Remember the Canadian beer fridge Molson's ads? The highlight long one in Indonesia? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1iXYTwuuLxs I met Morgan because he was sitting next to us in a cafe in my dinky little neighborhood in Bali. So Kingsley and I decided to take a 3rd honeymoon (of 3rd wedding) in the remote island of Gili Air. Once here, K and I thought about swimming to Lombok (nearby but dangerous currents/eddies/conditions), especially as part of recon for our forthcoming Lombok to Bali Strait swim. No one's ever swum from Gili Air to Lombok before. However, Morgan recommended us the best boat captain on Gili (who also happens to work for him), who will be our witness/guide/spotter/support boat on an attempted double crossing tomorrow! It's only 1.5km there and same back, but you can't swim in a straight line. Anyway, we paddled it today--Kingsley went all the way over (I went 3/4), landed, and came back! and it's looking pretty good. If we make it, we'll be looking to make this a yearly proper race. A lot of other stuff has gone down too--both glorious and horrifying , unfortunately, but for now ... we're gonna try to set us a coupla world records tomorrow. Of course you are going to try to set a couple of world records tomorrow, what else would you do on a Saturday?!! Good luck and be safe! |

Veteran 659 East Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) Hey guys I know I haven't been around much lately. A few days ago a cyclist was hit by a car 1.5 miles from my house. Our local police chief is defending the driver stating it was unknown just how close to the white line the cyclist was riding and that the driver never saw him. He also said he wants to make sure everyone understands that the motorist did not hit the bike. It was the cyclist that was hit.............. Here in the video you can clearly see the truck swerve over onto the shoulder as he was hit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvs3xrO9_gw&feature=youtu.be I hope this goes viral. I'm tired of getting buzzed by cars in this town. Mark suffered 4-5 broken ribs, a broken scapula and a 60-70 % collapsed lung and has a gash on the back of his head, with staples. Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) Originally posted by mcmanusclan5 Hi Yanti I'm just visiting you here in Cra-ville, as it seems more your baseline than an exception! Good luck on the world records (how many times do you get to wish someone that? Talk about cra-cra). Tom - great race! In shorter distances (sprint/Oly), I usually negative split by a little but most of my open PRs are from a very slight positive split (and collapsing at the line). Same in the couple HIM's I've done (although could just be from lack of conditioning!). I actually have to watch the first mile off the bike, as I can end up going waaaay too fast - mostly because it feels slower than it is coming off the bike (and so I push harder than I should if I'm not careful). Salty - cool pics! Will you get the data? Also, to the above, do you know why the received wisdom is that a negative split is somehow preferred? I would think whatever gets you across the line in the shortest time… Just curious. Matt That was what I was thinking about Yanti - crazy is her normal! Matt, good question for Salty. Were they testing you or the shoes? At first I thought they were testing you but when you said that you tried multiple shoes, I figured they were testing the shoes (how neutral is neutral, etc.).

He was on the shoulder and the pickup left his lane to enter the shoulder to sideswipe him! I would say that it doesn't matter how far the cyclist was from the white line (he was to the left of the white line). If the cyclist was hit, it was an unsafe pass if nothing else. After viewing the video, not only was it an unsafe pass, it was more like reckless endangerment. The driver clearly saw the cyclist (and didn't like the fact that he was there). Cool looking bike path :-) I'd never ridden it before. It was, nicely, mostly free of old ladies walking little dogs on long leashes. We did encounter one lady with four dogs off-leash. We all slowed but it was okay, the dogs didn't give chase. |

A soccer mom (she actually had a soccer sticker on her Range Rover, so that's real, not a dig) tried to run me off the road yesterday. She was apparently pissed that anyone would be out on her road, honked and missed my head with her mirror by about 4 inches. I gave her the customary Mass-hole salute after that and almost caught up with her and her adult male passenger on the next downhill… She was trying hard to avoid that, as I suspect she didn't mean to come THAT close - just to send a little message (like that's OK, right?). Veteran 1100 Dayton | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) Originally posted by cdban66 Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by ponderingfox Had a great race last night. From the mass start, my swim put me up in the front pack, and then I spent the bike ride getting passed. My goal was to do the ride aerobically, and then have a good run. I averaged 19.5 mph on a 24 mi ride, and then averaged 7:14/mi on the run. I got faster every mile, and had a good finish that put the last half mile or so in the high 5:xx range (I was trying to chase a guy down, and got within a couple seconds). Finished 29/118 OA, and 6/14 AG (swim was 17th OA). A Good to see I'm not the only one thinking "slacker"! Though I've actually descended quite a bit a number of times by letting my legs come around instead of forcing it, going from 6:45 opening to near 6 closing. Something to work on. Nice going Tom! Tom, one of the things that hit me was the reality of "Ride for show, run for dough". My tendency is to push the bike too much and pay on the run, where as you had something left after the ride and put quite a bit of speed into the run. Great job! I like that snippet. I'll have to remember it. |

Super good luck with the swim. Jonathan, so scary that that cyclist was so injured so close to you. Be safe, to the extent that's possible. My hip/leg/foot are ok, although not fully better. I skipped my ride last night because I fell asleep before I could do it. Not doing any cheerleading jumps but the pompoms are close at hand to shake while I whoop and holler for y'all. Happy to do it - hopefully it doesn't get stale or drive you crazy! |
