does anyone put new tires on this week?

Yes.  Well kind of.  I am putting my race wheels on today, and my race wheels have my race tires on them which only see the road when I am, well, racing

Pretty much same as DC - tires on my race wheels still look really good, so I just took them off, cleaned the rims a bit, and did a solid re-glue about a week ago - did a four hour test out a couple of days later and all was good. I would have no issues swapping them out before a race, so long as I had time to roll on them for an hour or so prior to actually racing on them.

I put a new tire on my rear wheel last Friday before my ride on Saturday. Everything worked fine.

Hi IMLPeeps! I know we talked about meeting on Friday AM to swim and for a picture but I don't think we picked a time! What are people thinking? Is 8:00AM too early?

. Weather looks favourable at this point -

How 'bout now?

Or now?

Every time I check it's a different forecast!

I guess that's what we can expect on race day; unpredictable weather.

I pretty much use the weather forecast as a bit of sadistic comedy.

I think I've got you all beat on tire issues:

Friday rode throw a construction site (road turned to gravel without any real warning) and devolped a slow leak in my front tire overnight.

Changed the front tube Saturday morning before my ride. 2 miles into ride realized that my front tire was going down. Stopped, looked at it, found a small hole but nothing wrong with the tire or rim. Replaced the tire with my spare. Tried pressing it up with my CO2 but couldn't get any air into the tire. Thought it was due to my valve extenders, put them on again and tried with my backup CO2 cartridge, still couldn't get air to stay in tube. With no other options, walked the two miles home.

Not to be discouraged, got home and started changing out the tube again. I did find a small pin hole leak in the old tire (once again nothing on the tire or rim that could have caused it). New tube on without any problems, pumping it up with air and BOOM! Blew the tire at right around 120#(normally run 130ish(rated to 140)).

Now I'm getting angry, put my last spare with a removable core on the bike, it goes on fine. Take my spare tube off the roady, find my Zipp valve extenders and put them with my last two CO2 cans in my bag. Head out for my ride again.

This time 3 miles into the ride my front tube blows on me at around 28mph. Almost lose control into a ditch. I was ready to shoot someone at this point. Put the spare I had with me on the bike, luckily got CO2 into it. And nursed my bike back home.

Ended up taking my front wheel into the LBS, they looked at it, didn't see anything wrong but they did throw on new rim tape for me.

I think someone just didn't want me doing a bike ride on Saturday.

Did manage to go out and do the ride as intended Sunday afternoon however so wasn't a complete loss.

(So in total 5 tubes, 4 CO2 cartridges in one day)

John - half way through your post, I was actually thinking "rim tape." Definitely been there before. I'll bet that does the trick for you. At least you have all that bad karma out of the way and are guaranteed clean sailing on race day. This is one of the areas that I have been somewhat (almost irrationally) obsessing over - in-race flat repair. And now I am convinced that I just jinxed myself by writing that. See, completely irrational. AAAAUUUUGH.

Hey RJohnson - I may be down for that - we are scheduled to get pretty late on Thursday, so it really depends on how late that really turns out to be.

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me as well. I'm thinking the map with the X on it from many pages ago would work.

Hi guys,

Just spend the weekend on Vancouver Island. Did a lot of sleeping! Now I have to get all my stuff together to pack up to leave for Placid on Wed.

Feeling better now, but still tired. Haha. I'm getting a bit worried about the heat out there since I live in the land of cool breezes and 20C right now...going to need to come up with a salt contingency plan for the race.

ALSO: MY NEW ANDY JERSEY CAME! YAY YAY YAY!! I won't get it till Wed night because it went to my house in Edmonton. SO I will get it when I meet up with my Mom in the Calgary airport! Right in time for the big stages in the Alps! ANDY ANDY ANDY!

Awesome news!

But whose idea was it to schedule a Tour race day right in the middle of our taper?!?!?!?!?!?

My presence at the Friday morning swim will fully depend on my ability to watch the Tour stage on Friday....I cannot miss Alp d'Huez...haha. If I can stream it on my comp once I get to the hotel I probably will join you all...otherwise I will be chilling in my room with my new Andy jersey screaming at the TV. I'm super cool

RE: new tires. I'm getting race wheels from RDW for the race. 404 clinchers. I'll be switching to new Vittoria Diamante's for the race rather than using the provided tires though...I've NEVER had a flat with my Vittorias and feel I should stick with the old faithful. 3 years of riding and 0 flats!! (except once randomly on the trainer...but I think that was more heat related)

So, here's a question for the masses; can we leave our shoes clip in for the bike dismount? According to the athlete guide, on pros can have their shoes clipped in for T1, but it doesn't specifically mention dismount:

7. Shoes must be placed inside the athlete’s bike-to-run gear bag in transition and may NOT be attached to
the pedals. Only professional athletes may attach shoes to the pedals.

I asked my beautiful wife of 30 years (who knows her way around a sewing machine), if she could sew an extra pocket on the back of my US Air Force triathlon top, since it only has two rather small side pockets. I'm a retired AF officer so I wanted to be able to fly the colors during IMLP. She agreed to do so. I just walked upstairs to see how things were going and I asked her "isn't that the front?" Whoops, it's currently being taken off of the front, and placed on the back of the jersey! (I hope)

So now you know what I'll be wearing for the race!

Ralph - that is absolutely priceless!
I might have left it on the front though - coulda come in VERY handy for the last half of the marathon... I probably will not be able to reach around to the back of mine at that point...

But I want to look cool like the Tour De France riders (using the Bobke pronunciation) and reach around the back for my nutrition while on the bike!

Awesome - is she taking orders for those?
I am afraid I need A LOT more help than that to look like a tour rider though, Like losing 20 pounds and gaining another 150 watts for starters! LaughingLaughing

I need the extra pockets in my top because I'm going to be on the course a lot longer than most of you guys! You'll be well into the run by the time I get off of the bike. I anticipate being in the 14 hour range. I'm a mediocre swimmer and not much better on the bike. But hopefully at the end of the day I'll be an Ironman! That's my one and only goal for Sunday.

Looking forward to meeting you all later this week!
