There are still condo avail in the area. If you have a family, I recommend you stay close so that you do not get stuck in the village with the only way out is via tram and car.

Do you have any information as to where these condos are and availability?? This is my first IM and really don't want to be too far from it all. Thanks for any input you may have.

Hard to find condos...you may want to check Vbro.com and try and find something. Last month, I sent out probably 30 emails and found 2 places one was 20 miles from LP other one about 2 miles from race we went with that place. We had to put down close to $1K for deposit and big part of the week's rental.

Some folks use Realtor to locate condos but they tend to be more expensive.

Big issue with LP is lack of housing/hotels and inflated prices Ironman week.

Last year my wife did the race and we stayed at High Peaks Community college, It was a dorm style apartment.  It was in saranac lake so it was about a 15 minute ride to town.  I think the cost was only 100 a night for the room, so it was extremely affordable.  The only down side was that it was a single room with two twin beds so it was a little cramped.  There was one other couple in the apartment with us, but each door locked separately so that wasn't an issue, there were four rooms to the apartment, but for the most part most were empty.  I booked a room this year in lake placid, but my family may get rooms at the college again.

I did original bike course in '08. I liked the out and back.

I recall them talking about the bike course at the athlete's meeting and they said it was the only bike course that hadn't changed in time so going back to the original is good. They did chuckle about they considered doing the bike course the opposite way to start but decided it would be to difficult for many...can you imagine riding up the Keene descent?

IMFL is 11 days...after that I'll focus a bit more about LP.

Are you guys doing any special program for winter? Training plan? Using a coach?

I will take a break from coaching for awhile until I want to get back to more structured training.

My goal this off season is to work on raising my FTP to pre injury/surgery level and then some, run frequently hopefully 5x a week, and then try to work on my swimming in a different way than past 7 years.

Just found this thread.

1. Is this your first IM? 2nd
2. Have you done LP before? Yes - 1st year into tris. It was a disaster - swam too hard, ran too fast in T1, biked too hard and then suffered on the run
3. What are your goals for the 2010 race? Show up healthy and prepared.
4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race? Close to family, loved the course and crowd support
5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc) Not yet

I was going to do what I did last year and run a lot but I wanted a little more structure because I've been doing my own thing for almost 2 years ever since I started.  On my 4th week with my coach and feeling good about it.  Been focused this first month on technique, getting my bearings with the new style of training and it's going well.

Looking forward to reviewing the November plan in the next couple of days!

Crap everyone is so focused and prepared.  I thought I had a clue what I wanted to do, but I don't.  I'll follow a plan 20-weeks out, but from now till then -- I am still figuring that out.

I'm excited to start training, but not at the same time. I'm planning on starting things up in January using an altered training plan. Still hoping to lose some weight before I start officially training.

I've got the next 270 days planned out already!

12 week No Fluff plan (first 11 weeks)
started 10/15

8 Week Winter Run Focus
start 1/4

20 Week Intermediate IM
start 3/6

I have a Gold membership and will be using the online coaching on BT.

As for the bike course, I rode last year's course when I was up there to volunteer, and I rode the original out & back section up to where the bridge was out. I will be doing recon sometime in June once the kids are out of school.

For anyone looking for accommodations, I was surprised when I called the Crowne Plaza and they told me - "sure we have rooms for that weekend". Right in the action. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but if someone's looking, you might want to call them. Had to put down a 1 night deposit pre-paid.

As far as training for myself.  Now until Jan. I am concentrating on resistance training and nutrition with some short bouts of cardio and other cross training.  In Jan.  I plan on focusing more on running and then start the beginner IM plan, I used the beginner half IM plan for my first half and it worked.  I am looking for a finish, nothing spectacular.  If I cross the line at 16:59:59 I will be happy.

I was going to do the typical HIM 6 weeks out at Mooseman or Rev3, but the more and more that I am thinking about it, I am going to do the Mooseman Olympic that weekend instead.

I know how my body needs to taper and recover from a HIM, and with a HIM I need a week of Taper, and 10+ days to recover properly. ~17 days is too much time  for me  for just one race that is a "B" level race. I would rather spend that amount of time getting Ironman specific workouts in instead, especially since it falls within the Ironman specific training block. (My coach has me doing 12 weeks of Ironman specific)

I was going to use Mooseman 70.3 as a "test" for nutrition and pacing, but I don't see a HIM as a good test for Ironman nutrition or pacing. I see Ironman specific training as a time to figure those things out.

I did a lot of racing this past year, and I really don't want to do any races that will knock me out recovering for a week. I am saving the big recovery time for after Placid!

I have found Olympics to be fun. I can go hard, it isn't over in an hour, and the recovery time isn't long. I can treat the race as a hard workout and can carry on the next day.

Too bad, because I really love the HIM distance. I just don't like the recovery time from it.

Hey guys! Finished my first marathon on the 17th...and I guess I took a week off?

For the next few weeks I am just swimming and doing my aply nicknamed "injury prevention strength" program. My body is not really all that happy with me right now between being about 10 days post marathon, swimming and starting strength...but oh well.

I will probably start running again by the end of November because I have a HM in Carlsbad, CA at the end of Jan. My official IM training plan is supposed to start on Dec 20 in Maui...because I felt I might as well kick off some biking somewhere not -30C...and then I will have to revert to the trainer for about 3 solid months. I'll probably will do another HM in Feb in Edmonton...aply named "hypothermic HM" because it will be -20C or so. I haven't quite decided on my spring/summer lead up to IMLP. I need to hash out some training plan details and racing plan soon.

I also have to be on my game for school and get my time management figured out! May will be a huge month for me between IM training and I have a comprehensive exam at the end of the month to make sure I am competent to head into my 3rd year!

Good luck in Florida Kathy!

Awesome!  Congrats on your first Marathon.  4:26 is a SOLID first marathon time.  The mental toughness you you endured over the final 10k of your marathon will surely pay off at LP.

It's good beer too.  I have an Arrogant Bastard bike jersey that is sweet.  When you wear it you have to make sure you hammer...can't wear it and ride slow...

Hi Everyone!

Glad to see things picked up again. I'm enjoying reading everyone's plans!

Congrats to DC on your Boston qualification and mndymond for your first marathon! Great work! And good luck Kathy at IMFL! Can't wait to hear about that too.

I haven't really solidified my training races just yet. I wanted to do the Columbia Maryland Olympic distance tri but that is sold out now. I'm not sure if I'll do any Olympics. I'd like to do the DC Triathlon - Olympic distance again this year but it is 5 weeks out from IMLP so not sure that is a good idea unless I am able to do one of the long workouts from the training plan during the week and use that race to sub for a regular workout. I am definitely planning on doing the Kinetic Half IM in Virginia but registration and details for that don't come out until December.

As far as the training program goes, since this is my first one I have had to do a lot of research. I am going self coached and I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the Don Fink Be Iron Fit 30 week program beginning the last week in December. Until then I'm tapering for my first marathon on November 13... then an intense month or so of lifting while trying to maintain a base in swim/bike/run.

Hope everyone is having a nice October... Happy Halloween!
