He just bounced out from the verge in front of me, even with me on the bike he was taller!!!
Ok, that's just cool. LOL, I kind of thought the same thing, I guess though for most of us that would be like a deer jumping out in front of us. Anyone want to go for a ride? Sitting here all kitt'ed up, smelling of chamois cream. Got about 10 minutes away from home and ran over a screw so down one tire and tube, missed the team group ride. |

I would love to skip the trainer today, but you are gonna need studded tires on the bad weather bike and all your winter gear to stay warm to ride around here this morning. On second thought, maybe the trainer doesn't sound to bad. I've heard there might be some coverage of a small stage race staring in France on TV this afternoon. |

Nice thing about being on a decent sized team, found someone to ride with and met a few more teammates out on the road. Yeah Paris-Nice should be a good show this year, lots of big names racing. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Gang! Glad to hear everyone is doing well in the south east storm region. Growing up in Oklahoma (tornado alley), it was not uncommon to spend many nights each spring in the storm cellar. It was fun when we were younger kids, not so much when we hit high school. Race Report: We had thunderstorms Saturday morning just before the 10k race I was suppose to run, the running club chose to wait to call it, weather radar didn't look promising so we chose to crawl back in bed versus braving the weather and getting soaked. They still ran the race but it was a last minute decision by the race director. Still waiting on some weather to pass today so I can head out for a run. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Need some input. I did my long run today. It was pretty much the same route I ran last Sunday, but a mile shorter today. Last week I got a side stitch at about 10.5 miles into the 12 mile run. First time that has ever happened. Not fun. Did some reading and it seemed like there were two things I could try to avoid the problem next time: 1) better hydration 2) breathing deeply and not always on the same foot fall.
So today, I get to about 10.75 miles and wham another side stitch. wtf? There were some good things about today's run compared to last week: faster pace, lower average hr, felt stronger, etc. But the cramping sucks. Any thoughts? 3 weeks and 6 days to get it dialed in :-) |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a cold 25 mile ride today; though not so much the temperature as the wind. Lot of damage and trees uprooted on the trail west of Dallas. I ended up with another flat trying to pick my way through the debris. If nothing else, I have learned how to change a tire over the past year. The best part of the today's workout was the "protein shake" of hot chocolate afterward. |

Yeah, I tend to think of side stitches and muscle cramps as signs that you're running beyond your fitness level, either too fast or too far (assuming good hydration, as Kim said). They should go away as you become accustomed to the longer distance. You're making so much progress on your running, just stick with it and those longer runs will become more manageable! |

I think you are spot on. I'm sure this is just part of the growing pains as a runner. It's just hard to know what's going on when things like this happen for the first time and you don't know if it's something your doing, or not doing, or just lack of experience. This too shall pass.

The only thing I've found that works is taking slow deep breaths at the first sign of a stitch. You've got to avoid short scrappy breathing and use your diaphragm. |

So, at the risk of being that guy who is ALWAYS wrong. EVERY distance I have PR'd is dealing with a side stitch. It is not beyond fitness level but AT fitness level. A side stitch is your diaphragm being challenged, but not your fitness level. If you can manage the diaphragm pain, you can make a break through! Blow out HARD opposite side pain and you can push through a stitch. With fitness, you will not suffer less, you will just go faster. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So talk me out of being a CHEATER, CHEATER, CHEATER! So, I have seen people cheat at almost every big race I have run. I have passed people twice on a difficult out and back, seen people cheat corral times so they could finish under cut off times, and cut swim courses only to pass them again prior to exiting the water. Cutting corners, drugs, and drafting... are they getting their money's worth? We as age groupers are not making a living off the sport we love.. period. We are paying to have support so we can push our limits as individuals. Is it OK that we cheat? My best friend is a sub 3 hour marathoner. We ran CIM together this year (thanks to Kim) and he is doing CdA this year with me. He is in the 10 hour IM range but has no desire to run Boston. His goal was to run sub 3 hour, and he did. He said, " take my spot!". So, do I? So, the point is: I could cheat and get in. Edited by cbarnes1 2012-03-05 8:02 AM |

So, the question is: I am taking another couple shots at BQ before the cut off this year. Then again at CIM for 2014. I have qualified twice for Boston and just want to run it but now if I put my wife's chip on my shoe we can run it together!?! She is not aware of this plan, but if I can think this crap up... did someone take my spot? Who are you running for? Yourself? You would cheat yourself of the fulfillment in knowing that you did it all on your own.

If you do this, somewhere out there will be a person(s) that did legitimately qualify they will be bumped by you. They will not get to go to Boston. It may be their only chance to ever go. Would you do this then? What if that person was you that got bumped? If you BQ legitimately, as you have in the past do it. If your wife can do it too then all is well, othewise, do not CHEAT. |

When I did my very first HIM, I saw several people cut the run course and do part of the Olympic instead. I felt like sh$t and it would have been so easy to follow the pack of cheaters. Of course I didn't because I would have to live with that lie the rest of my life. I really wouldn't have done my first HIM. Ironically one of the cheaters was in my AG. She met up with me about 1m from the finish and wanted to run it in together. I asked her how it felt to cheat the course. She laughed it off and said it was a total mistake. I made sure my foot hit the line 2 seconds before hers did. It didn't phase her one bit as she raised her hands in victory for her photo. Chet, I know you are not that kind of person. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Cheating is cheating. People have to live with themselves. But with Chet's example, I do not know if I would call that cheating. He wouldn't be taking anyone else's spot to be there if he ran as his buddy. Running as his buddy though to me would be dishonest and with liability issues. Big races like Boston and Kona, etc all have so many people there that did not qualify to be there. Sponsors exemptions, etc all run/tri those courses. I wouldn't have issues with it if the bib was reassigned though. Thank you Signed The devil's advocate |
