Subject: Swim training for HIM all OW vs pool?
My gym membership expires June 9 and I'm considering not renewing it.  I only use the gym for swimming 3 X week.  It's a 30 minute drive from my house.  There is a beach where I do OWS 10 minutes from my house.  Does anyone do all of their swim training in OW  vs pool?

How many months can you do OWS in Ontario?

I'll bet almost the entire month of summer.

Not for long.  After my HIM in Sept. I'm planning to concentrate on running for a while and maybe do a couple duathlons next year and a fall BQ marathon attempt (fall 2010). So I wouldn't be swimming all winter/spring anyway. (all subject to change at any time of course)

I think the pool is better for intervals since you get pace feedback.  But there's no reason why you can't do fine with all OWS.  Do intervals by time or stroke count.  And OWS is obviously great for long, steady swim days.

OWS sounds like a reasonable option for you.  If the convenience, money savings, and enjoyment factor are all there for you with OWS, then go for it.  I gave up my gym membership to do all my swim training in my backyard pool using a tether.  If I lived close to the ocean, I'd certainly consider that as a viable option, too.  I think the quality of your swim training OWS will be just fine.  You'll be that much more comfortable with OWS come race day.

I would suggest you do some intervals in the open water similar to what JohnnyKay said.

I did lots of ows in past two years but mostly did long swims. I think doing intervals from this point to that point would have been beneficial for me. As always going long and slow made me good at going long and slow.

Drop the gym membership and if you need to use a pool buy a day pass or find another pool that offers daily type admission.

Does the beach have buoys marking the swim area?   I swim at a beach with two giant buoys and use them for "laps".  Might be just like going to the pool. I would totally quit the gym if you're okay with the OWS situation.

I have to say I do about 80% of my swim workouts in OW, but I do still find the pool benificial for interval training and I dont always like swimming in salt water, it messes with my sinuses.  It does sound like its in your best intrest to drop the membership,  maybe you could find a public pool to do interval training everynow and then for free.
