Well, one of my friends decided last week she wants to do a 1/2 Triathlon in August. Foolishly, I agreed to train with her. I went looking for a plan, came across this site and here I am.:-O I have no background in anything except sitting on the couch thinking it would be a great idea to go do something, but I'm excited to try.

Well you've taken the first steps, by agreeing to train, so you're already 1 step ahead of the couch sitters! Any time you need motivation, just ask...sounds to me though like you got the right attitude and that's the best thing to have! Let us know how things go.

Welcome to the board -- glad you found us -- and you will be too.

Ummm -- yeah, 1/2 Ironman is a biggie. You might want to learn about the other options -- like the Sprint distance Tri, or the Olympic distance (which I think is shorter than the 1/2 also) for your first try at a tri.

Have fun.

I know I might not be able to get there by August, but at least I'll be 6 months of training closer to it than I am now.

Hi, and welcome to the board. I applaud your determination to go from the couch to a 1/2 Iron Man triathlon. You have 6 months to prepare and in my very humble opinion, you can very well do it. Start by being truthfull to yourself in assessing your fitness level. Ask you physician for a complete physical to ensure that you won't run into any problems. Next, if you get the go-ahead from your doctor, find a good training schedule ... like the one for the 1/2 IM at the home page: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Scott%20Herrick/halfim/preparing_...

Ask as many questions as possible; no question is too trivial or too "dumb". Remember that we are also beginners! For swimming, if you do not know the proper techniques, find a coach or a swim team member who can show you the basics. For cycling, learn to spin and how to use your gears effectively. And for the running, get a good pair of running shoes.

I'm assuming it's the Coeur d'Alene Tri, but I don't know for sure. I didn't want too many details. It sounds dumb, but the less I know about the actual event, the better. At least for now.
