Nice! My dad knows wild mushrooms, but I never learned the foraging technique.

Passed to me by my Grandpa......and dutifully passed on to my children by me.

You must live somewhere nice and warm :)  Those look delicious.  I'm envious.

We love em.  It's still freakishly cold here though.  My prediction is we'll be looking at the second week of May this year (almost a full month behind last year), but nice and wet, so I'm hopeful it will be a good year.

From a decent day at the sweet spot on the back 40 last year:

From tapping this spring (got 2.5 gallons total):

And the babies have started coming.  Here's a day old bottle Nubian goat:

Spring is so sweet.

My dad started hunting mushrooms within the last few years. He used this to get all of his analysis and hasn't really had any issues. He's a bit obsessed with it now.

No morrels 'round here, we do get lots of chantreles.  They're a kind of a big deal.  Would love to experience the morrels...

You don't put them in a basket?  I wouldn't have figured you for having loose morels...

Oooooh, me me me I love morels! I grew up in the concrete jungle so I have zero foraging skills. Now that I live in Vermont I'm tempted to see what's out there but I wouldn't trust myself to forage. I do have a friend who's good at it!

I'm telling your boss you're doing mushrooms...  ;-)

My dad and I used to hunt for mushrooms every year.  I never developed a taste for them, but I have a lot of great memories.

Everyone in my town would like to have a word with those "officials" who say it is spring right now.  Just a few hours north of St. Paul MN, I woke up to 1.5 foot snow drifts, about 8 inches of snow (in addition to the 5 yesterday and the 3 the day before) and almost had a snow day (the only one in the year).

Spring my red bike!!

My dad was an avid morel hunter.  Just about this time each year, he'd head to all the usual spots in northern MI.  I have very fond memories of being there with him.  He'd spot one, pretend he didn't see it as he led us right to it, then let me think I found it.  For years he'd tell everyone what a gifted morel finder I was Smile

He would've been mad this year with snow still on the ground......

I can't stand mushrooms though I'm a pretty picky eater.  Last time I ate mushrooms was in college and they made us invisible.

Still waiting on Spring around here.  I hear it may arrive next week.

I like looking around sycamore and ash trees in creek bottoms for my best spots......or maybe I just love walking along a creek so I like those spots more. Laughing

Bump.

Our first morels of this year.  The best part was that our kids found (really found) a bunch of them :)

And while we were looking we saw a snapping turtle trekking to her nest spot.  The kids also got to practice their garter snake catching skills and bird ID.  Awesome nature day.

Where do these grow? Based on the post, I'm guessing up north? NE?

They grow all over the US (though not in the desert and really hot areas).  This is a great site for pics and questions http://thegreatmorel.com/faq.html

And here's a link to the 2013 morel sightings map You can go directly to your area and see if there have been reports there this year.

Thanks, "with the exception of deep southern coastal region". That's what I thought. Maybe I can go look for them with I get up to the midwest at the end of the month.

I just noticed "Cajun Country" under your pic.

The morels have a short window, which I'm guessing will be closed at the end of May, but it's hard for me to feel too sorry for anyone who lives in a "deep southern coastal region";)

Girl, if I thought I could get them to you in any kind of acceptable condition, I would send you some in a heartbeat!
