We're getting a new car soon, and our old car has almost no value for trade-in, so we would like to donate it to a charity. Has anyone ever done this? Anyone care to suggest a good cause we might consider donating to? We're in Pennsylvania (Philly area) if that matters.

I'd like to know the same...i was thinking about researching on if they'd take my SUV, which is mint interior and exterior but had a bad waterpump leading to a head gasket failure... I never fixed it

Do charities take cars that need simple love?

From the little bit of research I have done, most charities that accept car donations will take a car in any condition. There is some good information here on rules for tax deduction, etc....

Yup, I've donated the last three of them I've had to the Purple Heart program for wounded and disabled Vets:

http://www.purpleheartcars.org/

Just make sure all your personal stuff is out of the car, leave the title in the glove box or be there to hand it to them and the keys in a place they know about. Write up all the major stuff it needs and they'll haul it away within a couple days.

Thanks for that, Dan, Purple Heart seems like a good choice....

I was in the same boat about 2 years ago when I bought my new truck.  The '93 Grand Am with 135,000 miles on the clock wasn't worth anything for a trade in, and I didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to sell it for $500.  I donated it to a place called Melwood.  Not sure if you've got them up there, but they help special needs folks with jobs and independent living and such.  It was real simple, I sent them the info on line and they scheduled a date for pick up.  I wasn't even home at the time.  I got a letter about 2 days later with for the donation and had a $650 deduction for my taxes! The whole thing was super simple and a Win-win.

I donated an Isuzu Rodeo a few years back (to a Parkinson's disease research foundation). Got all the info online, filled it out online, and they came and picked it up. Needed a few parts, and wasn't running at the time (but only needed about $1000 put into it to make it road-worthy, unfortunately that was more than it was worth).

Have you considered a local tech college?

I donated a car a few years ago - I had a Honda Civic with somewhere around 205,000 on it when it died.  I put in a new alternator which brought it back to life but it still had problems so I decided it was time to sell it & just get whatever i could for it.  About a week later someone broke into it and stole radio (which had stopped working anyway) by tearing out the whole dashboard so I figured I'd just donate it instead.

My first idea was to donate it to NPR, mainly because that was the only place I had heard of at the time that took cars.  It turned out though that they wouldn't take it if it had a broken window (really??) so after a little research I found a website that listed all the CO charities that would take a car and ended up donating to a charity that deals with ALS.  Left the title in the glove compartment and a day later it was gone.   Got a letter later on for tax purposes saying they got $1300 for it at auction which suprised me, but in a good way.

Depending how much time you want to go through, you might be able to do what I did.

I went to a local homeless shelter, and asked if they could accept a car if I donated it. They were not set up to legally do so, but when they got offers, they asked if it would be ok to line up someone they would recommend that could use it, and then I could just give it to them.

So I said sure. I had to go to the tag place and do a title transfer where I sold it to him for $1. The guy who got it, (and it was an ugly car, but in working condition with no issues) had been walking work from this shelter for a long time, and had a good work ethic. 2 weeks after he got the car, my wife saw him driving it, with a woman along. We thought maybe getting wheels helped him in more ways than one.

So there's something you could do - it takes more time, and probably no tax deduction, but it is quite rewarding.

That's an awesome idea. Unfortunately, right now, although the car runs perfectly well, it needs some repairs that would likely be out of reach for someone in the situation you described (the windshield has a small crack and will need to be replaced and the exhaust system is shot - the car won't pass inspection without fixing those issues, plus the radio and AC no longer work - which are certainly not necessities for getting from here to there, but are nice to have....). Unless some intermediary was able/willing to put the money into the car to make it road-worthy, I don't think that would work for us. I commend you for your donation, though! I'm sure the recipient appreciated it!!
