Are you sure your correction is grammatically correct? Take the friend out of the equation. Would you say "Me at a dance" or "I at a dance"? Probably "me", right? Methinks the original posting is correct.

Methinks this post is meant for pictures of hot women, and not for debating grammar!

"I, at a semi-formal dance." Still terribly, terribly wrong. "Me, at a semi-formal dance." Correctomundo! Don't be afraid of the "me". It's not always incorrect, you know; in fact, more often than not, it's right.

The problem is that the sentence is not complete.  The reader has to fill in some words to figure out the correct part of speech to use.  For example, "This is my friend and I at a semi-formal dance."  is correct.  Or, alternatively, "This is a picture of my friend and me at a semi-formal dance." is also correct.   Usually, the simplest sentence that completes the thought should be chosen so I go with the former example as the better way.  I would caption the picture, "My friend and I ..."

Um, nope. "I" is the subject form of the pronoun, used here incorrectly as the object of the sentence. (The subject is the pronoun "this" ) You would not say "This is I..." but rather "This is me..."
