Pre-race routine:

Up at 7:00. Slept well, when don't I. Snuggled into Y while dunderhead got a cup coffee and a shower. Gotta pee but I can wait, too warm here next to Y. I love when the hotels double sheet the comforter. Had a little drink and some left over gyro bread and chicken, favorite race food. Let's face it anything but dry kibble is race food. Except for bananas can't stand them. It's a texture thing.

Finally got on the way. I will never get use to those elevators. They just feel weird. Well the concrete isn't too hot yet. Two block form the Hilton. Hey there's Boo. We get to walk to the race together. We get to share some grass. The green stuff. Head down to the Tavern on the Green. Wow the rest of the chicken dogs whom can't run in their underwear are there. The cranky pitbull is there. What a bitch (hehehe). Rest of the dogs are socialable. I finally get a quiet moment to take a dump. Ah....
Wow "Z" got balloons. We parade to the start. Oh great half way over the women see the porta potties and the whole thing falls apart. We get to the start and it is cool a little area we can relax fenced off and water pools. I got my own water dish with my names on it. Great which one is mine I can't spell ya know. Neither can he. I really don't want to get in the
dirty pool, stop telling me to get in. Oops there goes the pitbull again what a crank. Cool signs were made up for us with my number and name printed on it, so maybe now I can find my bowl. Man there are a lot people here. We get our chip. I'm ready let's get thing over with before I gotta pee again.
Event warmup:

We do a few little jogs not far. We start out of a short chute and merge with the regular runners. Neat I can actually a real race I'm welcome in. Cool. We line up I'm next to Boo. Dunderhead said he was going to push Steve into the barberry bushes when we start. He didn't. We get pushed back to the second row.

Comments:

Off we go. Now the start of the swim is one thing attach 14 humans to dogs that ready to sprint you get chaos too add a sharp right hand merge turn and it's worse. I start to run but the bottle neck puts me on top of Murphy and he is not in favor of that. He turns and goes pitbull on me. We are broken up with no troubles. We pull back to get a little room and merge without taking anyone out. It's a little tough since no one is looking down and every one is tired and ready to be done. We enter at 1.2 miles into the loop.

Man it's hot. Luckily we have some shade. We hang behind Boo and Z some. They both have really nice tail. Hey Murphy sorry about before. We get to run 1/4 mile or so. Janelle (his human) is running on the right side and he can't hear shit and just laughs now and then. Man it's hot. What the hell are we running for again. 3-mile marker we amscrod. He is looking hotter then I feel. He tells me I look good and run well. He looks exhausted and tells us about the jellyfish stinks. Ouch he should have more fur to protect himself.

We lose track of the boys and Murph runs ahead. I think he liked looking at the "GO Murphy" sign on her butt. Up comes the Med check stop of us. I'm glad to stop. Z is getting ready to go, Boo is already gone. We all have to stop and checked and rest 5 minutes.
Whoa 3 girls grab me. One is looking at my mouth. One is checking my feet. The third well what the hell is going on back there. I don't have a cold! Ge that thing out of that place. Exit only!

OK I told before I'm not going in the pool! I'm fine. The accelarade was good. We walk a little. hang in the shade. Dunderhead has Accelorade dumped on his front so he rinses with a cup of water. Good thinking. We get the 30 second count down and get up on the line. Oh look mister cranky at least he is behind us. The official tells to go and we wait, he tells again. It's like "OK" we don't want to cut off a runner. Give a break we can see. We get out there safely. We missed Anthony going by.

Boy that a long looking hill. We are running easy, more of a jog. We did get to the top of the hill. Hey why is that pool closed? We could have swum in that. Look more station. There is Y and Meghan cheering us on. Hey don't make me run through the hose I hate that. Ok not far to go. Y comes an gives me a pat on the head. That's enough to get me home. oops there goes Happy. Oh well why are we running again?

Hi Anthony! Sure we can run with you a little. He is looking rough and don't mean roof as in dog talk. We walk in the shade some and start up again. He is doing OK and we go ahead some. It;s up to Cheery hill. What has been great is all the wrong names I'm called. Fido, Pooch, doggy, spot, canine and such. The name is right on Dunderhead's chest. Samantha. duh!

We hit the chute and there is cheering all over. It was outrageous. They want the dogs to go first but I'm enjoying the cheering. There is Y and Meghan in the VIP grandstand. Cool maybe I'll get a sandwich. We cross the mats and can stop running. We get Finishing metals, towels, hat and t-shirts. A woman grabs the leash and off I'm swept. Why are we running the kibble comes for the store.

What would you do differently?:

Pick a cooler day. Not have the thing at the back end done again. Walk with Anthony more he needed a friend. Oops he did just finish behind us. Congrates.
Post race
Warm down:

Well the sweet lady converge on me with 3 others. Again people are trying to dump water on me. My paws are checked, mouth looked at and then the exit only thing. Would you stop that! I'm fine 105.5. Perfect for a dog. Heart rate is good. Hey we took it easy. It was hot duh!

We try and get out by the fence guy. No way he says. We head up around with Bean and Murphy. The doggy wind down area is way at the other end. There Z, Duke, Boo and the rest. Hi guys. Again with the pool thing. Do you think we enjoy wet dog smell and certainly I won't want to ride 6 hours with me. Y brings us a sandwich. Hummm roast beef. I have some kibble too. I'm hungry I really haven't eaten a lot this weekend. We spent an hour waiting for awards. Everyone sits and talks and wait for Zulu to come in. He ended up walking most of it. Big boys like him don;t take the heat well. We all cheer when he shows up. I lay around with Happy He's 10 y/o. It's like the senior section while the kids recover and romp around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe the heat and pace we set at the underwear run. Would have loved to get ahead on the swim I know we could of.

Event comments:

We had fun. We met great pet owners and hope to see Boo's parent this summer at Skinny man. They are bringing Boo. Vincent and Harvey were great. Boo awarded his award to Duke the service dog at Walter Reed Hosp for the service guys rehabbing. I hope we can do this again next year. Being the first one there were a few to iron out.

Maybe next year I can teach Y to swim and she can do it too. Oh yeah we need a another dog.
Thanks for all the cheers and encouragement in my training. I had fun. There hasn't been there much active on my logs and will probably leave my log unless we get another race. There is a chance we may try to get a Doggy Du at a local tri. Thanks!

Sam, great race and excellent RR!!  I'm glad us humans don't have to endure mid-race check-ups.  I'm not a fan of exit-only temperature checks either.  Wink

Sounds like you had a good time!   WTG!!  Cool

You are definitely the best-writing doggy athlete I know. SUPER JOB on the race and humoring dunderhead even though he's kind of slow and a blockhead. Glad he managed to at least stumble after you. So sorry you didn't get to do the swim, I know you would have kicked tail. You kicked tail anyway, though, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Congratulations on a great race, Samantha. You really did well, especially considering you had to drag your pet, Dunderhead,  all the way around the park. You are a very pretty dog with a beautiful coat.

I'm glad I got to see you twice on the run. You were a great pick me up and helped me get through the run. I didn't think I looked that "rough" until I saw the race photos. I'm surprised that you didn't start barking like Lassie does when Timmy falls down the well when you saw how bad I looked.

Great job and I hope you get to swim in a race someday.

Anthony
