3Sports Duathlon (Short Course) - Duathlon

Set-Up Events

Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 13m 34s
Overall Rank = 27/32 F
Age Group = 35-39 F
Age Group Rank = 6/7
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, ate some breakfast (Mojo + diet Pepsi), read some BT, loaded up the car, and then headed out...thought it would take me 20-30 minutes, but it turned out to only take 10-15 (even driving like a granny with my bike on the back)...
Event warmup:

Ran into Jen (before the diet Pepsi kicked in - she yelled "Morning Sunshine" and I was confused :)), managed to flat my tire while I was pumping it up, paced, checked my tires, paced, checked my tires, and that's about it.
Run
  • 25m 44s
  • 2.85 miles
  • 09m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Run1 felt pretty good, except for not being ready for the hills - I should start training hills a little more. Speed good, but not too aggressive - which was what I was aiming for.
What would you do differently?:

Train more hills. That's about it. Run1 was good.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Took a gel, drank some Nuun, changed shoes/helmet on, and then off to the ride.
What would you do differently?:

I'm OK with T1 - could maybe move a little faster, but I'm not disappointed.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 9s
  • 18 miles
  • 14.18 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm pretty sure that bike riding messes with my head - especially the hills. The over-the-interstate hill just really sucked, headwind + long...On the first lap, the hill made me breathe hard. On the second lap, the hill made me swear. On the third lap, the hill made me sing (Kanye - Stronger...a remix version...That-tha-tha-that that don't kill me...will only make me stronger...). On the fourth lap, I gave it up for Iowa (In heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here...) Mind you, all of this was happening OUT LOUD. Belting it out. Good thing there was noone around me.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Train more hills. More TITS more often. More time on the road with Baby. More more more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Not my best T2 - I came to a complete stop to get off the bike and kind of wandered into the Tzone. Switch shoes, switch hat/helmet, grabbed another gel, swigged some Nuun. Waddled out of the Tzone.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta get the groove on in T2...run it into the zone, run it out of the zone. MORE BRICKS. More more more.
Run
  • 29m 23s
  • 2.85 miles
  • 10m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Run2 sucked. I had to waddle some of the hills - my lack of bricks really showed. And then at the turnaround, the sky opened up....thunder, lightning, and pouring rain. Why does every race I do involve rain? Is it me?
What would you do differently?:

MORE BRICKS. MORE BRICKS. MORE BRICKS.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, since it was pouring. Loaded up the gear, got some grub, and drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I shouldn't be so hard on myself - it's early season and I've been run-focused through the offseason...but it's pretty clear that I need more TITS and BRICKS to get ready for tri-season. (Along with more swimming, more biking, and more running.) :)

Event comments:

I just want to give a shout-out to Jen (Artemis)! She was scheduled to race, but couldn't - so she was the best volunteer! Thanks Jen! I was happy to see you at the Run2 turnaround. :)

Great job on the race, Sunshine!  I was glad I got to chat with you during both of the runs.  The hills on the bike were pretty tough, but you made it through.  And you are that much stronger.

Very nicely done.  It would be hard to do a du with all the run focus you've had in training  Great job hanging in there in tough weather conditions!

Congrats, Kristen! The run-bike thing is really hard for me. I dig the bike-run much better. Way to tough it through the hills and in the rain...again! Imagine how fast you will be in dry conditions!

Way to go, Sunshine! (So just how sure are you that no one heard you singing? 'Cause I think it would be really funny if, during your next race, someone said, "Hm, I recognize you. You were the one singing as you went up that hill....)

Congratulations on getting through those hills. Sounds like it was a tough course, but you DID IT!

Great job out there, Kristen!  Sounds like a very challenging course and I loved your description of how you got through those hills on the bike.  Whatever it takes, Sunshine, whatever it takes

Great job!  You may feel you were waddling, but that's a decent run time for 2nd time around I think.  BRICKS are needed but SO hard to suck it up for.

Congratulations on the early season duathlon.  That's great that you're out racing in early Spring.  You'll have a nice jump on the rest of us who are still in the basement on our trainers.  .
