UUUUUUGH!!! Snowed in... the gym is closed and the roads are icy!  I guess this is reason 7 to buy a treadmill and a bike trainer!  I told the wife that I need a trainer and she asked how much (i told her $3-400), maybe I'll get her to sign off the purchase with end of year closeouts!

I took advantage of the one last week in Canada. I had some processing issues but Jen in Canada was nothing short of amazing for customer service and completing the order.

I had a very strong start in January. But between work and being Sick I really haven't done much in the last two weeks. I am still on the mend and it looks like the end of next week will be the end of 12-16 hour work days.

So Back on track after that. Numbers should have been almost double this.

I don't know if that's good or not, but there it is!  Running still is not where I want it to be, but that will be better this month with the weather HOPEFULLY getting warmer, more time, and half-mary training starting!

Sorry I've been a bit MIA.  Life is happening!  But I had a snow night tonight and I have a snow day tomorrow from school!

x2. I got a CyclopsII trainer a few year ago for $75 on CL. Best $75 I ever spent (actually that my FIL spent, as he slipped me $100 one day and told me to buy something nice for myself -- trainer it was, ha ha!). Just paid it forward and gave it away to a friend whose triathlete hubby is recovering from testicular cancer. They wanted to do his-and-her trainer rides together, how sweet!!

I have two quick questions:

1)  When swimming, should I be facing straight ahead or down at the line?

2)  Should my body be rocking back and forth?  I've started doing this recently, and it's a lot more comfortable, but I don't know if it's right.

I'm feeling better on my swims.  900 yards tonight!  I hope I can do it continuously soon.

I am assuming that you are asking which way your face should face. You do NOT want to face the way you are going in the (forward). You will have to do that when swimming in OW to sight, but when you do that your lower body drops in the water creating a lot of drag. Staring down in much better.

Yes. Turning your torso is good.

Aside from the minor detail of officially loosing my job, this day has ended on a very positive note. The hubby brought me roses,  I found 2 VERY COOL jobs to apply for, both my daughters are getting over their sickness, I'm making strong improvements in Master's swim classes, and our wonderful MG member DOUG transferred his REV3 registration to me!!!!   THANK YOU DOUG!!!     I'm off to have some chocolate to end the night on a very high note!!  (maybe even higher if the hubby isn't too involved in the hockey game Kiss)

My answers:

1. It depends.  While you don't want to be looking straight forward, some people find looking slightly in front of them provides better flotation.  I am one of those people.

2. Rocking back and forth is too general.  You don't want to overrotate so much your shoulders come completely out of the water OR you both goggles can be seen by someone at the side of the pool. I was taught overroation as a way to get air and I am having a tough time eliminating it now.  If you do the side kick drill it will illustrate how much rotation you need.

My two cents.

Here are January's numbers

Bike: 257.2miles, 14h:16m:14s
Run: 83.45miles, 10h:47m:25s
Swim: 20,745.28 (11.79miles), 6H:28M:57

Number went a little south at the end of the month with catching that stupid flu that has been going around.

Starting week 10 of my 16wk program and already missed a run and possibly ride. Did however got in my swim today did not do any speed work just easy to moderate.

Interesting replies from the others.

I've learned to just tilt my head upwards just a little bit, 45 degrees. When I swim, I see the surface, as well as the line, but not completely horizontal.

2nd question is pretty much answered. If you're talking about rotation, that's the way you do it. I used to just swim straight and move my arms only. I was so frickin' slow (2:50 to 3:20 per meter). After I took some swim lessons (some gyms provide them for free), and learned how to rotate my body and hips, I was nearly a minute faster..you GLIDE in the water. :-)

Good luck!!! :-

In regards to swimming you should be basically looking at the bottom of the pool perhaps just a little bit ahead of you. Secondly rolling from side to side is good if you are doing it correctly. It allows one to remain as aerodynamic in the water as possible. Think of walking against the wind. If you turn sideways to the wind you can cut through it more easily. The same is true for swimming. The less resistance you present to the water going forward the faster you will go or the less energy it will take to go the same speed. In swimming the most important thing is technique. I think you will find that a lot of us on here have had at least a  few lessons to get better. I'm sure Suzy, for one,  can attest to the value of a good swim coach. She didn't get her name because she always swam like a fish. (sorry Suzy couldn't resist the little (hee hee) dig)

Good work. Others already answered your questions.

But as for volume. IT will come and it will come faster then you know. I went from 900 yards to over 2500 pretty quick.

Glad your feeling better on your swims. Keep it up. I have missed swimming for over 2 weeks now and I really MISS it.
