I did a whole practice this morning as this will be my first tri ever and I wanted to be prepared for the experience.  I swam about one mile north of the official course...like it was said, even way out in the water it is only 4 or 5 ft. deep.  While swimming you cannot see past your elbow during your stroke.  Pretty bad visibility, but not overly salty.

I did the complete bike course from what I could tell.  I don't think I found the appropriate turn-around spot on Wilcox Rd. but the rest of the course is totally flat.  I rode the centerline over the metal-grated section of the bridge, but I doubt we will get to do that next weekend (The center is concrete and metal not just grating).

Run will be under the oppressive hot sun.  Have fun.

In case any of you have not received your e-mail from the coordinators over at setupevents.com...the race is still on for Sunday.  Saturday is in question with the 30-40 mph winds projected and the rain.  It looks like there will be no trailing affects on Sunday.

If I was a betting man, I'd say you are going to be wetsuit legal because of the cool rain that will be coming in from upstream.

That's what I'm praying for.

Not sure how cool it will be, so I'm not sure if I want to use a wetsuit or not.  I might make that decision day of.

So here's my question about Sunday: even if it hits Saturday afternoon, isn't it possible that we won't be able to race on Sunday morning?  What if there are trees down in the area?  Somehow I don't think it will be a priority for cleaning up to get the race site ready.  I don't know.  I'm not excited about the situation and I'm getting more and more apprehensive about it.

With the looks of it we should be fine on Sun morning. I don't think that there will be to many trees down here in Williamsburg. The only place that might give us a problem is Rt 5. Not looking forward to vol on the bike course Sat. That could get ugly.

I don't think we have any trees left to fall after Isabelle in 2003.  I guess we'll see.

As long as we're in worry-wort mode...what if the power's out?

(OK, I'm not a complete nut - I lost power for 10 days post-Isabel...and I'm still a little gunshy about it.)

We don't need power-we will be generating our own Plus I think this storm is moving fast enough that Sun will be good.

Plus, there isn't anything any of us can do regarding the storm, power outages, etc. My plan is to be ready to race no matter what the conditions. And I'm just thankful we're racing on Sunday and not on Saturday, it's a total mess for those doing the HIM.

I'm concerned about my ability to GET to Williamsburg on Sunday morning.  Every other time I've driven down in a tropical storm (don't ask...I apparently attract them or something), it's been a nightmare.  There are always a bunch of trees down around 5.

Looks like they're giving us another hour...that makes me feel a little better. Sorry for the nerves. It's my first Oly -- plus my first race after a tropical storm.

9/5/08 - Patriots Half - Cancelled due to Hurricane Hanna

We deeply regret to announce that the Patriots Half scheduled for Saturday morning at 7AM has been cancelled due to Hurricane Hanna. All athletes currently registered for this event will receive a 50% credit for the 2008 Patriots Half. The Patriots Sprint and International will go on as scheduled for Sunday exactly one hour later. Sprint starts at 8AM, International Starts at 9AM. This just gives us an extra hour of daylight to take care of any hazards on the course.

That's making me tempted to just drive down Sunday, too.

Wow...that sucks for everyone, including a few I know who were doing this as their first HIM. I guess you have to focus on safety first, there are always other chances to race. And although it makes sense to push back our start, I hate late starts. I'd much rather be in the water at 7:30 then 9 but oh well....nothing we can do.

As for travel, I'll still head down early tomorrow and I'll hope to get to town before it gets TOO nasty. Then I'll be spending the day in my hotel watching it rain ;-)

Good luck and safe travels, guys. Let's have a great race on Sunday!

So, the swim is canceled. Anyone know if they are going to make it a du or just keep the bike and run the same as planned? Anyone know if there are any other Oly's coming up?

it's gotta be some sort of du.  they can't have a mass start on the bike, that would be pretty chaotic...need something to spread things out first.

It's probably going to be a du.  Too crazy to have it start on the bike.

9/5/08 - Patriots Sprint and International - Moved Back 1 Hour
The Sprint will start at 8AM, the International will start at 9AM.
There will be no swim due to poor water quality (debris, runoff, etc)
There will be no packet pick up on Saturday, there will be packet pick up from 6AM to 8AM on race morning.
There will be no refunds or credits given for Sundays event.

I'm glad they posted the times for packet pickup.  I was wondering about that.

I'm thinking I'm out as well...I've been training all year to complete an Oly and a du is just not the same thing. So, I'm checking calendars and race schedules as we speak. It is amazing how fast my weekend plans just changed ;-(

Sorry I won't get to meet you two, but I definitely understand.  I'm canceling my hotel reservation today.  If the roads are too bad on Sunday to get there, so be it.

I think cancelling the swim was  a premature call.   2-5 inches is what they are calling for if the area were to get hit directly
