Another issue that I told some people but didn't address earlier is that they were incomplete with awards. I watched the 10-15 year-olds and I believe none received awards. And some other AGs were not complete with awards.

The 10-15 year-olds are the future of the sport? Why would they not have awards? It just doesn't make sense.

They did tell me that my award would be mailed. It isn't a big deal to me, do I really need a piece of glass? But, it's another example of poor customer service.

Last year at Kinetic Half the race course was broken down while athletes were still on the course.

Can you e-mail Setup? You know, only constant complaining makes a difference. We are the reason they are in business.

plan on it!

I just sent Setup and email. The least they could do is send an email and let people know what the delay is all about. The days leading up to the event I think I got at least 5 emails about this, that or the other thing.

I definitely think they need to either close the course or keep the aid stations open, I let them know that as well.

edit - i will send an e-mail as well, about the aid stations. thanks for the e-mail addy.

I am going to as well. It is absolutely ridiculous that there were no aid stations for you on the run, that really pisssses me off.

This is completely unacceptable. They must work it out with the organizers/volunteers next year. I just e-mailed them about this as well. I think they are getting an ear full from me today. Will I be banned from the race next year????

Schaller will, Schalller can still race

Results are up... But the splits are suspect.

14 girls and 31 guys had exactly 1:00 for T1. Sounds like the extra time to get the results were because they had to reconstruct T1 and our bike splits. So who knows what the real splits are for the bike.

I looked at the data and agree .. I think some chips didn't pickup coming out of T1, so they arbitrarily assigned them a T1 of 1:00 so dan, ally and shelly's bike splits would be faster than what they have, (or slower if they had some supa dupa faster T1 (sub 1 min) ) .. mid post update..

I figured it out with MIchelle, they didn't turn on the mat between T1 and Bike.. if you look at the Bib/Swim times of the people with 1 minute you can actually pin point when the mat was turned on.

Another thing that is stupid is they didn't pull out the Overall winners, so orton and dan are in the AG.. so it has to be adjusted to remove those fasties..

No the error was with them turning the timing mat on between t1 and the bike.. the first 40/50 people out of T1 have 1:00 splits.. all other timing is accurate.. except for the people who didn't do 3 laps but didn't get DQed..  maybe you should have swum w/ the wetsuit for the extra speed, oh yeah and the giant tri top

I have to admit my disappointment in the race relative to the setup and overall execution compared to last year as well as other races. First, I remind myself that the race is for charity and that alot goes into putting together this event.  It is one that I will continue to race because it is in my backyard but will pass along my suggestions for making it better. Here are some of my thoughts:

  • Bring in some extra port of potties in for race. It will help cut down on folks peeing in the pool.  Thanks to all those 471 folks ahead of me for warming it up.
  • Agree with Shelly on awards - this is no excuse not to have hardware for folks that deserve it regardless of age.  I also suggest to give them out to everyone in the 40+ crowd just for finishing.  They can give out stickers like they did in school when you stayed within the lines for coloring.
  • Ran out of water at 1/2 way point late in the race - not good. Ask some of the neighbors who are on the trail to stand outside with a hose pipe if it happens again.
  • Keep looking for those banannas - they have to be around somewhere.
  • Have a festival afterwards so everyone can enjoy the jubilation of finishing or just stop by Dan's house again.
  • Have a puke station available at the top of Baron Cameron and Reston Pkwy so we don't gross out the volunteers as we finish the hill on the 3rd loop.

Finally, Doug Bushee, of Core Foundation, who started the event would surely want to know everyone's comments so don't hesitate to send in those emails or volunteer with setting it up for next year.

Nice one Steve! BTW, I received e-mail from SETUP, stating that they forwarded my e-mail to Reston Sprint race director.

As an update, got the same email from setup saying they were forwarding to race director. I then got a one line response from race director saying "Thank you for your feedback."

I then got email from Doug Bushee today explaining certain things and promising improvements next year and the steps they were taking to rectify the problems.

I went to HS with Doug and he is a good guy. I think he will do his best to make the changes needed.

Do you mind sharing what Doug said? I only got "thanks for your feedback" e-mail.

Here is what he said...

Great feedback. We will definitely be making some changes in preparation for next year.

Here is what I know so far:

We ran out of water for our later runners (our run marshalls gave away their water bottles to the last few runners). This will be fixed next year in two ways. First, we'll open the waterstation at North Hills pool and second double the water supply at the interseting aid station. (We did post a race cutoff time on all of our pre race material, but did not enforce it to allow them to complete the race).
We had a great number of athletes walk near the mats with their chips on and that confused results. It took time to identif and clean up. Setup knows the late postings are unacceptable to us and will make sure we have accurate race day postings next year. Our team also needs to do a better job keeping the mats clear.

Finally, the food will be better next year. We're constantly trying to balance the cost of the event with the mission of the event. We want a great race, but we also are trying to help those in our community that are without homes or food.

You've got a clear channel to the top and I really appreciate the fact you took the time to let us know how we can make this a better race for the athletes and for Reston.

Doug

interesting but where was the race cut off?  i was all over the setupevents page and it doesn't say it on there.  i've seen on some of their other races where it says it on the page.  i guess i'll add another e-mail to say that if there is a race cut off, they should really make sure it is clear and visible on the page.  i didn't know until someone posted on here that there was even another website, maybe it was just on that site?  if so, it should be on both sites, because some of us didn't even know there were two...
