I´ve decided to celebrate my half century by doing a half ironman.
So I´m looking for recomendations for good races, and I´m willing to consider travelling anywhere in the world to take part.
I must add that I still have a couple of years to go, so which races do you suggest I should look at for 2010?

Thanks!

A friend and I are planning on The Big Kahuna HIM in Santa Cruz, CA for our first one. It's supposed to be a good choice for a first. It's the first weekend of Sept every year, so you have all spring and summer to prepare. It's not an M-dot race though, if that matters.

where do you live? I have several on my to do list...

 Vineman 70.3

Miamiman

Longhorn 70.3

and Timberman 70.3

You can do a google search of half ironman distance races and get a world wide calendar.

Kinetic, open the season in cold water
Mooseman, the one I've wanted to do since I knew what a Tri was.
Timberman, What the heck, do an M-dot 70.3 race

Boise HIM is very nice. Beautiful scenery starting up in the mountains at Lucky Peak dam, biking down and finishing in downtown Boise, then running along the Boise river and finishing downtown.

I have yet to do it, but will be signing up for Augusta 70.3.  Augusta is a beautiful area.  Actually the bike takes you from Augusta, GA and through Aiken, SC, then back.  It is a neat area.  It is an innaugural event, so there is not alot of info it yet.

My first ever tri was the Vineman 70.3. Wetsuit legal river swim and a great bike course.

I originally picked that one because my mother in law was supposed to join me and she is a prior Olympic marathon runner but is a total fish out of water, in the water.

Since the swim is usually the roughest part for most folks, it's hard to beat a 8minute separation on waves and a freshwater river swim.

I'll do it and Wildflower Long Course this year as my HIM's.

dont mean to hijack but,

ZekeB is the Vineman an M-Dot race?   I was seriously thinking about doing it as my first HIM in 09 but if its not a true "Ironman" event... idk.

Says Ironman on my race shirts, but don't really know the difference. It's not Ironman till it's 2.4/112/26.2.

I had a blast, but will probably do AZ as my full distance in 2010, after two trips on the Vineman 70.3 course I will be ready to try different stuff.

Silverman, here in Las Vegas is a TOUGH but wonderful race.  AND it's a great destination race if you want to travel!  Probably won't be too hard to get people to join you to cheer you on!
