Run
Comments: I knew today was going to be a struggle, so I just wanted to take it easy and use this as a warmup. I also decided I didn't want Kristen (enders_shadow) to lap me. Not much to say on this. It was pretty easy. Kristen didn't pass me, but I was one of the last runners. Transition 1
Comments: Untied my running shoes, got on bike shoes, ran up the hill to the dismount line. Running up the hill in wet grass in bike cleats was not a great experience. Bike
Comments: My goal for the bike was under 1:40. I'd done this course a few weeks earlier and knew it was pretty easy, so I pushed it pretty hard. I tried to stay between 16 and 18 mph for the whole first half. There weren't many people going in my direction, but I didn't see anyone in the other direction until I had finished 5 miles of the course, so that was pretty good. There's a kind of scary drawbridge at mile 8 of the course. You have to go over some metal grates, so that really slows you down. Also had a dead bird in my path the first time over. YUCK! On the section of route 5 after the bridge, there were a ton of people. Since it's a pretty flat course, everyone was getting bunched up. This is a problem on a two lane round, especially when there weren't many marshalls on the course (I saw 2 the whole time on the bike). At one point, I had cars coming towards me in my lane because they were trying to get around bikers. The first time, the bikers figured it out and got out of the way so the car could get over. About a mile later, it happened again!! This time there was a pack of five and a woman riding on the outside of two other riders (effectively three across) who would not get over for anything. People were yelling at her. The car had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting me and them. How there was not an accident, I do not know. After that, my heart was racing pretty bad. Not a surprise. I was almost to the turn off, though, so I knew I'd have a chance to relax. Saw my friend Anna (who, incidentally, was quite hung over) and looked great. I yelled for her. Around mile 10.5, I saw Kristen in the opposite direction. I thought there might be a chance of passing her, but it would be pretty hard. Not too far from the turn around, I saw Judi, so I told her she had to hurry or I would pass her. ;) Mananged to turn around pretty easily and then hammered on the downhill section. I had to yell at someone to stop riding in the middle so that I could pass. I hate when people block. Kept trying to ride as hard as I could. I had finished most of the first bottle I had at this point and went to the second one. EWWW! Still tasted like dish soap to the point where there was no chance to drink it. I was a little concerned because I still had about 10 miles to go and basically nothing to drink anymore. Oh well. When I was almost to the bridge, I could tell the rider that was in front of me for awhile was Judi. I was close enough to start thinking about passing and we were coming up to a downhill, so I picked up the pace. She didn't seem to appreciate me passing her at 22 mph. My goal from there was to finish in around 1:30 and not be passed by anyone. I did manage to make both of those goals. I passed 7 people total and never had anyone pass me back. :) What would you do differently?: Not have a water bottle full of soap. Transition 2
Comments: Took longer than my normal T2 because the dumb girl next to me with her giant hybrid and tractor seat decided to rack her bike the opposite way than she had in the morning. Which meant she was now in my space all over my stuff. What gives!! I had to move her bike out of the way so that I could get mine on the race. I was pretty pissed off. Stopped using Yankz when I got the new shoes and it works better for running, so I had to tie the shoes. Worth the extra time here. Run
Comments: I knew this run was not going to be fun. I don't do very well running in tris. Not really sure why. This one wasn't much of an exception. The roads on Colonial Parkway are so rough and my feet were killing me. I would not want to do this half. You run this course plus a bit more. Ugh. After heading out of transition, Judi passed me pretty much right away. I knew that was going to happen. My goal was to just not be last. I tried to run as much as I could for the first mile, but my lungs were not cooperating with me. If I ran too hard, they would get clogged up and I'd have to walk to let them clear out and I'd stop wheezing. I ran most of miles 2 - 3. At the second water stop, one of the volunteers asked if I wanted Gatorade. Yeah, I wanted Gatorade, but this was Heed. I stopped to tell him that he needed to tell runners it was Heed because it tastes way different than Gatorade. I hate when they do that. Made it to the turn around, which was just a sign in the road. I went around the sign (that's what we told people during the 3Sports du earlier in the year). The woman behind me joked that I was cheating. I told her she could cheat too. :) Got some water and had a Clif shot block. Kept trudging along. I got passed by the woman behind me (same one as before) and I told her she couldn't pass because there were signs on the road that said so. She said she wouldn't tell anyone if I passed her later. ;) I walked a lot between mile 4 and 5 because there was more shade here than any other place on the course. Ran most of the rest of the race. I was so happy to be finished! I had a lot of friends waiting for me - Erin and Andy ran to the edge of the finish chute to yell really loud. So nice to have a lot of people waiting even though I was one of the last people. :) What would you do differently?: Not be sick? Who knows. I suck at running. I just need to do it a lot more and get better at it. Post race
Warm down: Went to the bathroom, then got some water and hung out at the RTC tent. Drank a lot of water and gatorade, talked to Judi and some of my RTC friends. Watched a friend get 1st in the Athena division. :) Packed up and went home. Took a nap in the car on the way home What limited your ability to perform faster: Being sick. I wasn't so excited about this race since it got turned into a duathlon and I got hit with a cold pretty hard on Saturday. I decided to go anyway since it was this or a long run.
My goals were to
1) finish
2) have a good bike (under 1:40)
3) not be last
Drove down to Williamsburg with Andy that morning. I drove there so that he could sleep and then he'd drive home and I could sleep. It was an interesting drive. We left at 6:00. Got near the race way and there was a stray dog crossing the interstate. Joy. Later there was a semi jackknifed across the road and traffic was completely stopped so they could get it off. Something else happened but I can't remember now. Needless to say, I was thrilled to finally get there. A little stressed out, but mostly ok.
Got my packet, went in to transition and got set up. I really didn't have much in there. I took a spot near where racks joined together, so I hung my bag on the bar. Had bike shoes on the ground, helmet on the bike with sunglasses and gloves in it. Running shoes and race belt on me. In retrospect, I should have put down a towel or something to keep the annoying girl next to me out of my space.
Walked around and chatted with people. It was a little strange because the sprint started an hour before the Oly, so there was some confusion as to what was going on. I felt bad for the sprint people trying to race and having Oly people getting there late get in their way.
Took some cold medicine about a half an hour before the race started.
