I've been debating getting a speed suit for Honu and France as well. It's one of those things that I don't have because I've never done a race warm enough to consider it...well except for IMLP but that was more a weather fluke that anything. I'm used to 14-15C. Lol

Dear Abby,

I'm an amateur triathlete who has had 1 workout in 10 days.  I want to workout but my rear is dragging.  Is this just a matter of HTFU at this point?  I've walked a little but my Speedo and bike are showing signs of separation anxiety.

Sincerely,

Couching it in Columbus

I am in the same boat although have done a few workouts, albeit mostly EZ.  I think it is a good thing to take some time away and get rejuvenated although it is hard to do.

Mentally, I just do not have the drive right now to get anything done.  On the other hand, I do not have a race I really care about for another 7 months...so if you are going to drag...now is the time to do it .

I jumped on the scale yesterday....bad idea LOL.

Wow, i could have written the same letter to Abby but as of today my race was 1 month ago ...

Except that I signed up for that darn trail run next weekend.  Why did I do that?

Uh ... you just did a full, like, yesterday and you had some hard knocks (literally) just getting to the starting line.

You're still singing this song in 2013, maybe me worry.

On the topic of running....

This guy http://t.co/hXbVSRNqis an old running buddy of my father.

My Dad was a decent runner (2:45 at Boston at 55 years old) but he always ran against Ed. This guy never used a GPS, HRM or any other gadget. They used to run 100+ miles per week. week after week after week.

They used to end their run, take their pulse and if they were 75% of 220-age, they were happy.

In January he told me "you guys worry too much about your gadgets". Just go out and run.

I volunteered at the race since the LRS is the one putting it on.  I saw Ed out at the km 6 aid station where I was, and he blew by without taking a drink (actually a lot of people did which surprised me).  I was all packed up and back at start/finish when he came through to set the world record.  Really kind of crazy how fast he is considering his age.

And obviously the LRS owner was estatic that he did this in the inaugural year of the race.

As to gadgets - I'm with Fred (and I think you as well Marc).  I like the feedback, the information, being able to do some of the analysis, etc.

Can't wait to see pictures. How exciting!

I remember him coming over to our place to go running and I would think "what a bunch of goofs wanting to run around and suffer".

The other thing I remember is they use to not take any nutrition during their marathons. Gels didn't exist. I remember asking my father what he used and said "once I ate a banana but that didn't work too well"

I am a gadget nut. This weekend I am scheduled for a VO2max, LT....bla bla bla test. I got a gift certificate for it.

I am diabetic and I do test my glucose levels regularly. I can tell when something "funky' is going on in my body by my glucose levels.

For about 10 days after a HIM, "funky" things are happening. And these are not because of my diabetes, it just happens to be that my glucose levels respond to the "funkiness"

Take a peek at this. They measured "funkiness" 19 days later for Ironman full distance.

hey, it even says testosterone levels are lower. Maybe you should see if you notice "hot women walking by". I know I am not allowed to bring TT topics in here, but that thread was just too funny.

In January he told me "you guys worry too much about your gadgets". Just go out and run.

Lots of wisdom in that short, 5 word sentence.

When I was on my "run every day" streak (not streaking!) last year, that's what I did.  I just went out and ran.  If I felt good, I went longer, if not I cut it short.  I wore my Garmin every time but never looked at it while running.  I saw huge improvements in my run.

Someone was talking about skinsuits ?

For those who have seen my strava, I always swim that same 1.8km open swim up at the cottage, over and over. I know most of the fish by name.

The Tyr Torque is very consistently 2seconds/100m faster than a speedo. I am sure the speedo is fatser than a tri suit/shorts, so I would say it gives 3 seconds/100 in a race.

Thanks for that.  I've always wondered how much they really helped.

I'm in the same boat of never really needing one though.  I have done a grand total of one race that wasn't wetsuit legal.

I'm just starting to run again after a 9 month hiatus. Because my runs are still so short & slow the garmin is really irrelevant. I've been wearing it out of habit more than anything. I think I'd feel differently on long runs though. I liked ticking off those miles. I also used the gps feature quite a bit when I traveled and ran in unfamiliar cities. I was an EU road warrior for many years and preferred wearing a watch to carrying a phone. Kim

I will say that my swimskin "feels" fast, though I have no proof.

I think if your tri-top is draggy, or has a larger rear pocket instead of the smaller side ones, its a much bigger difference.

I probably should get a swim skin being that none of my races are ever wetsuit legal...but just something I haven't looked into yet.  I've heard similar claims...about 1 minute over a HIM (or 3 sec per 100m).

Desoto makes another one that you can also B/R in.  Not sure how it holds up against the Tyr, but if you don't have to strip anything off you gain a few seconds right there.

Pricey but maybe a good investment for someone who lives in Hawaii

or if you race ITU?  The one race around here that often isn't wetsuit legal apparently enforces some weird ITU rule that you can't swim in a skin and then remove it for the bike and run?  I have never heard of this but they DQ'd a bunch of people who took them off after the swim.  Even though it's not an ITU race per se - I guess Tri Canada must keep that in the rule book too.  I doubt it is enforced much.

I think you have to buy an ITU specific suit for that -- the ones with the zipper in the back.  Lots of silly rules for those races.

Yeah but it's not an ITU race.  They are just using some rule out of the ITU rulebook.  I should see if I can actually find it in the Tri Canada rules.

Oh man, that looks awesome.  I emailed with Emilio awhile back asking for a version of their ITU-suit, but with front zip.  He said it was in the works, but the Liftfoil looks mighty close - just no pockets.  I did a race once in their top designed for the swim (I think it's discontinued now) that left me very uncomfortable on the run without a front zipper.

To answer the ITU question, they do make an ITU legal suit with the rear zip.
