I have been looking into some trail runs for the Winter season, but I'm also doing the Atlanta Half Mary on Thanksgiving, which I heard is a really fun race.  Here is a link I have been going to for a long time.  They have the most comprehensive race schedule I have seen.  http://www.rungeorgia.com/calendar.html

The brasstown Bald Buster 5k is prob. my favorite winter run.   the course is amazingly difficult and there will be no PR's set, but getting a shirt that says "baldbuster" and being allowed to run it is great.

My favorite race is the Hogpen Hill Climb in Helen, GA. Last year it snowed and they closed the top of the mountain so we had to turn around and race back down. I look forward to this race every year!

Another good one is Run the Regan half marathon in Snellville, GA. It's usually freezing cold but a pretty fast course. There are definitely some hills but that means some good downhills too.

ha ha ha

What is the date on "Run the Regan half marathon"?

I am doing the 10th Annual Williams Run/Walk this Saturday 10K. The course should be very fast!

Other than that, I am looking into the Thanksgiving Day Half. Why not start off with some exercise, followed by gorging myself on some great food?

I second the Hog Pen hill climb. That is a must do race. It went all the way to the top in 2007, and half way up in 2008 due to snow. Since Precipitation is rare in this state, I would bet on going all the way to the top. Basically, you are running up Hog Pen gap, from helen. It's a tough run, but like I said earlier, a must do. Distance is somewhere around 11 miles. I forget actual. Total climbing is around 3000 feet. This race takes place on or near the 18/19 th of January.

Run the Regan is an excellent event. A big festival type atmosphere. That one is on Feb 14th.

Then there is what I call, '10k race season' from Early Feb to Early March. All peachtree qualifiers. In order, they are:

1. Chattahoochee Challenge 10k, at the Nature Center. (East Cobb / Roswell)
2. Charles Harris 10k (Tucker)
3. Chattahoochee Road Race (Sandy Springs)
4. Silver Comet 10k. (Mabelton)

All fast 10k's designed to get folks their Peachtree qualifying time.

All those races fall in the Winter.. there is great running around here in that season.

X3 on Hogpen, great challenge to kick the year off and good incentive to get some hill work in.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate this year.

Here is what I am looking at for this winter somewhat near ATL:

Nov. 8 - Battlefield 1/2 Marathon - Chickamauga, GA

Dec. 13 - Carpet Capital 10 Miler - Dalton, GA

Jan. 17 or TBA - Hogpen Hill Climb - Helen, GA

Feb. 8 - Redtop Rumble 11.5 Trail Run - Cartersville, GA

Mar. 7 - Scenic City 1/2 Marathon - Chattanooga, TN - good ING warmup

To the OP, there is also a fast half/full marathon in late January down the road from you at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain.

The Red Top rumble is looking like a good option to me. I would love to run a good trail run race. Problem is, it might be the same date as competing events. 1) Tundra Time Trial. and 2) Run the Reagan.

Red Top: Sunday, Feb 8th.
Found Run the Reagan. It's on Sat Feb 14th. Valentines day.

I'd love to do RnR but that's too many 1/2 marys for me (Atlanta 1/2, Callaway Gardens 1/2 and ING 1/2). I'm already signed up for Red Top and I'm hoping TTT is not that same weekend.

Then I guess you're not interested in the Mystery Mountain Marathon & 12 Mile trail race this weekend on Fort Mountain.

I’m running the trail run at Big Creek but haven’t decided on which distance yet. I’m planning for the Thrill in The Hills trail ½ mary at Ft Yargo in late Feb also.

The Hogpen and Brasstown hill runs look interesting, these will be a maybe for me now.

I'm signed up (just did it) for the Georgia Battle at Big Creek (7 mi) on the 8th on Nov and am also signed up for the Red Top Rumble (11 mi).

You guys (and gals) keep an eye on Doug (aka mr_brown_dog) and his 22 mile daily runs. He's goign to be at the red top rumble. You may just see a blur running past you...

Funny.  There are plenty of kids faster than me!  I don't even hold the house speed record for the brown_dog's.  That's what I get for marrying a gazelle.

btw, a year ago today I set a new distance record for myself.  A whopping 8 miles!
