very strong triathlete a couple weeks ago.  He also was one of my "coaches" in a run group many, many pounds ago.  I was killing him on the hills.  He looked at me and said, "Who the h#ll would have thought you would turn out to be a climber!"  I could have hugged his neck.

2012 Races:  Two sprints in the books.  At least one more sprint to go (a race in which I totally fell apart in last year).  Probably going to go back to REV3 Anderson for the Olympic.  Also, a two mile ocean swim this fall, likely.  If I can get my run together, maybe a HM late this year.  I really wanted to try a HIM this year, but just don't think my run is together enough.  Maybe next year.

Weight loss goals:  I've dropped 70lbs since I started running.  6'4" and holding between 168-170.  I'm happy to keep it there.  I seriously can't afford another new wardrobe.

What makes me a good mentee:  Dashing good looks, and I make Rusty laugh.  That and god knows I've got room for improvement.  Thanks again for the invite.

TSimone - 2012-07-06 7:15 PM Heading to Charlotte in the am for a week. Found a great place to run and a small cycling group. My sister's neighborhood allegedly has an Oly sized pool. We'll see. Got the roadie strapped to the back of my Yukon and I'm ready to get back on it after abandoning it for 4 months.

There's also this nasty little hill down there I like to run up. Can't wait to reacquaint myself with it.

Fred, seriously I do apologize for jumping in your group and this will be the only time, but I started to look here after the Bryan situation (all the while understanding that you aren't going to read this post).  ANYWAY, dude, I'm in Charlotte.  Shoot me a PM if you can ride Monday night at 6pm from around Uptown.  Really good group ride.  Also, good ride Thursday night at 6:30p out of NoDa.  Both are sporty enough, but not brutal.  Great Masters swim group at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center through the week ($4/hour).  Very welcoming to visitors.  I try to swim MWF at noon. Fred, again, apologies.

. Goose you are welcome to join the group. Post a quick bio and we would welcome you. Seriously.
Wait! Don't we get to take a vote?????? /pink. Welcome goose. Good addition IMO

82 miles in the mountains: 7400' of climbing with three cat 4 climbs, two cat 3's, and three cat 2's according to Strava. Nothing special, just rode a little above IM effort. Followed up with 1 hour of running then 1 hour of walking off the bike. Knee felt great and icing it now. The tell-tale on it won't be until tomorrow when I find out if I get any inflammation. If it looks OK then I am most likely going to plan on lacing up my running shoes at IMLP.

Fred D - 2012-07-07 5:57 PM Interesting discussion about the Muncie 70.3 being shortened. I would have been disappointed myself as I've raced eagleman in 100+ temps with success, but I can understand the pressure RDs can be under. My suggestion would be that if you really want to avoid your HIm from being shortened or cancelled, don't race in southern Indiana in July as heat will be an issue commonly. Same idea with new orleans and steelhead which often have swim cancellations. Somewhat predictable stuff. Eagleman is known as a very hot race and people seem to accept that for some reason. Thoughts?

The only race I've been in that has had a course change was an oly in Banff about 2 years ago due to frigid water temps of around 10C. The RD decided to half the swim distance and allowed people to wear booties and mitts if they wanted. So cold and I'm glad he made that decision because it just wasn't safe to spend much more than 15-20min in the water with an air temp of about 5C when we got out of the water. The weather over the summer had been a bit of a fluke and wasn't the norm though.

I agree that if races are typically deemed "hot", "rough waters", etc that it is the athlete's responsibility to know what they are getting themselves in to. There always are extremes that change the game and make it unsafe for competitors, but I think if conditions are the "norm" that safe guards can be implemented by the RD like those mister things you run under, sponges, ice, more frequent aid stations, etc. Weather is a bit of an accepted variable come race day I think where you accept that it could be 35C, humid or it could be 15C with torrential rain and wind.

Though, I guess a part of the RD's job is protect some of us from ourselves though knowing that some of us would potentially put ourselves in harms way? Having a greater number of people require medical assistance during a race isn't good for a race's profile and makes the RD look bad for not making the call to shorten/cancel.

Speaking of heat, I did my first outdoor ride of the season. We hit 30C today and wasn't too bad biking in, but I suffered during my transition run. I know that isn't super hot for most of you but we have been hovering around 20C for the past few weeks so I have noticed the change. Going to get up a 5am the next couple days and get my runs in.
