Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Santa Rosa Friday night, as I was doing this race with madkat (and friends) Actually have wanted to do it for a while but it never worked out into my schedule. Hung out with them and watched Robot Chicken which was funny but somewhat disturbing.

Slept really well, until I got woken up at 5:30. I think I resembled a zombie or something for quite some time and my brain was NOT working. I couldn't find my fleece headband, until it was pointed out that it was around my neck. That's how with it I was. Ate a little food.
Event warmup:

Drove to event (an hour) parked, all discussed just staying in the nice warm car, but finally we sucked it up and got out. Walked up big a** hill, registered, stood around feeling cold, walked DOWN the hill, sat in the car, repeat discussion, walk UP hill again and get ready to run.

Oh and standing in ultra-long porta potty line.

Comments:

It turned out to be a beautiful morning, just really perfect although a little too cold to begin with, but I warmed up pretty soon. I was hoping for a PR (wishful thinking) but knew as soon as I saw the course that was NOT going to be in the cards.

Ran down the big a** hill, then up, then down, then up then down, then turned around and did it in reverse. Really, really NICE scenery through the Napa valley vineyards and also it's out of the way so just nice.

Strategy was to run down the hills and walk the uphills which I pretty much followed, although I started running for 10 steps at a time and repeating which made the 2nd half (I think) faster than the first. I need to remember to do that more often as I slack off a bit in races and I need to work on that.

Ran a few steps up the last big a** hill, but then just walked fast (really, I was going as fast as I could) the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a really good time for me, especially considering the fact that I didn't really train enough plus the lo-cal diet thing I'm doing right now.

I'm REALLY happy with my time.
Post race
Warm down:

Drove back to madkat's place, changed and went to breakfast. ummm... lunch. Lusted after bacon cheeseburgers that everyone else was having but stayed on diet and had tea instead.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ha. Wouldn't you like to know?

Event comments:

Nicely organized small run. Very enjoyable.

Nice job getting out there and getting it done

The clock (Or Chip Time) is certainly not the only measure of success in a race. On a moderately difficult course it quickly becomes a real test of mental resolve to push through the hills and pick it up on the downhills. Sounds to me like you had a very nice run over the course. (I am glad your happy with the results)

Best of all, you got to hang out with another one of the cool kids and share a meal. I have figured out that hanging out with folks at the race really adds a whole new level of enjoyment.

Enjoy your recovery

Congrads on an excellent race.  It seems like you had a nice boost in speed from your last couple of weeks.  You should be proud of the race--especially since you have been focusing on the weight loss (and very successful).

Cheers

Hi Shellee.  Congrats on your race.  That's a fun one.  Gotta love the hills!  Hope you did some winetasting afterward.
