Since I've spent the last several days gorging myself, it seems appropriate! I wanted to share....... We celebrated Jeff's birthday on Sunday - I planned the day! Got up fairly early, did a 15 mile run on his favorite course....which was trails and hills. oy! Home to stretch, ice bath and shower, and then off to a favorite local restaraunt (La Foret) for an amazing brunch, with champagne! One of the best brunches I've ever had, and a beautiful location along the creek we'd just ran along! Home for a nap. Out to Saratoga for a couples' massage (which began with a glass of champagne on the spa's balcony) Relaxing AND therapeutic! Nice little stroll through the village, then off for our dinner reservation! We ate at Alexander's - yum. It's a michelin-star steakhouse that's special-event dining at it's best! I had let them know we were celebrating, and they met us at the door with a glass of complimentary champagne. We'd brought in a bottle of wine (1997 Silver Oak Cab!) and they decanted it for us. Their never-ending bread service included 5 or 6 types of bread - including bacon popovers that were to die for. 2 different amuse-bouches that were fun. My first course was a sweet potato soup that we rich, smooth and yummy beyond words. Jeff had a caesar salad with a 65 degree egg - sounds silly, but it was wonderful! We then shared a dish of shaved fois gras with shrimp chips....it truly just melted in the mouth and will be permanently on my top-ten-ever list! My main course was a New York steak with applewood bacon, bleu cheese and I don't-remember-what else. WOW. Jeff had a 28 ounce Porterhouse that was stunning. Other menu choices included some Wagyu steaks that topped at out $250 PER STEAK. We didn't order those..... We had a nice intermezzo of passion fruit and coconut sorbet and then a dessert array that was unreal! Mostly chocolate - displayed beautifully - and consumed quickly!! As you may have guessed, eating is a favorite hobby of ours! It was a wonderful way to celebrate Jeff's 49th - and I got to enjoy it as much as he did! Today's Zach's 16th birthday. He stayed up last night and went for a run at 11pm with a buddy. Did 8+ miles in an hour. Amazing. Tonight we're taking him (his choice) to La Fondue for dinner. Ending a long run of birthday celebrations, appropriately, on Fat Tuesday. Lent starts tomorrow. I'm giving up cheese. This could be VERY UGLY, and perhaps, just a bit, very good for me. BAck to your regularly scheduled SBR programming!

I had another swim lesson yesterday and there are some things that I am definitely doing better like not crossing the mid-line, not flicking my hand at the end of the pull (don't ask!), keeping high elbows...but what was enlightening was how much I think I do not kick vs. how much I really still kick. My teacher is great...she uses pretty cool examples to get her point across. So she asks me to swim a fast 50 as fast as I can remembering all of the things we've talked about. Like high elbows, check. No crossing mid-line. Rotate body well on both sides, really extend the torso prior to the pull...don't kick hard. 46 seconds!!! Well apparently, one can go fast when kicking like a crazy banshee. I really thought I only kicked to keep my body afloat. Wrong! No wonder, I can barely break 2:00 on a 100. So, she gave me her bracelet to put between my ankles and told me to hold the bracelet and try to swim off the wall. Well, I got about 5 yards and promptly lost the bracelet. Again. Again. Again...until, I started to really rotate my body and pull all the way through...pushing my chest forward and down in order to extend my torso and create a boat like propulsion. COOL! This will be a drill for me prior to my swimming main sets, but instead of a bracelet, I am using an old pair of goggles to keep my feet together...it gives a little bit of play without the false buoyancy of a pull buoy (which she doesn't want me to use so I can get those legs to just sit more still on their own)...she's not a big fan of bands. I can also use a filled water bottle if I am feeling courageous. I really felt different today (after all of these crazy legs tied up drills) at my workout. Oh and breathing out steadily instead of in spurts is something that gives me a lot more time to breathe and not hold my neck so tense...I'm trying to do that as I sit at my desk right now! Swimming food for thought! |

Expert 819![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the Shadow of the Big House | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN -CLOSED DUE TO TRAININGWell an emergency call from the barn where I stable my horse and a trip to see the vet pretty well screwed up the workout plans for today after work. However, to show that I really am trying to get over this funk, I made myself go to the pool for a shortened workout after making sure all was well with my horse. (He's fine) I actually felt pretty good in the water for the first time in a long time. Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Maybe this will be the beginning of getting my groove back? Fingers crossed. |

I heard an interview that he did last year right after that race...he ran those last 2km on pure will, he said if he died doing it, it would be an honor, one of the most humble athletes ever and he still works full time. It was an amazing, beautiful performance. Saw this one over on ST. Amateur comes in 3rd at Tokyo Marathon running a 2:08 Pretty funny video watching him catch up to the leaders (about 5:30 in I think) http://japanrunningnews.blogspot.com/2011/02/mekonnen-wins-tokyo-marathon-amateur.html
This guy is great. He'll probably end up making the Olympic team. He puts so much into his running that right after finishing each race, he faints and takes a while to come back around. |

Swimming food for thought! Kim, this all sounds oh so familiar. My instructor hasn't tried the band trick yet, but I have a feeling it won't be long. I don't think you ever told us what that drill was that you had to do for 7000 meters. |

Sounds like what I am going through with our Middle School Odyssey of the Mind teams. Yotal lack of logic. Long story short: Our teams were told we could not meet off of school prioperty as it was a liability issue. When I spoke to someone from Wake County Schools they told me that child safety was paramount. I then asked why have you not told all the other teams from Wake County? Not just ours. They then told me they do not know if anyone else is meeting of of school properties! (The nature of the projects practically requires it). My response: If safety is your primary concern why not send a letter to everyone saying "If you are meeting off of school property, stop immediately!" No investigation required. I got no coherent response to this. I am convinced that idiotic slavish adherence to rules and procedures is killing anything resembling common sense. The fact that the shaving rule only applies (and is stupid) to swim teams and no other sports teams shows that safety was not the primary reason for the rule. I would love to know who reported the swimmer that shaved before the meet. |
