Pardon the intrusion from a longtime stalker/groupie of this group ...

Sorry TriAya - that is the best I can do for you.... Laughing

ChrisM - 2012-07-12 6:57 PM Little of topic, but Fred did you read any of the Freeh report?  I've just seen snippets, I guess about as bad as you can get.

Most of us in State College were not surprised by the report. I expected that the 4 (Paterno, Curley, Schultz and Spanier) knew about the incidents and had done some cover up stuff.

Going to be a very tough time in Happy Valley, but I have faith the PSU can correct their ways and get back on the mission that they need to be on, which is focusing on the education of young people and not on football etc. PSU is a high level academic university and can become better IME.

I'm not a big college football fan and haven't been to a game in 6 years.

Lastly, it could have been worse. It really does look like it was primarily just the 4 guys and not a whole bunch of other high-ups and admin/board people.

Sore subject for me in a way.

University of Hawaii AD and another school official just got put on leave because they tried to book a fundraiser concert with Stevie Wonder.  Turns out they paid $200k to someone who doesn't actually represent Stevie Wonder.

It's pretty big news here as people have been furstrated with the UH athletic department for a while now...but someone put it in perspective saying this was nothing in comparision to what's going on in Penn St.  I have to agree.

People make bonehead mistakes that cost them their jobs sometimes...but some mistakes are just WAY beyond that.

Is that an elitist, or just simple douche-baggery? I sometimes get the two confused....

It's a subtle distinction.  If your username is GoFaster, elitist, obviously.  If you're some schlub that hasn't broken 2hr in a HM, douche-baggery.

So a sub 2-hour half marathon moves you from a doucebag to an elitist? Awesome. I'm an elitiest. And it feels good.

Double awesome.  1:52 and change.  I'm still working hard on the d-bag part.

Mee too! I like the elitist feel. 1:53 and change. What are you of you are a sub 1:30 HM?
. Compared to a pro? Slow. Remember Ryan Hall went 59:xx in a half marathon before. Everything is all relative.
Haha. Very true.

Anyone heard of The Feed Zone? It's a recipe book developed by a sports scientist and a chef who have worked with a bunch of the big names in cycling. They have some interesting ideas for portable foods and a lot of the recipes have a wheat/gluten free and vegetarian theme to them. I bought it a few months ago but haven't been able to try some of it out until recently. So far everything has been tasty! I haven't tried any of the "energy bar" recipes yet, but might this weekend!

Computrainer this morning.  Finally edging up to and holding 255W for the workout, with a bump up for the last few intervals (yeah, I know, but I started at 190 in January).  25 miles pretty easy tonight with the group, including 2 laps on a three mile loop at hold on pace.  Come on out Tom - 6:30p at the church at Yadkin/36th in NoDa.

Thats a massive improvement in FTP. At your weight that should make you plenty fast.

Thanks Fred, but I don't want to mislead.  I haven't tested since March (238W for a 20 min test).  255W is just what I'm holding for the hour Computrainer workout that the LBS puts together.  Improvement, yes.  I would love to hold 260W for my next 20min test, but not real sure about that.

As far as tonight's ride goes, Tom! I could have used your help.  Here's how the 6 miles at hold on pace played out.  A couple of guys blast off only to been seen at the regroup.  Elitists.  A group of about six of us take up the chase.  I, like an idiot, had pulled for a few miles into the loop so I was dead and with another rider get dropped on the first (and only) hill.  So, she and I start working to pull back on the flat.  I, again like an idiot, pull all the way back.  We were hauling on the flat.  As we get back, I, like an idiot, decide this is a great time to take a flyer and nail it.  Good gap, until the next hill.  I'm popped off pretty quickly.  Those guys are a bit up the road as we start the long flat again.  Amazingly, another rider I know (not with our group), pulls up and starts to talk.  Anyway, I'm like, "You want to try to catch those guys?"  He's like, "Sure!"  He's a couple inches taller than me and pretty strong.  He nails it.  I sit in and and enjoy the ride.  As we reach my group, I nail it again.  I put about two blocks into them.  I'm thrilled, until I'm about to die.  Here's the kicker.  This tall, strong guy, pulled my group back to me.  DAMMIT!  He goes breezing past me pulling the whole group doing no work.  That all being said, fun ride.

Hey! I am a card carrying member of the BFoMoPOG's and I don't recall ever seeing you at a meeting - you are WAY too fast elitist for us.

Good luck this weekend James. Remember, all you have to do is beat 4:46:21. Should be easy to do, even for an old guy.

Welcome back to the group Rene!

James - have an awesome race, and enjoy the return to long course racing.  Based on prior results this year, you should do great and maintain your current elitist standing within the group.

My question of the day for the group.

