Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

ate pb & toast, elite, a little coffee
Event warmup:

walk 1+ mile to start line, we parked too far away, but got to see the Kenyans blow by us.
Run
  • 1h 08m 34s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

This race is just soooo crowded. I was not out for a PR, just lots of PD (people dodging). It's fun. The bridge is beautiful, and the views are nice. Running through downtown feels like the running of the bulls. Lots of bells and people yelling and everyone is shoulder to shoulder, but it is exciting.
What would you do differently?:

not park so far away and try to get more towards the front, not that it would really have helped, it's just so crowded.
Post race
Warm down:

stretch, eat an orange, drink water, go to a bar and drink beer and eat a club sandwich waiting on the bridge to re-open so our ride could come get us.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

15,000 people in the way. :)

Event comments:

Why don't the walkers stay to the right? They must not be able to read the big signs that say "walkers - right runners - left."

Woo hoo!  Girl, you are just doing a fantastic job out of all of this ... knocking out a 10k through people dodging.

My mental picture of Charleston's version of 'running with the bulls'  is a bunch of well dressed people running through the street with cocktails.

Hope you enjoyed the City as much as you did the race.

Great job out there, Gygy!  Sounds like a really nice experience (minus the people dodging).  I'm sure it was especially nice that your hubby was there with you

I followed the Kenyans.....

they were about 30 mins ahead of me but I followed them

BTW good job and nice race gygyhawk!!

EDIT:

I noticed you said something about parking. I said this to someone else but don't remember who on here so instead of looking for it and linking I'll just type away.

Me and my wife parked right beside the event center (where you go for packet pickup) in the parking garage right next to it. We got there at 5:00am. Walked about 200 ft to the buses and they took us to the start line where. From where the buses dropped us off in Mt. Pleasant we had about another 1/2 mi walk to the actual start line.

Me and her chilled out beside the BP station right there and ended up starting between it and the clock tower. We were pretty close to the front of red bib starters. If we would have known that we'd be dodging walkers from the very beginning ( on the left side I might add ) we would have moved up even closer to the front where the back of the green bibs started.

Anyway, when we were done we went through the finish to the end of the street, turned the corner, walked 5 mins to our vehicle and were off. We actually saw walkers on bridge as we driving back toward the interstate and the bridge was still packed full of people. Amazing.

Just some food for thought for next year.

You rocked this run Gy...I was impressed with your performance and watchin your skillz as you bobbed - n - weaved the crowds as we made our way through the down-town area was exciting.  As you started to pull away from me I was like.."damn she kicked in the afterburners!" ....I was on fumes at that point...nice run and it was great running it with you!!

Love

Hubby

That is such a fun race!  Great job!  I haven't done the run since they moved it to the new bridge.  Maybe we can round up the whole QCTC crowd next year for a road trip!
