Tri Minnesota Racing Series
55F / 13C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 53m 29s
Overall Rank = 72/143
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 13/17
Pre-race routine:

Got up and had some coffee and 2 pieces of peanut butter toast. Found out later said peanut butter toast was moldy. Mmmmmm M! Got to site early and took bike out for a spin. Gears were a little funky and rear break was extremely sqeaky. Must have goy some silicone on it when cleaning and regreasing the chain last night. Waited around and talked to fellow BT'ers Patti and Todd. Never seems like enough time to chat. Watched the winds pick up more and more as we waited for the start
Event warmup:

Short ride and then into the lake. After coaxing my balls back down from my throat I just tried to do dome swimming to warm-up. This was the coldest water I have ever swam in.
Swim
  • 08m 9s
  • 402 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

I really hope this course was measured wrong. Pretty dissapointed in this time. It did end up coming in the top 3rd for age group so I'm assuming it was longer than 1/4 mile. Took a few pretty good shots to the body and head.
What would you do differently?:

Probably sited to often. Semmed like I was popping up every 5 strokes or so. Need to get use to not slowing down when somone is crawling all over me again also
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

I knew this would be a slow T1 because I wanted to get dried off before the bike. I was freezing and wanted a chance at warming up. What I didn't realize is that I wouldn't be able to get out of my suit. I have a new QR suit that you pull the zipper up and it releases. Problem is it didn't want to release. Felt like I wasted a lot of tiome but finally got it. Actually thought I spent a lot more time in T1 than I really did.
What would you do differently?:

Practice with new suit. Worked fine when dry.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 21s
  • 19.8 miles
  • 18.18 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a brutal ride. Wind was howling by race start. Hills would be classified as rolling, problem is they were right into a heavy wind. I'm guessing 20 m.p.h. sustained the whole ride. I decided I was going to ride as hard as I could without killing myself. Very cold ride. About 5 miles was right into the wind, 10 miles of very heavy crosswinds which I thought were the most draining, and 5 of the most delightfull tailwind miles ever. Legs were pretty fried by then, but looking down and seeing 31.2 mph on the flats is a blast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I could have went a little harder but the conditions were pretty bad for biking.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Went fine. Nothing much to say. Put my socks on in T1 to try and keep feet warm-didn't work.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 35m 30s
  • 4.2 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a great run for me. Last year I was averaging 9:00's at best in my tri runs. This was quite a bit faster after a tough bike. Happy with the run. I'm just always amazed at how many people are so much quicker than I am. Feet were wooden blocks for first mile of run. I couldn't figure out if they were frozen or were numb from hitting front of shoe. After 1 mile righty had some feeling in it. After 2 miles most feeling had fully returned. Crazy stuff this triathlon business in May.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with Kelly and talked to some people I had seen at the race. Kids were at home alone so couldn't stick around too long.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pretty worn down from IM training. Probably still a little residual effects from my half marathon last weekend. I'm going into this season with only one race in mind. IMMOO. I'm looking at all these races as more enjoyable training days, but nothing top push so hard to risk injury over.

Event comments:

Heavy wind and cold make it tough to fully enjoy a race. Other than about a 2 mile stretch of road the course was really good. Lots of friendly volunteers and a very pretty run.

A few edits to my race report.  I was 39th overall in the swim. Not 21st.  For the end results I actually finished smack dab in the middle of the pack.  71 finished before and 71 finished after.  You know what that means?  Nothing, just a little fun fact.

I thought about you swimming this morning as I saw the morning temperature. I was glad to be inside. You had an great race. 8:30 miles at the end of all that wind...you were cruising!! Congratulations on being one of the first ones to enter the water on a day like today. Yikes!

Toe covers are a wonderful invention for cool morning races. You should try 'em sometime.

Sounds like brutal conditions!  Can't imagine a floating start.  I would have had hypothermia by the time the race started...

Bryan, your running's getting faster every race!

Congrats on having the GUTS to do a May race...
