Oh And I'm racing on Saturday. Finally!!!

Doing a sprint with the whole family.  750m pool - 25.5k (16 mile) bike, and 5k.

Michelle signed up for it last minute. She is a little panicked over the swim. She did her 1st race a few weeks ago - 250m swim. She had a hard time. I think part of that was the 1st race jitters. But we'll see.

Girls are doing the fun kids race. Last year the bike got SNOWED out, so hoping weather is better this year. Supposed to rain. good times.

So I did a brick workout this morning (every Thursday) and I find that after coming off the bike my sense of speed when running is out of wack. I run at a comfortable pace and feel as if i am moving slow but when I check my pace I am about 30secs per mile faster than what I think I am running. I dont have the same "feel" for my legs as I do when just normally running. At 1st i thought my footpod was just acting up but then I started to check the distance markers on the floor with what my watch was recording and it was dead on. Wanted to see if anyone else has this issue?

Totally normal. I don't know why it is but off-the-bike speeds are usually super fast for me, but feel like crap for about .5 to 1 miles. I work really hard to dial in the pace as quickly as possible (i.e. tell myself slow down, slow down), although for shorter distances the quick speed nice! Ha!!

Very familiar with the feeling. It quickly goes away as you get farther into your run. That is part of the reason it is called a brick. Your legs feel heavy and you don't feel like you are moving as fast as on a run without the bike first.

so it seems there are two issues here.  both of which are very common.  one of which will get you into some deep trouble.

-the feeling of dead legs.  don't worry, they'll come around.  i'm not sure the feeling ever goes away but as you train and race more you'll gettign a better understanding of the feeling and you'll know that it will go away shortly.

-pacing.  this can/will crush you as you get out to longer distances.  and you can't just say something like ok for a sprint i'll come out of t2 at such and such a pace.  you need take lots of things into consideration... course, weather, how you're feeling, etc...  and you might have to update your plan on the fly.  experience helps figure all this out.  i still don't have it down.  slow it way down coming out of transition then gradually speed up to your goal pace or hr or rpe or whatever.  not the other way around.

i think it's pretty safe to say we all go through this.  you'll get it figured out.

Agree on the come out a little slower and ramp it up...it is waaaay more fun to be passing people at the end than be passed. I have definitely been in both situations, more often being passed cuz I went out too hard off the bike! The one time I actually listened to my should and not my could, I had a great run! Now, can someone pound that into my brain for the upcoming tri season?!

This came up a while back about the benefit or lack there of for single leg drills.  This came out of an active.com email with tips from Bicycling magazine.  So for what it's worth:

3 Leg-Strengthening Exercises for Cyclists

Single-Legged Pedaling: Strengthens hips and backs of thighs; also teaches muscle memory for smooth cycling.

Happy Birthday, Christina!

Good luck and have fun this weekend, Sam and Trevor!

Thanks everyone for the birthday and race wishes! Calling it a training run is really just my excuse for being so slow of late.
