Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: IMKY 2009 sold out already Just kidding. But, if you were on the fence and read the title of this thread with great disappoinment, they maybe you should go ahead and lay your money down and secure a spot before that is posted in ernest. I know this was a dirty trick but we had such a terrific time this year in Louisville with all the BTers and I hope we have as many or more BTers show up next year too. Here is a little information that might help you decide - one way or the other. Others who've done the course can add their assessment of the course too. Resons to do IMKY: 1. The swim is great - no sharks, no waves, no salt, a nice current, TT start so you don't get kicked in the head, no wetsuit needed......just a nice, enjoyable warm-up for a long day. 2. The first 10 miles of the bike and the last 20 miles are pancake-flat and/or downhill. The bike course is very well supported but I'm guessing this is true of all M-dot races. There are a lot of rolling hills that tend to come in waves like bad news...often times your legs are still flushing the lactic acid from the previous hill when the next one rolls around. Nevertheless, the hills are not that long or steep and you can spin up all of them....with maybe the exception of two hills. 3. The bike course is very pretty with green pastures and horses. 4. You KNOW you can get a slot in this race. M-dot races are getting harder and harder to get into and if you bank on FL, AZ or WI, you might get shut out and then are left without an Mdot IM event for next season. 5. I've not heard many negative comments from other BTes who've done this race about the course. Well, Cubefarmgopher said the food on the run tables sucked but some people would complain if you hung them with a new rope! :-) 6. We had well over 50 BTers do IMKY this year and just had a terrific time! It was so cool to pass (or in my case, be passed) by BTers on the course and high-five them and exchange words of encourgement. Not to mention the fun we had the long training months before the race excanging inspirational comments in each other's blogs. Well that was my bestest you-should-do-IMKY-next-year speech. Sorry again if your heart sank when you read the title of this thread. ~Mike

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: IMKY 2009 sold out already My butt is really starting to hurt from sitting the the fence for so long. Watching Moo today and debating what to do I think tonight I will chat with the wife and try to come up with a plan. So how does one have this chat with a 5 month pregnant wife and a two year old running around. "So babe, I know I am going to Tempe in 11 weeks for IM but I need to make a descion for next year NOW. Where would you like to go next year and spend a day catering to a 3 yr old and infant?" |

Where would you like to go next year and spend a day catering to a 3 yr old and infant?" lol.. I feel for you. I had this discussion a year ago. My wife was pregnant and I had a young daughter running around the house. For the majority of the time I tried to get workouts in at lunch, before everyone got up, and / or after everyone went to bed. It was hard at times and didn't get much sleep most of the time. A major downside was a decision that we made early on. They would not be there to watch my first IM. Yah.. that sucked, but there is no way I wanted her running around in Louisville, in the heat / humidity, all day with a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old. It would have been too hard on all involved. My kids are a handful in a "normal" situation.. haha Good luck with your conversation... See you in Kentucky next year. Kenny |

Expert 762 Missouri | Subject: RE: IMKY 2009 sold out already NOt sure on the number signed up yet, but here is my guess on why it is not sold out yet. People are waiting for Ironman Wisconsin to see if they can get into that, if they are not able to sign up online or when it sells out in 10 minutes, then I bet people come over to IM Kentucky and sign up and it will fill up pretty quick after that. Honestly, I am not sure why it has not filled up yet. Even IM CDA filled up in 5 days and although I have done that race twice and it is an awesome race and venue, it does require long rides in 30 degree weather and runs on snow/ice in getting ready for it in Jan/Feb. Where IM Kentucky is an end of the summer race, so more training can be done in warmer weather. Maybe it is the heat and humidity that keeps people from signing up. ???? |

If I had to choose between CDA and KY, I'd definitely pick CDA. Where I live, training in winter isn't bad, and I've been to KY during the summer and don't know how much I would enjoy racing in that humidity. I guess it would be ok if you're used to it, but I have been spoiled by a lifetime of mild weather here in CA. |
