I was planning on a long run today, I filled up my fuel belt, grabbed some gels and off I went. I planned on running 11 miles, this would have been my longest run to date. Everything was going great, my legs felt good and it was 70 outside with no clouds. I reached the street I was supose to turn on and kept on going but when I got to the end of the street, I noticed a dead end sign and I thought d@mn, I turned on the wrong road. It took me an extra 4.8 miles out of the way. I ran out of water and had to stop and fill back up at a strangers house so I wouldn't pass out on the last 5 miles. The last couple of miles were aweful, I can't even imagine going a full 26.2

Just thought I would share my wrong turn today, I don't think I'll make this mistake again

15.8 GO ME!!

Every now and then I will drop my cell phone on accident.

I wish my accidents had health benefits like yours do.

This was a good accident, I have my share of bad ones to. Just 4 monthe ago I dropped A big a$$ table on my big toe and broke it. This just happened to be a good one but the bad out # the good by far!

Nice going. Makes for a good story ... and the kindness of strangers has saved me many a time.

I got lost during a half-marathon, to the tune of an extra 6 miles or so.

I also got lost during a marathon, but that cost me less than a mile. Still, it was near the end, and ANY extra yardage at that point is terrible.

I might take it easy for the next week or so.  You weren't trained for 16 miles and you might need some recovery time.  Glad you made it!

x2

I can just see maybe an ITB or PF issue creeping in within the next couple of days. Pay VERY close attention to your body right now.

EDIT: PS, good job!

+1

Building slowly is obviously preferred.  Definitely get some extra "recovery" in for the rest of the week and keep your next few runs "easy."

Don't worry about how you will feel running 26.2 based on your first 16mi run; especially given you jumped from 11 miles.  As your training progresses, hopefully in a more measured build, those 16 mile runs will become much easier.

Good luck with your training.

If you look at the Garmin link in my signature, you can see that I did the samething back on Nov 12th. Mine was also accidently with the added pressure of having to pick up my son from pre K on time. My very next run I injuried myself & have not been the same since. I can no longer train on tarmac because of meniscus inflamation in my left knee. I'm slowly building my miles back up on trails, tracks, & treadmills after I had to take 6 weeks off from running. I'm 43, so I'm sure age played a factor as well. Good luck & be careful.

Thats hilarious... good job, but yeah.. take it easy if anything hurts!

I have never run extra "on accident" but I have set out for what should have been a 10mi run, but felt so good at mile 5 that I kept running instead of turning around. Thereby turning a 10 miler into a 16 miler... and yeah, felt great through 10, then usually wanted to die by the time I made it home.

Ive learned from those lessons... stick to my planned mileage!

O once got lost in farm country backroads in PA and turned a 12 mile run into a 22 mile slog through the rain!

When I first started riding when I lived in Germany I would specifically go "This turn looks good."  Then the next one, and the next one and before you knew it I was lost - on purpose ........

Since I lived near the airport I'd just look up and see which way the planes were going and try to make my way back using them.  I only had to ask for directions once.  Some of the best rides I'd ever had!

I still try to go out and get lost occasionally, but since I know my area really well it is harder and harder to do.

Congrats on the great run!  Rest and recover and go out for more!

During a training run for my first marathon.  I was running with T-n-T and somehow missed a very well marked turn.  I mean, there was a big sign and chalk on the ground that said "Turn Here"...well I am running and running and all of the sudden I realize that I am in a really bad area of San Francisco and that I see no other runners.  I doubled back as fast as I could.  I ended up going 18 miles on a 16 mile training run...

I will still take turns in unfamiliar neighborhoods just to see more of it, both biking and running. I have gotten turned badly around only once, and that was pre-Garmin.

I do this on the bike all of the time - kind of like Rick was talking about.  I did it way more when I lived in a farm house that was out of town away and I didn't know all of the county roads very well.  I would load up as much water as I could and take off.  Every time I passed a decent convenience store I would get more water if I was running low.  Nice long rides and you get to see a bunch of scenery.

I have never done it running, though.  Mostly because I don't ever run far enought to be able to get lost.

Yeah, it is more fun (And a bit safer) to do this on a bike.  My last big ride of last year, I just set out east.  Got to the top of the neighborhoods and thought, why not, I'll try to ride up to the ski resort.  It is only 8 miles  up the canyon.   1 hour later I discovered that 8 miles seems like a lot more at 9% grade and about 3500 feet of elevation gain!  It was still one of my most "epic" rides to date.  Ended up with a 45 miles and 5000+ climbed for the day after just setting out for a fun ride.

On a bike ride last summer I had a blowout so bad that I had to hitch a ride to the nearest shop to get a new tire, which was back from where I was coming from. The ride was supposed to be 50 miles, ended up being 60. I was happy for the extra mileage!

I kind of date my current endurance training regimen from when I set out along the LA River for what I thought was going to be a two-mile run (which was as long as I was ever running at that point). I reached a bridge on what I thought was an east-west street that I subsequently found was north-south. My two miler turned into what I've since determined was a 3.3 miler as I tried to find my way to any sort of recognizable landmark. Doesn't sound like a lot now in terms of mileage, but jumping up in distance by 65% in one run was a big deal at that point...proved to me I was farther along than I imagined I was.

i went out for a nice, easy 3-mile run during a weekend at a church retreat. We were staying in this somewhat wooded area, but it still had paved roads - and it was BEAUTIFUL! one of my roommates wanted me to wake her up when i got back so she could jump in the shower and get ready for our first meeting. well...i took a wrong turn and got totally lost, which ended up in an extra 3 miles (which i was running HARD at this point due to my time constraint and waiting roommate!)

i got back late, due to obvious reasons, and my roommate was kinda like, "why did you wake me up?" i told her the whole story, and we laughed our heads off...(we made it to the meeting JUST in time.)

I have a wrong turn incident Ill never forget. I was doing a hilly 28 mile group ride. The was only my second time doing it. I kinda new the roads so I didnt worry too much about falling behind. I dont remember if I had my cue sheet. I was following the arrows on the ground. Little did I know, there were arrows from a century I believe that had nothing to do with this ride. After making a wrong turn, I was chased by 2 dogs. When I finally figured out where I was, I was 8 miles out of the way on a busy 2 lane road. I contemplated stopping and calling my wife, but I dredged on. In the end I did 36 miles, my longest ride ever. My legs were so sore
