Set-Up, Inc
65F / 18C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 31m 2s
Overall Rank = 66/371
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 14/73
Pre-race routine:

Late start so we slept in. The romper room was fun.
Event warmup:

Stood in the rain. Stood in the covered area. Set up transition as best I could. Did a one mile warm up run.
Swim
  • 12m 51s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lined up at the front and to the inside. Wished BITM and Slake good luck and then we were off. Had a good break and had some clear water pretty quickly. Saw a couple of guys to my left. Tried one set of feet, nope too slow. Tried another set, bingo. Stayed with this guy the whole time. Just before the first turn there was traffic. This guy was swimming straight and picking a good line so I was just hanging on for the ride. On the way into the finish I went by him. Popped my head out of the water and saw 3558 getting out in front of me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I think this part of the race went really well. Swam hard, had a good draft, didn't go off course.
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

Suit got stock on both feet and on the timing chip so I had to sit down to yank it off. Of course got some of those crazy cramps in my calves. That always annoys me. Shouldn't happen.
17/73 AG
80/371 OA
What would you do differently?:

Get the suit off faster. This spring during OWS practice I will work on getting the wetsuit off as fast as possible every time I get out of the water.
Bike
  • 52m 27s
  • 18 miles
  • 20.59 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't know where my legs were during the bike. Had a bit of trouble with mud in my cleats but wasn't as bad of a time as others seemed to be having. Out of transition my breathing was going nuts and my legs were still uncramping themselves from the wetsuit stuff. I settled down once out of the park, but lost a few places along the way. I really didn't seem like I was generating the power that I thought I should have been. Most of the bike I didn't see anyone. Just a few guys here and there. I felt like I was out there by myself on a cool and rainy day in farm country just riding alone.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pedals harder. A lot harder. It was only my 4th or 5th time on the new bike so I'm sure that didn't help, but I think I should have been significantly faster than that.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

This was smooth. Despite the fact that TA was looking more and more like Woodstock (minus the hippies, rock and roll, drugs, and sex of course).

5/73 AG
35/371 OA

What would you do differently?:

Nothing that I cant think of. This went off without a hitch. I was right up there with the fastest times in my AG.

Run
  • 22m 10s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok run. The hill out of transition kicked my a$$ pretty good. I never hear myself breathing when I run, and I was sucking wind. Recovered from that and started going to work. Passed a couple of guys and got passed by a couple of guys mostly from the previous age group that started before me.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder. I had too much gas in the tank at the end. I am capable of running at least 30 seconds per mile faster at this point in time.
Post race
Warm down:

Watched the finish. Saw everyone else come in during the pouring rain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain, new bike. I did ok. Not great, not bad. Wish the bike and run were a bit faster.

Event comments:

Setup always puts on a good show, except for the announcer, he sucked.

Nice Work, Dck. You looked solid on the run.  We get to race together next year....  since you know you'll be out of the water before me, you'll spend the rest of the race wondering if the next guy to pass you is me.

Nice race! Looks like a good start to the season. Once you get used to the bike and get in some more bricks, I bet you'll be even faster.

It won't be so easy getting on the podium once you race with the real men, 'poster boy'. Especially if you keep your swim 'workouts' at 1200 yards a piece.

Real men?  I assume that excludes you, Slake and BITM.

Swimming is my kryptonite.  Why is that so hard for everyone to understand?

Yeah - I think you just need to shake some rust off... Most of your training has been of the Timberman variety, and this race was just a C race or even better stated, a catered speedwork session. Remember the big goals..

And you are awesomely fast. Next year 3558 better watch out.

Nice job, Dck - yay for the Romper Room

The announcer p*ssed me off too, and I was only at the race site for like 15 minutes. He was annoying me the previous day as well, though seemed extra annoying on Sunday morning. Maybe because of the weather...

Did you get your protein shake from him before the race?

No, but I hear you did.

Nice race dck. Your training has really been geared towards the longer stuff and this was only a C race and yet you still had good times across the board. The swim was definitely long too.

Keep up the consistent training and your races will be there.

Nice race Dave... especially coming off half-mary training, great work in this sprint under crappy conditions.  I did my part to make T2 more like Woodstock by peeing in it, btw.

Great race report man, I like the woodstock comment.  I'm with you on the "too much gas in the tank" at end.  Just push it hard the whole way in a sprint... I guess that is why it is called a sprint, not a pacer.

Nice race!!! Sounds like it was a tough day for a lot of people, but it's always a blast racing w/ so many friends! Congrats on a solid race to start the season. Did you feel the urge to put donuts in T2?

Great way to kick off the season. Strong race, even in crappy weather and for a new bike. If the transition run is a little on the longer side, don't hesitate to take off your wetsuit before getting to your TA spot. They seem to be easier to pull off right out of the water.

Nice job; I can't wait to see how the rest of the season goes for ya!
