I have twice now because of my iron levels.  I get the stupid brochure every time telling me what to do, and I do those things (generally eating more foods with high levels or iron in them) and then it still didn't help.

Maybe I should look into taking an iron supplement?

I have, twice.  Once because I had an ever-so-slight fever (like 98.8 degrees or something), and once I had my donation stopped once because it took too long (was a slow bleeder).

Endurance athletes need more iron than normal.... if you were training heavy before those times that could definitely be a factor.  Eat liver, or just lotsa red meat in general. Nom nom nom.

When I'm training, I often get deferred. I was told that being an "elite" athlete (their words, NOT mine) depletes your iron. One of the nurses told me to drink orange juice in combination with iron rich food (spinach). The vitamin C helps your body assimilate the iron. It works sometimes for me, so I've started taking an iron supplement while I train. YMMV...

Gotta love not having an office door to be able to close and let loose as needed.   Undecided

Go strolling through the office and try to slip out silent ones, then return to your desk and a few minutes later be like "uhhhh, did someone fart??".

Cook in cast iron skillets.  BAM - insta iron.

I heard back in the day, women had fewer iron issues because of this old style cookware.

I think "Blood Doping" belongs in the TriTalk section...

I've given blood bunches of time when I shouldn't have been allowed to... Not really...

Well, ok, once. I was in Guatemala visiting my parents and some brain injury kid had the same blood type as me (AB+) which is apparently really rare, like pink-unicorn rare in Guatemala. I had already downed two Gallo beers and my mom gets a phone call and says "Matt is AB Pos, we'll be over in 30 minutes". I was like "Uh, I just drank two beers." Mom says "It's Guatemala, it's fine." Doctor says "It's cool. It'll act like an anticoagulant."

That said. Iron is pretty hard to find without a supplement I think. Beans, Broccoli, Steak right?

That's pretty awesome.

Any type of liver is a phenomenal source of iron, and I think that pretty much all red meat is good for it, too.

Clams, mussels, oysters, scallops, and shrimp are all ridiculously high in iron.

Good night, TAN. I just have to say that I should NOT have ordered the black beans on my burrito earlier for lunch. Should be a fun run tonight.

You shoulda put sour cream on it....but that's another discussion that's already taken place....and you saw the error in your ways and were wrong.

The first time I got denied I was in the UK and trying to donate during my lunch hour... the nurse told me to go have a Guiness before going back to work!

I just can't do the liver thing, but I like red meat.  I should eat more steak!

I hadn't heard of the OJ with iron foods, but I guess it's something to try.  I've also just gotten an iron supplement for now while I'm training for B2B.  Thanks for the info!

I can't give blood because I lived in the UK between 1980 and 1997.....and per the FDA, I was exposed to Mad Cow and thus cannot give blood.

You know how many flippin' free T-shirts I've not been able to get because of this? Well....I don't have an exact number, but it's a lot. And ironically, I was a blood drive captain at my last job and set up all of the blood drives.

Every time I go in to give blood (and even though they HAVE my history on file) I get to tell them that I lived in the UK from 2011-2013 and they do a little freak out for a while until I calmly point out to them that 2 years is less than the 5 years for living in the UK that bans a person from donating.

Combined with the fact that neither of those years was during the mad-cow outbreak and the freak out subsides a bit.  I usually get asked to confirm the dates I was living across the pond at least twice more before they actually believe me.
