Subject: Train for OLY even tho your gonna SPRINT
Ok so here is my personal dilemma.
I am starting to book the races for my first triathlon season starting with the Wildman in March 09.
The question I have is for training purposes, can I train like im training for an OLY,when next season im 99% sure all 4-5 of my races will be sprints?
Im competitive, and wanted to get my feet wet with the Wildman before advancing on to others, and for myself, it's important for me not only to finsih but to place relatively well.
Obviousley i know this comes with practice and time. I am also aware the plans on BT.com and the time guidlines are usually "back of the pack" times, so should i just increase all the times on the training plan or should i train using a 16 week OLY plan?
Im already relatively fit. i can run about 2 miles at an 8:55 mile without stopping, can ride 13 miles on a trainer in roughly 30 minutes, but my swimming blows-i enrolled in a masters class to help with that as well.
Any advice?
Thanks!

When I was getting started I usually trained for well over the next target race distances. If you're planning to really race the sprint tris then that would be a good starting point but to do your best you would also want to work on going faster than you could sustain for an oly. Get some solid base before you push for speed though.

There is a couple ways to look at it...

I became faster at Oly's when I was training for HIM's and IM's.  That may just be the fact I was developing a better base.  I really thing the over distance training helps.

HOWEVER, shorter distance plans may focus more on speedwork later in the plan AND more brick/transition work that the longer plans don't have.

Both methods have their upsides.

For me?  I know my base can always use improving, and I would rather spend more time working on that, than doing less time doing speedwork.  Speedwork hurts me a lot more than base training.

That is how I train. When I was doing sprints, I was training for Oly's. To race Oly's, I trained for HIM. For my HIM, somewhere between HIM & IM.

The more base you have the faster you will become on shorter stuff as a by product. Of course, speed work in the early season will also help build speed.

Over training the distance is always the best idea IMO.

Short answer is yes. This past year I ran all sprints but followed a Oly training plan. I used a lot of speedwork, especially early in the year. I think it really paid off, in particular by the end of the season. Next year I plan to add some Oly races to the schedule & just as Coldfire posted, I am planning on doing HIM training. Since I prefer speed over distance as my preference, I do plan to do lots of speed work as part of the plan. So I guess it will end up a little bit of a hybrid plan.

I can't advocate doing speedwork early in the season.  It's not a good idea IMO and could be a fast ticket to injury and a ruined season.

Your body is not ready for it.  Early season is for base training.  Once a solid base is establish, introducing speedwork is a good idea.  I would say maybe the last half of a plan, with the first half almost entirely dedicated to base training.

A nice hybrid could be OLY training for the base portion to get some over distances in, then do some really specific sprint training workouts in the last 1/3 of the plan.

Over distance training really helps with the mind too.  During HIM training, I was doing 3-4 hour long rides.  Once you get mentally used to that, the 1:15 for a Oly seems short, even if you are going harder.

That's my M.O. I spent the winter ramping up for a season of Oly's, but fell in love with the red-line aspect of Sprints. As the races got shorter through the season, my splits got faster. Train long, race short. I do wish I had started some speed work a bit earlier than Spring, however. If you have a good base, it's not going to hurt.

Thanks everyone!

Thats what i had figured, as far as training one step up. All the good advice helps me tremendously so i really appreciate it.

I wanted to get people's opinion on a solid "no-fail" OLY training plan approx 16-18 weeks in length as the wildman is around 18 weeks away.

The 16 week OLY on here looks pretty good( the free one) although i had looked at becoming a bronze member soon, so im not sure if there are "better" one's on there.

Also a few books i grabbed from the library had OLY plans in them as well a few 12 weekers, one 16 week.

anyone have any they particulary enjoyed? I am looking at two-daying 5-6 days a week with at least one day of rest, and lifting 3 days a week.
So preferably an oly plan that has two a days.

Thanks !

I did the bronze 20-week Oly plan last year, thinking I was going to actually do an Oly.  Wound up doing 3 sprints (among other things) and did well in them.

I'm considering Silver for next year as there is an Intermediate Sprint plan avalible in Silver.

I'm not sure what other people thing about it, but I LOVE this book.  Even if it's just to get ideas and look at plans.  I used several different plans from this book with good results.  They have 8-12 different plans for each race distance (sprint - IM) for different ability levels.  Granted, they plans are similar, so see a couple, you can see the pattern they used to get the rest.  But I still really like it.  Plus for 20 bucks?  Can't beat it...

I ended up using a plan on BT for my IM plan, because I liked it, AND it loads into you logs really well.

I would have to say the Silver plans are better IMO.  They offer more detail and can be Heart Rate based, RPE based.  The bronze are not bad, but I find that I only consider the Silver plans when I'm selecting.  Not cuz they are "silver" but they seem to fit me better.

I'm currently deciding if I want to do the 21 week OLY plan to prep me for my HIM in the spring or do an HIM plan (yes, contrary to the OP).  I saw that the long bikes and runs (the most important for long distance racing) are the same between the two plans.

That's something you need to consider.  An advanced Oly plan could be more hours and more intense than a beginner HIM plan.  So training with a plan for a "longer" race does not mean everything.
