It occurs to me that doing an IM is a hell of a long time on the go and if I was even doing a training day that long I'd be stopping for meals and making sure I got in some protein.

Is protein important during a race this long? I know some dinks have it, but how else would you get some in (mmmm chocolate milk and a massage at each transition

Not necessary at all.

Some like to use a little because it helps make them feel more satiated versus just taking carbs all day.  Taking too much tends to cause GI issues for many.

Just make sure you train with it.  I have about 4g per serving mixed into my Infinit formula.  At IMKY I had very little solid food during the day ... an oatmeal cream pie, two halves of a powerbar ... and that might have been it.  Be a little wary about it though, while my GI was fine, if you rely too much on liquids for nutrition and then you cant take it for some reason, you have a big problem.  I got flavor fatigue and had to switch to water and gatorade every few stops just to mix it up.  Just be sure your body can handle a wide variety of liquids and foods in case you have one of those days where you have to make it up as you go along.  Im lucky because I can pretty much eat or drink anything during a race so I have alot of options if one part isnt working.  So while adding protein might help satiate you somewhat, dont be wary about adding some solid food just to add variety and give you something to do.

hammer perpetuem has protein in it. after a disasterous nutrition plan for IM last year (all carbs), I made the switch to perp and my nutrition/energy levels were PERFECT for this year's IM. kept the blood sugar level low and in "fat burning mode" until the last 2 hours of the day. then the sugar and caffeine had a beautiful effect just when i needed it most.

My INFINIT Iron Distance formula has protien in it.  It helps take the edge off the hunger issue.  My sprint distance formula has NO protien.  I go from the iron distance formula on the bike, to the sprint distance formula on the run.

not necessary but if you don't get protein during an IM you'll feel hungry most likely and also there are studies that show increased muscle cannibalization w/o protein since the body needs it in efforts typically > 2hrs.

I have found on my longer training rides, if I take in protien via a drink like accelerade, I have some GI issues right after I'm done, which could really be a problem if I had a long run next.

I have found sticking to just carbs with GE or some other drink, that DO feel hungry, but without any issues.  I have taken in a harvest bars on occasion with no ill effect.

But I'm still experimenting during my training for my first IM.

I have a friend that did IMCdA and stopped on each loop at Subway for a 6" turkey sandwich

I like others have an Infinit mix with protein for the bike, not really necessary but helps satiate a little.  Does make you fart though.  For the run I have no protein because it seems easier to digest once the HR starts rising on the run

Protein makes me burp and feel sick...I just suck up the hunger feeling and get used to it.  Infinit is supposed to be designed so it's the only thing you need..I also supplement with GU, because they are like crack for me.  Studies are inconclusive about the need for protein...do what works for you after practicing a lot in various conditions.

I used Perpeteum for IM FL.  I had no issues with it during training.  However, on race day I had reflux and burping issues on the run.  My stomach didn't feel so great the first few miles of the run.  I solved the problem by drinking mostly water for the first few miles of the run and that seemed to solve the problem and I felt great after that!

It wasn't so much the satisfy hunger angle I was thinking of (although that's a good point and a peanut butter sammie is a great idea). It was around muscle recovery. Is that why there's protein in some drinks or another reason?

I'm a perpetuem user too.  I use it on any ride over three hours because it is the only thing I found that makes me feel full and it seems to keep my energy up more than just carbs.  Unfortunately, it tastes like 1 cup cheerios+1 cup milk+1 cup OJ, stuck in a blender.  Ugh.

I would say, go for BCAA and not for proteins (eventually). You need some time to assimilate proteins while BCAA are very fast and will be used for sure by your body.

Try to train with BCAA, before starting, in the middle of the cycling and after training/racing.

No problem at all with digestion.

That's why it's in "recovery" drinks.  Good for post-race, not during race.  There's no need for protein from a performance standpoint.  But some people find that some protein (can still come in liquid form) makes them more "satisfied", which can be helpful over a long IM day.  Personally, I'm fine without it and stick with sugars (carbs) all day.
