Well so much for the 5K on Sunday, it will probably be post poned as there is a winter storm watch here.  They are expecting 6-12 inches of snow.  Oh well, just do a little sled training with the kids!! ie. put the kids on the sled and run around the yard with them Rocky Balboa style lol

padarinsmith - 2012-12-28 6:15 PM Went for my first bike ride this season, last one was beginning of July. It felt horrible. The excuses were running through my mind, "haven't rode in so long", "need a road bike instead of this steel mt bike with fat nobby tiress", "need bike shoes", "need a bike computer" etc. etc. Then the thought occured.... "I have everything I need right now. Intense burn in my thighs, pounding heart in my chest, air rushing in my lungs." As long as I have that instead of a full belly on the couch I am getting STRONGER, that is all that matters. Feel the burn, hear the pound

Love the attitude!  It's the right one to have.

Well 1 week after knee surgery the bruising is at the surface. But I managed to take my dog for a 2.4km walk today and I think I can feel the difference in my knee even while walking. However the end of the walk it started to get sore. So I know I am even limited in walking for a while.

But it felt nice to finally get out for a walk. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Sill have that Christmas spirit?  are you going to put it to good use by racing this weekend?  if so, tell us about it! what's your strategy to get to that finish line fast?

And with New Year's around the corner, take the time to reflect on the season.  what was your single greatest accomplishment? What did you learn?

For the new peeps, I post the race question every Wednesday so you can start thinking about your plans and to get you excited.  There is usually a second question for those of us on the sidelines.

Yes, still having the Christmas' spirits and looking forward to the New Years' spirits too (and maybe a little asparagus if I can steal some from those rain-dears), but no races for a while.   My single greatest accomplishment in 2012 was my near-HIM (2km swim, 105 km bike, 20 km run) - being able to have a half way decent run off the bike in 90+ temps was a sign that I was doing something right in my training.   What did I learn?   Consistency.....consistency....consistency.....you gotta have consistency to build upon.

Go Jayne!!!   Welcome back Doug, Andy and Spanky!!  John: a couple classics already ---ROFLMAO.   Great to see all the new folks too!

Now, back to my post Christmas, pre-New Year spirits.

And, here's my bio:

NAME: Dan

STORY: I'm 54 and live in Sendai, Japan. My first Oly was in 2009.  I continue to struggle with the swim but am slowly improving. My running has been pretty consistent for the past two years and that is not a bad thing, i.e., better to be consistent and building the base than taking weeks and months off for injury.  Cycling?  Slowly improving - looking to bump up my time in the saddle next year.

FAMILY STATUS: Married with two sons from my wife's previous marriage. We have 3 grandchildren and 2 more on the way.

CURRENT TRAINING: trying to build up to 6 runs/week ala Barry P and ramp up my weekly distances to 50 km (said this last year, but it did not happen....making better progress right now).  Cycling - on the trainer 3 times/week and looking to crank it up the intensity along with at least one long ride.  Swimming...one lesson every other week or so, lots of drills and I think my balance is finally getting better (but I said that a year ago too).

2012 RACES: 2 Olys, an HIM, a couple of HMs.  I had my first DNF in one of the Olys - bad swim, but they let me continue on with the bike/run.  The HIM was definitely my A race for year and I was happy to make it through in a little over 7 hours.   On the HM front, I improved my PR to 1:40:45...20 seconds or so better than 2011, but a far cry from the 5 minutes I'd like to knock off.

2013 RACES: Likely 2 Olys and one HIM again along with 2-3 HMs.  I am also contemplating doing the Houston-Austin MS150 bike ride in April, i.e., during a visit to the US.

INSEAM: 28 inches and shrinking...

Weightloss: not a problem as long as I keep my beer/wine consumption up.

Just checking in from my overseas trip; we're now in Cornwall down in the Southwest of England and as I write this I'm looking out at surfers catching waves in freezing water! I've just done an hour on the exercise bike at a local hotel, reminded me how much I hate those machines!!!

My biggest achievement this year was running my first marathon, the training really improved my running style and I learnt a lot about pushing yourself through pain at the end.

I know we swim with sharks every time we hit the ocean, but knowing there is a monster great white right off our beach... I'm sticking to the pool. Check out Mary Lee. We're on Isle of Palms.

Whoop Whoop!! Made it through our first swim in the pool. You will be happy to know that Michelle, Candice nor I drowned. Yay!! However, my homegirls are much better swimmers than I. We did, thanks to all of your advice get signed up for a swim class. Semi private lessons. And will probably be doing a stroke class too.

After getting in pool, I have found that I have an apparent fear of putting my face in the water. I know I need to do this to be an accomplished swimmer. Any tips or drills anyone has that can help me with this? Puuuuhhhhleeeeassseee!!! Tongue out

According to the Marist Poll for 2012

: For the third straight year 'whatever' has topped a list of the most annoying words polled in the U.S.

Divemedic,

I think that the American concept of college football is slightly different than ours! (ie. Acadia vs. Mount A).  Brace yourself for the storm tonight - supposed to dump a lot of snow on NS.
