I'm not sure who's worse off....me or you. I get to drive the whole way by myself (1,386 miles one way) with my three kids (8, 6, and 20months). My wife has to stay home then fly in Friday night. At least she's taking the baby home with her on Monday, so it'll just be me and the older, more easily managed kids.

FINALLY shored up some travel plans tonight. Nothing like waiting til the last minute. Needed two rooms now that in-laws and my kids are coming and only had 1 room at the Super 8 and luckily someone just canceled a room so opened one up. Only $85 a night!

Now the $3000+ I just dropped on airfare is leaving my behind more sore than any long ride will do me.

Going to spend another week after the race and drive to Seattle and Portland.

10 nights of hotels needing 2 rooms

10 day mini van rental

6 flights

sights and sounds of vacationing and meals = common powerball

Where did you find a mini van rental that was not an arm and a leg?  I need one but for the price of one van, it looks like I can get 2 cars.

Woke up to 2-3" of snow here in the CDA area. Thought about riding the course today, but think I'll stick to the bike trail. Probably more snow up on the north side of Hayden. Yikes! Supposed to be nicer tomarrow, but family obligations make today the day for the long ride. Bummer.

Oh man, that is CRAZY! I'm heading up there in 2 weeks and I'm seriously hoping for no snow on the course so I can ride it!

  • I like the idea of group swims race week too
  • I'm starting to get excited for peak training. What's wrong with me!?
  • How many 100 mile plus rides?  Last year I only did one and I felt great on the IM bike.  Last year's weather was cold and wet so I spent many weekends on the trainer.  Instead of doing one long ride I would do two 2-4 hour trainer rides split over Saturday and Sunday.  This might not be ideal, but it worked.  I also had two very challenging medium distance rides 60-80 miles including a tour of st. george with scary--blow-you-off-the-bike-wind (awesome mental training. believe everything you've heard about the IMSG course). The one organized century ride I did  I averaged 20 mph without any drafting except at the start when it couldn't be avoided (good for me. including stop signs/lights (not including 2 pit stops which I kept short to mimic IM ride) and I felt good at the end.  I plan on doing 3 100+ rides this year, but it's nice to know I have a fall back position if the weather keeps sucking.
  • I know my body and my fitness level. I'm sticking to my plan. If I was lucky enough to have money to pay a coach I would sure as sh*t listen to him/her and get my moneys worth.  I do like having this community for support and to keep me honest.

Thanks everybody! Happy training!

Some great suggestions:

phatknot - 2011-04-21 11:37 AM

my suggestions:

1. meet up on thursday, friday, saturday mornings for group swims, then break off with whoever you choose to or the whole lot (8-9am) for a run/bike/breakfast?

Don't forget about the mandatory dinner/meeting on Friday Night. (Another opportunity to hang out with the BT Cool Kids)

2. its too late for the neon hats for us and our support teams/sherpas right now i think unless someone has the urge to look into it more.\

Don't know about neon hats but maybe "Ninja Devil Duck" might work. I am thinking of gluing one onto the top of my helmet for race day.

3. swim in cold water now if possible! acclimate! i hated seeing that ideo or IMCDA on youtube where 2 folks got pulled out of the water then others all complained of being frozen still while on the bike.

Too late for this kid. Ocean here in San Diego is already north of 60 degrees. My plan is to get some swims in without my wetsuit before the water temp gets above 70 degrees. One of my normal lunch workouts is a 3 mile run to the beach, a 1,000 meter swim, and then another 3 miles back.

Might be time to bring that workout into the plan.

4. possibly take ice baths to get used to being in cold water

I already do take an Ice Bath 2 or 3 times per week. (Doesn't everyone????)

5.  use ear plugs, neoprene cap and additional swim cap, vaseline on face, and booties if need be. i have blue seventy booties and a zoot neoprene cap. i think your hands must be naked. careful to not get the vaseline near your eye sockets where your goggles affix.

I got my cap and probably won't know until race day if Booties are allowed. They usually are not but some RDs do make exceptions if the water is cold enough.

Another big tip: Bring an old retired pair of running shoes and wear them down to the beach. Take them off just before getting into the water and it will help retain some heat before getting into the water. The volunteers will take them and donate them.

Train Well Everyone

Couldn't find anything cheaper than $1500. Ridiculous I know but we have my wife and I, her parents and our 2 and 5 yr old so we are kinda stuck.

I have a new training theory.

Train my swim.

Train my bike.

Finish swim and bike by 4:00PM, leaving 8 hours to walk the marathon.

Being from MN I can access cold open water, but honestly I can't seem to bring myself to do it yet. I need to get some of the IMCDA people here to go with me I am usually not a wimp but 2 years of living in Dallas seems to have made an impression on me.

Off to run in the rain and cold now!

This mornings long ride of 70 miles turned into a dry run of "sh@t that might happen on race day. "First half was perfect, ate my new super-fuel (cinnamon sugar poptart) and the weather was perfect. Started towards home and after a big hill I went to shift up to the big ring.....lots of grinding, no shifting. Pulled over and proceeded to get covered in grease while tried to adjust the FD. Back on the bike and a few miles later, the chaining jams into the FD. Climbed off, said "f-it" and used my chain breaker to pull the chain off and removed the FD. Manually put the chain on the big gear and continued on. 10 miles later..flatted the front tire (first one in 900 miles). The rest of the ride was uneventful, and I managed to average 19mph.I'm chalking it up to valuable experience.

Way to finish it off! I totally feel ya on that - I had a very similar experience last weekend. Ride is going great, swallow bug, puke, regroup then double flat (in 8 years of riding thousands of miles I've never actually had one). Mini-freakout then calmly changed both tires. Rode another 20 mile and flatted the front tire again. $*#(@ No more tubes so I called my husband to come get me after 53 miles. It's a great learning experience and now I know on race day if the worst happens I can change flats by myself

I wish I even had an opportunity to flat today.  We've had some major emergencies at work and I ended up on-site all day.  I broke away for a 1hr trainer ride, but it's not even close to the 5.5hr ride I had planned.  I still have an hour or so of daylight left, but after close to 80 hours in the last 6 days, I'm wiped.  Enough sulking...moving on...

That sucks. I know the feeling it totally sucks the MOJO out of the workout. I actually went and bought some real tough training tires so that would not happen to me anymore or at least not as frequent.

I got my 5000yrd swim in but only managed to get 4ish of my 18 mile run in today partly because it started to snow on me and the “INCLINE” came back to haunt me today.  I woke up today with very sore thighs which hasn’t happened in a long time.  So on one hand I’m happy I had a great workout but on the other bummed I did not get my 18m run in today.

I usually carry a patch kit in addition to everything else.  The entire kit is smaller than a tube and it is extra insurance if you are out in the middle of nowhere.

Wow! Way to gut it out. At least it all happened now and not in a race!It is actually nice out today here in MN so I am going out riding with some friends today. 50 miles, should be good my 5 days of recovery after NOLA is over.
