I walked into Starbucks for my daily Mocha and there he was.... I leaned over and asked excuse me but are you Scott Tinley he smiled and then replied yes ... I then had a 10-15 min conversation with him..... telling him what a big fan I was..... I have to say it made my day meeting one of the legends of the sport and realizing what a great guy he is...

deepbluesea - 2006-01-11 5:11 AM Wow!!!

Nice to hear that some of them are good people, too.

[rambling]I'm sure that this is a terrible generalization with plenty of counter-examples.  But it seems like the "marginally famous" or "locally famous" types are usually much more agreeable/amiable with their fans.  Meanwhile, it seems like any of the "really famous" or "borderline household names" that I've run across have been for the most part stand-offish and rude.  I don't know if it has to do with not being burned out or the fact that the less famous folks can still remember what it's like to walk two blocks with out being asked for a picture or autograph or having someone with a telephoto lense take pictures of their kids.[/rambling]

Either way it's awesome that you got to mee him and I am wicked jealous.

Edit - well I'll be, that was my 1,000th post, don't you feel special now?

Way cool! Everything I've read about him indicates that he's a classy, nice guy. Guess it's true. Makes you feel good about our sport, especially when you see all the headlines about guys like Marcus Vick and Maurice Clarett.

Bryan,

Very Cool!

BTW, Steve Scott (the 4 min/mile guy) lives and works right up the street from you. He said that whenever people recognize him, they always say "Are you Steve Scott? You are my favorite Ironman" I wonder how many people think Scott Tinley is the 4 min/mile guy too

Invite him to the forum here! That would be outstanding if he would come and give us wise words of wisdom from one of the greats!

Scott Tinley was the triathlete that got me interested in tri's back 12 or so years ago. I read everything that had his name attached to it at the time.

Wow,

it's one thing to meet a guy like Scott Tinely and him being a great guy and very approachable...BUT it's another thing all together for him to email you and tell you that it was nice meeting you and to let him know if he can help you with your training......and you're not even a hot chick!!!  That is truly amazing

After reading some of Scott Tinley's writings I found his e-mail and dropped him a line not really figuring on getting a response. He responded and was very encouraging in my pursuit! I think he is one classy guy it would be great to see him pop up here!

I just emailed him through his website thanking him for being an inspiration over the years and for being cool to a fellow BT'er.  I think it would be a most excellent way to thank him if everyone else who's a fan of his emailed him to thank him for that too.  He'd probably get a kick out of getting 10, 50, 100 emails like that.

Update to this post:  He emailed me back almost immediately thanking and encouraging me to keep training.  What a guy.

Very cool. Tri pros may not get incredibly wealthy, but the top ones seem to achieve a level of fame that seems quite manageable and allows them to have a pleasant level of contact with fans.

I would guess that many of them have already checked out this forum at least once. I doubt that any would register and post under their real names though for fear of generating a slew of "Hey Scott, (Simon, Hunter, Lori, Jessi etc..)" threads that they couldn't possibly answer.

Right Jessi?

I ride on Maxxis tires because of her...

CHA CHA CHA! Not only is she hot, but she is smokin' fast on the iron steed
