Tri-series
23C / 73F
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 58m 52s
Overall Rank = 88/
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 16/
Pre-race routine:

I have been tapering for a couple of days and just resting and eating and drinking lots of water. On the day I ate half a banana and drank some water - I was too nervous to eat!
Event warmup:

Light jog and some laps in the bay to warm up the arms and check out the wetsuit.
Swim
  • 30m 38s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was scared when I saw how FAR it was! I was wondering if I could do it... Anyway - all went very very well - it wasn't a huge group of competitors and I started at the back of the group as my aim was to enjoy myself rather than come out of the water in the lead. I had a wonderful time - felt soooo comfortable in the water - apart from the jellyfish... The stroke correction that I had worked wonders! Fantastic swim for me!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

The tranisition times have not been allocated separately so not too sure how I went here - but it felt slow.
What would you do differently?:

PRACTICE
Bike
  • 1h 27m 48s
  • 40 kms
  • 27.33 km/hr
Comments:

I could have worked harder here - I just wasn't sure whether I would be able to run 10kms at all if I went too hard. I need to work on my cycling - it felt slow but after all it looks ok considering it is the longest ride I have ever had!
What would you do differently?:

More training
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again, not too sure of the time here - but I think I rode at about 30km/hr and the difference is this transition?
What would you do differently?:

PRACTICE
Run
  • 1h 00m 26s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 02s  min/km
Comments:

I found this really hard - I have to put a lot more training into longer distance runs. I really struggled at times - not breathing wise, just fatigue, heat, thirst and general aches and pains and cramps.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, eat more before the race and drink more on the bike!
Post race
Warm down:

I WAS ECSTATIC! to have finished this is something I never thought I would ever ever do - so I was pretty happy and just walked around smiling and drinking water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training and probably my own mental toughness

Event comments:

My goal was to complete this in under 3 hours and I DID IT! I wa slike the cat that swallowed the cream. And the best thing is I felt fine afterwards - 8 hours later and I am fine, some pain in the legs but nothing too harsh.

This is the most challenging thing I have ever put myself through physically (apart from child birth) and I am so happy at the results!
Today I am the king (queen) of my own little world and very happy with myself. I didn't have a support team at the race so it was very much a solitary thing for me and that was OK, I felt my dad sitting on my shoulder all the way (he died 13 yrs ago and was my best friend and greatest supporter in all things). He would be really proud of me!!!!

Well done M!!! I too was suprised how long the swim course was, I guess I've never seen such a distance marked out before! But the bay was beautiful, the weather perfect, all topped off by a great performance from you! Congrats on making it in under the 3 hour mark.

In that picture of yours, you pretty much sum up everything that I want to get out of doing a tri.  You love so incredibly happy - as well you should be.  Sounds like you executed your race exactly the way that you wanted to.  Your swim time is fantastic!!!  Even having to avoid the jellyfish too!

Do you give lessons?

Congratulations on such a great race.

Jeff

Congratulations on finishing your first oly tri.

All that pain in the run was worth it to have achieved such a huge goal. Most people wouldn't even attempt an olympic distance triathlon and you not only finished, by did it under 3 hours. Well done!!

Maryke,

Thanks for the race report.  Glad to hear your race went so well.  It sure makes all those painful hours of training worthwhile, doesn't it?  You should be very proud of yourself for all the hard work and discipline it took to train for and then complete that race.

Top Effort Maryke.

It's so good to be racing here in Australia at the moment. Well done on the swim too, its easily the most daunting part of any race. Keep up the hard work and we'll see you in Geelong at the Aust Champs in March???

I get to race tomorrow here in Canberra. ACT Champs tomorrow! Woooo.
