This info is probably available elsewhere or will be obvious at check-in but do check our special needs bag in the morning of?  I assume it is in the morning so nutrition doesn't go bad for those electing to have a couple of frozen bottles or something?

came up at coffee this morning with the group so was wondering.  I may elect to have some backup nutrition just in case.

I think acumenjay is referring to the special needs bags, not the run/bike (T1, T2) bags.
Typically you drop your special needs bags off the morning of the race at designated areas so they can be transported to the special needs areas on the course.

Sort of. You drop the special needs bags off on race morning up next to the swim start area of mirror lake. Both the bike and run special needs bags are right on the road on separate sides. A volunteer will take them from you and then arrange them by number. During the race, they will call out your number in advance and have them ready for you. The only transportation required is you walking up the road to drop them off.

I understand transitions stuff needs to be in bags on Saturday, but does that include nutrition for the bike, like bottles full of liquids? I thought we'd have access to the bike Sunday morning to load bottles, fill up bento boxes, etc. I know we can air up tires on Sunday morning so I figured we'd have access to the bikes.

T1 - bike shoes, helmet, glasses & race belt

BSN - extra tube, CO2 cartridge

T2 - running shoes, socks & race belt pouch

RSN - nothing

Keeping it super simple.

So I think I've decided to err on the side of caution after hearing about all the Ironman Perform issues people have had and just carry my own nutrition for the most part. It is a bit of a pain but I figure trying the Ironman Perform for the first time and ending up in GI distress is not the way to go. Canada's equivalent of the FDA hasn't allowed it here get due to the amount of sodium so I haven't been able to practice using it.

Who else is primarily carrying their own nutrition vs. feeding off of what the course provides?

Got a text from a friend in LP.  Water temperture was 81 degrees this afternoon.  Weather is supposed to be warm the next few days.  Hopefully it stays warm and the swim is wetsuit illegal.

Bring that with you the morning of so your nutrition doesn't get nasty overnight. You're right on with your thought with having access to your bike the morning of the race. That way you can check it over, remove any plastic bags you may have put on your seat and handlebars (recommended bc of dew or rain), get the tires pumped up and put your bottles and nutrition on it.

I'm only this knowledgeable because I worked transition last year and was able to sneak in with my wife the next day because I still had my transition volunteer band on.

The same rumor was floating around last year as well.  Seriously doubtful it will be wetsuit illegal, as they go pretty deep to determine it.  Last year  believe official temp was 75.

I'm jealous of everyone's simple bag gear plans!

Mine started out that way but over the course of the past two days I keep thinking oh I'll throw that in there, oh I'll need that, etc.

I'm becoming an Ironman bag HOARDER!

Not really a rumor.  More of a will the weather be so warm that they can't find a cold spot.  USAT official takes the temperature at an arms length down (so about three feet from the surface).  Weather in LP in predicted to be in the low 90s over the next few days with no rain.  Just looks like it'll be a potential.

I am living off the course 99.9%.
I will have a couple of extra gels on me along with electrolytes, but that is it.
I am pretty much in the same camp as Kelly - except I will be wearing socks on the bike - you, know, just because I think you should pamper yourself, sometimes.

I have been going back and forth about whether I want anything "special" in my special needs bags, and just cannot think of what I would put in there, but then again, I might be begging you for some vinegar and salt potato chips around mile 13.

I figure it is really  only 17 hours max - that is not too long to be hot, cold, wet, cramping, sore, tired, rashy and starving, is it?

Is it?

What weather sites are yall looking at, I see 89 on Accuweather for one day and a little less on weather.com, with temps range from high 40-mid 60's at night.  It doesn't bother me either way but I bet it is no where near 81 degrees and it will be wetsuit legal.

I remember reading Kansas 70.3 threads and showing the Corps reading of 81 degrees.  They must have read that at surface temperature at the office cause I really doubted it.  I was swimming in 80 degree water in MS and I had been watching the weather for a month and I knew we were alot warmer than Kansas was.  We got up there and I sent my 6 year old daughter in the lake first to see what her reaction was.  She turned around and said its cold Daddy, I knew we were good to go then.  Lake was 74 degrees.

Not to be snarky, but why? If you don't like a wetsuit, don't wear one. I'd like a cool morning with chilly water. I enjoy swimming with my wetsuit on and would prefer if the water's not too warm.

You're not out there for very long and (especially on the run) you're at an aid station every mile with tons of stuff.  If I haven't trained with it, I'm not using it on race day and everything I've trained with is on the course (and then some).

I swim better against the field without a wetsuit.  There is barely any difference in my swim times when wearing a wetsuit than when not wearing a wetsuit.  Most people gain a pretty significant advantage, I don't.  If the swim is wetsuit illegal, I end up swimming better (relative to the field).

Its not about me wearing or not wearing a wetusit.  Its about everyone else.

I wonder what % of the field would consider a DNS if it was not wetsuit legal??

Any thoughts??

Interesting question. I'd prefer a wetsuit but wouldn't hesitate for a second to race without one. Just getting to the start of an IM takes a lot of work so I have to think (hope) not too many people would pull out.