I'm losing weight, not fast, but it is happening.  For most this isn't a problem, for me however the scale read just under 147lbs this morning - that's on a 6' frame.  Now, I've always been "slender", and my weight for the past couple of years has fairly consistently been in the low to mid-150's, which made me pretty skinny, but I could get away with it.  (When I started Tri's I had been lifting weights for a couple of years and was just over 170 - I was huge...).  But I think I'm going a bit too far down the scale at this point.

I know it should be as easy as calories in, calories out, but I eat a lot - really, a lot.  I've always had a fast metabolism, but now it just seems to be supersonic.  Daily I'm eating anywhere between 3-4000 calories.  I'd be really worried if I was seeing my performance drop off, but if anything I'm stronger right now on the bike and run, than I can ever recall.  I'm guessing that my CP is around 3.6-3.7watts/kg at the moment.

So, is it a case of simply eating more?  I struggle with seeing the point of just adding in weight (or fat), for the sake of tipping the scale in the other direction - plus it will almost all go to my gut anyway.  I'd rather put on some additional muscle, but until Tri season is done I don't have time to touch weights.  Honestly this all comes down to an appearance/vanity issue for me at the moment (and how my wife looks at me).

Thoughts on this rambling diatribe???

Nice ride Goose - for a self proclaimed idiot that is nice work . If it aint rougt it aint right.

Good luck James - You are in great shape and sounds like a good course for your strengths. Have fun!

Rusty:  That is a good dialogue with Bryan.  Glad you are healing up even though it begs more thought and questions about how you will race.

Got a nice hilly trail run done this morning.  Contemplating a swim at lunch but hate going through Grand Haven on a friday afternoon (beach traffic!) so may just opt for a ride and hopefully get a good OWS this weekend.

Catwoman - 2012-07-12 6:45 PM Fred has graciously agreed to let me join your mentor group. I've been a member of Fred's group before. The craziness on the main forum has lead me to seek sanctuary with a group of like minded people! Bio- 49, Female, married, empty nester with two kids in college. I've completed two IM's, multiple HIM's and everything else in between. My main goal for the season is to significantly decrease my times in HIM and IM distance at Redman and IMFL. Swimming is currently my weakest sport. We live in Texas. By BT standards I am considered an elitist and proud of it. lol.. My blogs are currently private. I will make a list of the group members here and add you to the friends list. Looking forward to joining the group!

Welcome, as you know Fred runs an awesome group!!!!  you will have a good time here!!!

so where the hell have i been???

I am on day 3 of daddy daycare, Morgan's daycare is closed for training for the past 3 days, so i took 3 days vacation to stay home and hang with her. I am getting my house straightened up, it was a total disaster, i have cleaned and mopped half of it and done about 10 loads of laundry, i have a sprint tri on Sunday, i have not swam or run since my half iron, i will try to lower my bike course record, my legs still hurts, booyah, talk about awesome race prep.

After the tri i host a BeerBQ, this will be version 4, i make ribs and salads and have some stuff catered in. In a bit i will go grocery shopping and get stuff for the weekend.

there is no way in hell that i would want to be a stay at home dad.

Oh and on my ride thursday am, i took down 4 Stava KOMS, so there is my front door brag!!!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Neil, maybe instead of adding fat consider some protein shakes.  I wouldn't normally say have a protein shake but if your looking for quick calories that will help with the muscle without eating a lot of food it could be a good route to go.  And yummy and refreshing on a hot summer day with frozen fruit stuck in there.

There is a blog I follow from a top female AGer and she was talking about this.  She was really giving it the big thumbs up.  Sounds like she has made a lot from the book.  She even meet the authors and raved about them as well.  I almost bought the book based on all that

Funny part is that I added protein shakes into the mix a few months ago.  1)  For a few extra calories, 2) I wanted to see if it aided with recovery at all.  It may be a complete placebo affect, but this season I'm recovering from harder days much faster than I have in the past.  I chalk that up to improved fitness, but if the extra protein is assisting in anway I have no way to tell, but it's not detrimental so I've kept doing it.

Every year the Pro tour comes to Montreal and they race a big loop, over and over. What's great is you can sit in one spot and see them go by 20 times, or you can walk the course and see them going up, down.....

Two years ago I was watching them and one rider pulled an energy bar out, took one bite and tossed it. It landed right next to me. I picked it up, look at the ingredients and the think had like 1200 calories in one bar. The guy took 300 calories in one bite. It was crazy. I was made in germany, I forget the name but kept the wrap as souvenir.

I have never seen anything like it. There must be an uber-compressor in a factory somewhere that squishes 1200 calories into 4 cubic inches of bar.

if ever you want to see the pros race I suggest coming for this race. Many/most of the big names are there and unlike the Alp stages were you wait 4 hours to see 30 seconds, here you see them over and over. it's really cool
