Sunny
Total Time = 1h 08m 18s
Overall Rank = 115/302
Age Group = W40-49
Age Group Rank = 9/50
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 - perhaps this was too early. Had a peanut butter on toast - difficult because I am not usually hungry at that hour. Got dressed, double checked my bag. Bike was on car the night before. Drove to the event and parked relatively close though could have parked right on site because it was so early. Parking place in the university (even though cost $4) made it easy to leave at the end.
Event warmup:

Walked around on deck, stretching. Not until I was lining up for my wave did people start using the dive tank to warm up, so I didn't. If you're doing this race next year, use the dive tank right away...
Swim
  • 11m 4s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

I could have swam faster - got caught up behind a few women who I assumed were faster than me. would have been difficult to pass.

After a 25 year break from real swimming, I did the best in this part of the race: 7/50. Shocking!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was thrilled!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

2:44 on my watch. It was as good as I was capable of doing. Some people did have their shoes clipped on their pedals and jumped on their bike. Others spent many more minutes double knotting their running shoes here. A real mixed bag. I just wanted to clip on successfully, and I did!

I arrived early (one of the first) and got a really good rack - easy to find after the swim, right by the run exit. This was a good idea as you ran over gravel and pavement where the volunteers were ensuring that they found & removed all of the broken glass. I was glad to be putting on my bike shoes and not having to encounter gravel & glass.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing today! Eventually learn to clip faster.
Bike
  • 38m 9s
  • 16 kms
  • 25.16 km/hr
Comments:

Thrilled with the bike portion. Perhaps I didn't pace myself!? Who knew, I've never done a bike race before!! I didn't drink at all on the bike and given the distance this was probably okay. Average cadence was nearly 90, based on what I saw when I looked at my monitor.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to drink on the bike. I could probably do it but I didn't want to fall off my bike!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

1 minute on my watch; A little trouble racking the bike; nothing major. Got everything off fairly quickly. No riding with feet on top of shoes or jumping off moving bike for me, yet. But again a real mixed bag of levels and I really didn't feel I suffered for this.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Run
  • 19m 6s
  • 3 kms
  • 06m 22s  min/km
Comments:

This was the hardest part for me. After 18 years of running experience! I gave it all on my bike and this was all I had left. I am happy with how I did. I pushed it at the end.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks to improve my running and the end of a triathlon.
Post race
Warm down:

Met my family! I had only seen them once on the course but they saw me and took pictures (will upload later). Went to post-race brunch at the house of a friend who also did the tri.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. I did as well as I could.

Event comments:

Awesome. good race, great volunteers. Caught up with some friends I haven't seen for a while. I smiled a lot, probably even during the swim. Had a great time!

They didn't time the transitions and my bike time on my watch is faster than what they timed me at. A couple of women in my age group, one who was 2nd last year, and another a friend of mine who had an excellent bike leg, didn't get their run times recorded. If they are able to figure something out my overall rank might drop. Oh well, I'm happy!
