Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, I got one of these at the Sports Basement sale and have been loving it....not sure if any of you have it, but wow, NO more moldy water bottles! Eek, makes me shudder to think what I have ingested in the pursuit of triathlon. I think these were being given out after the raffle prizes at the Olympic Tri that Linda and I did last summer and we couldn't u-turn fast enough to get in line for a freebie! I should have bought one after that race, but forgot all about it until I recently smelled one of my trusty bottles...yuck! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() gdale - 2012-03-05 9:24 PM I know many of you rider trainers and CTs...anyone ride rollers? Some Learnings: 1) I sweat a lot trying to stay upright on the rollers. 2) Wiping said sweat with my hand causes me to loose balance and work harder to stay up right on the rollers. 3) If I look down and try to ride, I swerve all over the place - if I keep my head up, I ride much straighter. 4) When I started getting close to the side, I would get all jerky on the pedals and slow my cadence nwhich made me move the bike all over the place overcompensating - smooth consistent cadence provided much straighter ride. 5) In the beginning, I was in an easy gear which caused me to swerve a lot. As I went into bigger gears it go t easier to stay straight. I will ride rollers once in a while for a change of pace. I am not a huge fan because mine have no resistance so I just spin and spin and spin. (& YES, I have fallen off more than once doing stupid things like paying attention to one of my kids, etc. while riding! It is pretty funny when it happens ...... after you take your 10 second inventory to ensure you are actually OK.) Keep your head up, keep your cadence high with some resistance, and it will come. AND, the doorway is your friend. Google some roller videos on YouTube when you get time, there is one of a guy who takes off his jersey and puts it back on while riding on the rollers ..... and some other impressive parlor tricks. Why only a pink one? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey kids! Hope everyone had a great day! After all the running shoes talk last week, I decided to hit up our local running shop for some expert advice. Those of you that read my training logs know I've been fighting thru some lower inside shin pains. This is the first time I've ever had this type done. Last time I went to our military physical therapist (quack). He looked at my feet, told me I had high arches, ordered me some custom footbeds and told me to wear a neutral shoe. Didn't watch me run or even walk. He did help my PF, some, with the footbeds but when I complained that they didn't work for me while running, he said "Oh, those aren't for running." Idiot! That was why I went in! Sorry ........ back on topic...... Turns out I do indeed have high arches and I mildy supinate thru the walking stride, I roll my foot very smoothly from the heel around the outside and back into the ball of the foot. Running store guy said that was fairly common for high arched people. So I tried on and ran in four different pairs of stability shoes, finally settling on the Mizuno Wave Inspire 8 (also really liked the Brooks Ravenna 3 - but I needed a half size smaller and they were out of stock). Took a short 6 miler today to test the water, so far its good! Got a few hot spots from a brand new shoe and my legs were tired in ways/places they never were before; likely from the difference in stride and foot travel. Best news is the inside lower shin pains are now minimal. Hopefully those will taper off over time as the previously under used muscles take over. Wasn't quite the instant gratification I had hoped for but it IS A LOT BETTER! And yes, I do realize there is no magic bullet or shoe to fix all my issues. Anyway, that's my new shoe experience, just wanted to share it. |

but am really actually a bit surprised you after all these years strapping the uniform on you're just realizing he/she is a quack. head on over to zappos and grab a pair of ravenna 3. give em' a whirl

I have to admit the first thing that came into my head was: why go back to a stability shoe? I'm now a total believer in more minimalist shoes, I'm amazed at all the weird and wonderful aches and injuries I've had over the years with different stability and motion control shoes. If I run barefoot I feel fine! I've actually ordered some Kinvara's for my long runs and will use my NB Minimus or just run barefoot on the beach for my shorter runs. |

Thanks John -- That was funny! I really avoid the military medical honey shop as much as possible... I've seen a lot of peers go in there for back or knee problems, only to find themselves under a medical review board six months later, quickly followed by their separation papers. And they still didn't get the original problem fixed! Just an "Ok, now that you're broken we are done with you. Bye."
Thanks Chet and David! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know of at least one awesome MG peepette doing a little race this weekend. Who else is jumping on the train? If you're not quite ready to toe the line, take the time to visualize the last mile or two of an upcoming race. What are you thinking or saying to keep you strong to the finish? |

If you're not quite ready to toe the line, take the time to visualize the last mile or two of an upcoming race. What are you thinking or saying to keep you strong to the finish? Ha!! Maybe I'm a peepette? Yes, I am racing a half marathon on Saturday. I haven't run a half in a couple of years. Goal #1 is have fun and find some choice self-affirming words to get me through the last 2 miles. Loved Chrissie Wellington's article about this and even thought about holding my head high and smiling during a run I had on Monday that was less than ideal. None of my peeps entered with me (lame), so I'm running solo. Point-to-point race on familiar running grounds. After the race, I gotta get all cleaned up, don a cute dress and some heels and hit the town for my daughter's elementary school's annual auction. I hope my legs don't get stuck when I sit down for dinner. |

What are you thinking or saying to keep you strong to the finish? No racing for me. The bike racing season does start here this weekend with a Sunday Crit, but I am sticking to the plan to push my schedule to later in the year. However, the weather looks like some outside miles will be inviting. To all our racers ...... REPRESENT!!! My thoughts at the end of race vary. Bike races its usually along the lines of "Position, don't crash, position, don't crash, position, don't crash!" Triathlons its usually "Did I really pay to do this?" or "When the h3ll is this gonna end?" |

The weather is getting better and the days are getting longer finally. Even toward the end of my training runs lately I keep thinking about that runner's high I used to could find in college, but so far it just isn't happening. So I am stuck with thoughts similar to the aforementioned "When the hell is this going to end?!?" and "You started too fast again, dumass!" Good luck, Kyla and anyone else representing this weekend!

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No racing, but travel to Germany for the following week. As far as the last few miles. I try to remember images from video I have seen that I find uplifting, e.g., servicemen and women return to their families, people fighting disease and winning, Blazeman on the bike in Kona, etc. These people certainly faced greater hardship than I and that makes my "battle" that much easier to get through. |
